HOF Questions and Answers Thread

sorry, what I meant is I never saw it on the front page

Greetings,
I'm looking to install the HOF mod so I can participate in the Civ IV GOTM games. I've installed the HOF mod but get an error message when I run it. The error is:

The HOF Mod will be unable to save settings. Games played will NOT be valid for submission...

I've searched the forums a bit and tried a couple things. I looked at the windows 7 page and changed the folder permissions and security as directed. I also opened Civ BtS and checked for updates and downloaded a very large update. I was then given the option to click okay to exit the game so it would install the update. I did that and nothing else happened so I assume that update was installed.

After those attempts I also downloaded the Civ4 Bts DLLs and replaced the one in the main Assets folder and the Warlords Assets folder just for good measure. However I still have the same problem.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

Welcome to the HOF!

I don't think the patch installs automatically. You can find it in your "Documents\My Games\beyond the sword\Patch" folder. You should patch Vanilla (1.74) and Warlords (2.13) ffirst before installing the BTS patch. (The downloaded files for them are for those that don't own BTS.) You can download all the patches from CFC Downloads.

There is a AssetChecker you can run to verify your install.

Good Luck.

Thanks Denniz,
I did find the patch folder you mentioned and have installed the patch. It seemed slightly odd but I assumed it had installed as it went. I've installed that now and restarted the computer, still the same problem.
I downloaded and ran the asset checker. It basically detected 2 errors.
1. Warloards does not have a HOF 2.13.004 mod.
2. BTS doesn't have the Buffy mod.

Was I supposed to install these? I only downloaded and installed the one HOF mod which went exactly as described on the GOTM instructions screen. I'm guessing these other mods are in fact necessary so I'll download and install them. They weren't listed in the GOTM instructions nor on the link I followed to install the HOF mod.

If it sounds like I've missed something else anyone is free to comment. I'll post back when I have success. =)

Well lots of activity but no success.

1. installed BTS patch (vanilla and warlords are current)
2. installed Warlords HOF mod
3. installed Buffy mod
4. run the asset checker - no errors
4. again did the windows 7 fixes to the firaxis folder properties/security

Still receiving the same error when I try to load the game with the HOF mod. What am I missing?

Success!
To document that final step for others, I right clicked the civilization4.exe file and selected properties. The Run as Administrator option is on the Compatibility tab and selecting that option was the final step.

Three cheers for Denniz!

Hi guys, I have a question (probably a very dumb one, I'm sorry, but I'm new to the HoF challenges).

What makes the BUFFY mod the only available mod to submit games?

I know BUFFY contains the BUG mod and other mods, but what I mean is what makes BUFFY the only "competition" mod. It prevents cheating? It prevents reloading a previous save? What exactly?

Thanks in advance.

We don't allow other mods because don't want code that alters game play used for the HOF.

BUFFY (and the Vanilla and Warlords HOF Mods) has a number of messages and warnings built in to the help players avoid playing games that aren't in compliance the HOF rules. Noboday likes to waste a couple hours on a game that can't be accepted.

There are other features that aid the HOF Staff in vetting games. We don't get into details about our capabilities there.

Oh, ok, thanks.

So the mod doesn't prevents the player from reloading a previous save, right? I found that strange, because, at least IMO, reloading a save after screwing something is a little unfair.

Just asking, as I want to participate in Challenge 7 ;)

Thanks.

No, it doesn't prevent you or even warn you about reloading a previous save. However, it can detect it and your game will be rejected due violating the replaying rule.

Exception: Crash Exception Policy: reloading the last save before a crash is allowed provided all instructions of the crash exception policy has been complied with to the letter. Even then there are no guarantees of "crashed" game acceptance.

We agree with your assessment. ;)

As Sun Tzu Wu stated, reloading/replaying of turns is not allowed under the HOF rules. I didn't call that out as it is clearly stated in the HOF Rules. Everyone should familarize themselves with the rules before submitting.

We don't require that games be playing in a single session. Players can save and resume play later from that save. The key is pick up exactly where you left off. You can use an Civ5 Civ4 Autosaves for that but manually created saves are recommended. There are also a couple automatic save options included in the mods for the forgetful. (i.e. Save on Exit, 4000BC Save, etc.)

I understand now, thanks to both of you.

My fault, though: I read the rules before asking, but just the rules under the "Settings" tab. Just now I noticed the rest of the tabs. Silly me.

Dear moderators

I wonder if it would be possible for you to add a filter option to the Gauntlet-> List tab in the HoF.

I am asking this 'cause it would be easier to search for old gauntlet/challenge threads which are a great reference for some specific game options used in the current gauntlets/challenges and other stuff of general interest.

It's not that it's that hard to find the info in the way it works now, but with a Victory Condition/difficulty/speed/map size filter option or something similar, it would be even better.

That's the idea. I wouldn't want to seem too demanding :D. Thanks.

cheers
