If you truly want some help figuring out how to use Map Finder, I would be happy to help. I must warn you though, it requires a separate download/install for the Rule Builder and Report Viewer utilities. ;) You can look >>here<<, if you are interested. There is a better version, currently a Beta version, that you can >>download<<, if you are feeling adventuresome.

I will, however, pass. I really am a PC philistine and likely it would only cause me headaches and I would have to waste your valuable time going back and forth having my hand held. :crazyeye:

Plus, I do not mind hitting regen once or twice or even playing the more challenging maps. :goodjob:
 
I've noticed that if i generate a map while HOF mod is loaded, and quit that game and start a new game it will always crash (scripts error IIRC). I dont want to reproduce the error though (since id rather be playing), but i can work around it. Just a heads up in case someone else is having problems like this and can be bothered to recreate the error.

The #1 skill for HOF games is picking Marathon speed. The #2 skill is having enough time to play at that speed.

Look at the results of GMinor 4 for proof.
 
Picking Marathon speed doesn't help if you're going for #1 in a non-Marathon table though :mischief:.

There are separate tables for each game speed, so it won't matter if someone is skilled enough to submit a marathon time game, only if they're skilled enough to submit a better quick time game.

I'm having trouble with MapBuilder. I've checked all the installations - OK. I checked the options and directory settings - OK. When I start MapBuilder with alt-M, I see it start and a save is made, a regeneration occurs, then nothing. I can play the regenerated map. MapBuilder doesn't kick in and generate the next map. I checked the saves directory. Nothing saved. I changed the delay to 10. No better. The only thing I can think of is directory names. I have everything on the D: drive. Did someone hardcode a C: or something into the program? Is it ignoring the directory option? I'm puzzled. I'll keep playing, but maybe someone has the answer.
 
OK. Found it. Murphy's Law: Ask for help and find the answer just afterwards; Don't ask for help and never get an answer.

In the rules builder, you must have more than one OR clause. One OR clause and it hangs when you use that rule set in MapBuilder in the HOV mod. A bug, I guess.

Nope. I don't think that was it. I can't reproduce it. Do you still have the rule file?

More than likely, it stoped because there were two civs in contact. It displays a message when that happens.

Yes!

It wasn't the one OR clause after all. I've been starting MapFinder as Emperor, Mansa, Fractal, random climate and random sea level. Some times it just does nothing. Some times it runs for a while then stops. I haven't looked at the log. Any messages have scrolled off by the time I look at the screen. It does seem like it stops if I see another civ on the screen, but I can't be 100% sure of that. As I said, I haven't looked at the log.

When it does nothing, its MapFinder that is busy, hung or lost. I can make moves in the game, and alt-X stops MapFinder, but nothing is happening with MapFinder. I never see anything in the log on the screen.

Tonight, I'll try to be more methodical. Back to one OR clause with a couple of obvious AND subclauses: 0-1 dessert; 1-999 food resource; 1-999 commerce resource; 1-999 forest, etc. See if I get any hits. I've seen it run for a long time and get no hits. It ran for some time overnight and stopped after an unknown number of iterations with no hits. I need to start small.

Why does it stop when another civ is seen? Shouldn't it keep on truckin'?

Should I worry about the delay value? I don't have the fastest machine.

Are there traces or debug messages that can be turned on that would help?

There's a bug with Civ4's map regeneration where if you have contact before regenerating you still have contact after as well. This applies to the AIs as well as the human player. To avoid encountering this bug we have made the HOF mod not allow map regenerations if any player's have contact. This affects MapFinder as well.

That explains it.

Is there a log message when this occurs? I think I might have seen one.

Anyway, tonight I'll pay close attention to everything as I try to get MapFinder working for me.

Becareful of too many AND rules requiring one or more of something. The more of them you have the fewer maps you will get.

When you watch it, you should see a perceptable pause between the map centering and when the screen freezes for the next regen. If seems too short then increase the delay. That might have something to do with the mysterious stops.

yes. try these CivilizationIV.ini file settings:

Edit: Beware, turning on logging sometimes slow things down due to virusscan software.

Much better results with MapFinder. I found that you must exit CivIV for new rules to be correctly executed. I was running CivIV HOF mod, starting MapFinder alt-M, running for a while, stopping alt-X, switching to the rule editor, saving a new default.rul, switching back to CivIV, starting alt-M. The matches by MapFinder made no sense at all. I had a single rule: 2 gold. I got matches on almost every map. But, exit CivIV and get back in: all is OK. I still have problems with mystery hangs. I started with the default delay, then 5, then 8. The longest run is 120 regens before hanging. I'll set it to 10 tonight. When it hangs, I can play the game and such, and alt-X will stop it. It doesn't seem like the delay is too short. I see the map center and about 8 seconds later the screen freezes for the next regen. Except when it hangs, of course. Then, the next regen simply doesn't happen.

Anyway, I'm much happier and can get results. So far, only one hit on my very-good-start rule set, but I'll keep tuning it.
