HOF Mod to be made compulsory.

Maybe a silly question but I'm not sure how to review the autologger. I find some "log files" (using Windows Explorer) but they don't include any info about my game.

To review the log do you have to launch the game and review from within the game?

There should be an Autolog folder in your My Documents\.... \Civ4\ folder. It's in there.

I downloaded the .007 (for Jar Jar's test map of GOTM 12) and the .008 version. Both now appear in the mods menu, I can load up both test maps (which I could not before the downloads).

BUT ... nothing looks different on the interface, or when I go to the various advisors. Are all of the features activated by hotkeys, rather than interface buttons or other mouse-able controls?

If the interface should look different, could someone post a screenshot of that?

I'm confused ...

There are screen shots of the mod config tabs here in this very thread.

Use the Options HOF tabs to configure the extras, as it loads up initially with everything disabled.

I think this is the third time in the last 24 hours that I've answered this question :p

There is also a readme installed with the mod.

@AlanH thanks for the prompt reply

Opps! I did not read the whole thread before posting the question, so I'll take the hit for that one. An RTFT to me !

However ...

Since the post before mine in this thread is yours from 10/28, safe to say that the two previous answers in 24h were not in this thread, so :p back at you :mischief:

Seriously ...

I did find the readme after some hunting. Didn't realize how much stuff is stored in that civ 4 folder (such as every screenshot I have ever takes of any game). I see there that there is an HOF support thread in the HOF forum.

Let me suggest that you put a sticky in the GOTM forum titles "HOF mod users guide and FAQ" where these basic questions can be answered once, or that refers us to the HOF forum, and where the newbies like me who may only be reading the GOTM forum can find it easily. I suspect that after the saves are released for GOTM 12, these questions will be coming even more often if you don't have such a clearly marked info thread.

Maybe this will save you some work ... :)

Correct. I'm simply pointing out that you are not the only player around here who hasn't found the readme, or any of the other information posted about the mod, including its home page.

There have been several posts pointing GOTM players to the HOF site, and every post by Denniz has the links in his sig. However, I've edited another link into ainwood's first post in this thread.

OK, sorry to sound stupid but clicking the link to download the HOF mod on your first post AlanH (EDIT: Sorry, I meant Ainwood) brings up the Warlords and Vanilla download links and instructions. Is the Vanilla download Version 1.61.008 the HOF mod we require for GOTMs, SGOTM and the Warlords download for WGOTM?

I was looking for a HOF Version 1.61.008 download link as I thought Vanilla was something else?

The struggle to achieve clarity continues ...

The link contains a section with the heading

"Civ4 Vanilla - Release Notes
Upgrade from V1.61.007 to V1.61.008"

When I first looked at it I thought it might be refering to some new vanilla patch, as the heading does not say "HOF mod v1.61.008".

Perfectly clear to the initiated, but somewhat ambiguous to the uninitiated.

Perhaps some tweaking of the language on that link (adding "HOF mod" to the version numbers) will help.

Click on the "here" in this part of the link will get you the HOF mod version 1.61.008

"Civ4 Vanilla - Download
Version 1.61.008 can be downloaded from >> here << (1.25Mb). "

Yes. Vanilla is the generally accepted term used to define the original version of Civ4, as played in GOTM. What would you prefer to call it?

Warlords is ... Warlords, as played in WOTM.

SGOTM dioesn't use the HoF Mod as yet.

@d-V: The page I linked when I edited Ainwood's first post is the general page on the HoF site describing all things to do with the Mod. If and when it is updated the links on that page will point to the latest versions of the vanilla and Warlords mods. I think it would be dangerous to create separate links to specific mod versions here, as they will expire when the mod is updated.

The individual game release pages point to the specific version of the mod that is required to play them.

Original.

Makes more sense and does not rely on a questionable analogy.

How do you suggest we persuade the rest of the site to change terminology?

Just start using it in an "official" capacity. Control of language works. If it did not, then the site would not seek to do it with other words! (some of which are clearly undesirable on this site)

If the site (mods, banners, and headers) were to consistantly refer to the original version of Civ IV as Original Civ IV, it will catch on very quickly, and that is what it would be called.

Because really, the analogy is wholly incorrect. Vanilla is an added flavor, and a strong one, too.

Original is equally ambiguous, as it could mean version 1.00 of Civ4 or version 2.00 of Warlords. Sorry, I don't feel strongly enough about it to try to fight City Hall on your behalf.

I will carry on the crusade single-handedly, then. ;)

I was not suggesting a link to every iteration of the mod (I agree that could be even more confusing). My point was that to refer to vanilla civ v1.61.008 (not including "HOF mod" in the designation) may not clearly indicate a mod to a newcomer. I am assuming that in v1.xx.yyy, the xx is a patch number and the yyy is a mod number. If you know that, then v1.61.008 is clearly a mod. But if you don't know that, well ... confusion.

So "vanilla civ HOF mod v1.61.008" would be less confusing (in my opinion) than the current "vanilla civ v1.61.008", at least to newcomers.

The simplest way to get the mod turns out to be the link on the first post of the GOTM 12 pregame thread: that link takes you right to the dialogue box for the install.

Civ4ScreenShot0000.JPG

whats up with the red text?

The clue is in the first line of text:

This game is not valid for HOF use ....
The HOF Mod is built and maintained by the Hall of Fame team. They have a set of rules that saves have to obey in order to be eligible as submissions for the Hall of Fame. The warnings you see are not relevant for the Game of the Month. If they upset you, then you can turn them off by going to Options/HOF3 and unchecking two checkboxes called: "Startup HOF Settings" and "Victory Screen HOF Settings".

Thats all i needed to know i guess.

And no, they don't upset me. I just wanted to know if that was normal or not.

I am all with you on this one. For non native English speakers, "Vanilla" is a mystifying word. It took me months to understand what it meant.

I think both 'Vanilla' and 'Original' share the same level of ambiguity about patches.
