How do Conservatives hold their views in a Liberal area?

How do you guys explain situations when a Republican got an office in a liberal area : NY City, California etc...
Haven't they moderated their speech to get elected ?
Do conservatives in Alabama and in NY City share the same opinion ?
Do they get to modify their politics in order to get to the office ?
Exactly the same questions apply to Dems in conservative areas (but unfortunatly the OT only mentioned the other way around).

It's an interesting question for us, particularily in non federal countries where parties have homogeneous approaches on each issues regardless tbe political geography of the country.

Ie : Socialist party is not less socialist in Bretagne than it is in Northern France despite the fact Bretagne is a bit right wing and Northern France left wing.

I am wondering how Conservatives stick on strongly to their views dispite being in a Liberal area, regardless if they post in CFC OT or talk to people face to face.

We use our special Brainwave machines.

I think its amusing that so many people like to put themselves in a box, anyway. I'm sure people have an opinion as to if I'm liberal/conservative/socialism/idiot, but I never think of myself in any of those terms.

Think for yourself, not about yourself.

you seem to take each view on a case by case basis, which i respect, even though it often has me arguing with you

Assuming you're talking to me.... :) Here's the thing. As soon as you self-identify, then you, like or not, become a stereotype OR will be stereotyped in all interactions.

Obviously, I have a PoV and could easily proclaim that I'm a liberal/conservative/christian/atheist/American/Eskimo/Hetero/Homo/Martian. But, as soon as I do that, it devalues everything I saw and I'm lumped into the "them" anytime someone says "those liberals blah blah blah" or "those conservative homo blah blah blah".

I'd rather treat people as individuals and be seen as such in return.

Granted, I will make generalizations about groups of people at times, but I hope when I do so its in an appropriate context (talking about voting patterns, immigration, etc...). But, unless a person self-identifies and makes it an unavoidable part of their argument, I'll (try to) avoid the labeling of individuals. Its a very poor form of discourse, IMHO.

Yes i was talking about you. And though i consider myself conservative, i break with other conservatives so often on certain topics (gay marriage, military spending,...) that some of my conservative friends consider me a raving liberal lunatic.

I think genetics play into it a bit. I'm part Polish. Poles are known to be stubborn. :)

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well theyd be singing so happily,
Joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the worlds asleep,
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man.
Wont you please, please tell me what weve learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or theyll be calling you a radical,
Liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Wont you sign up your name, wed like to feel youre
Acceptable, respecable, presentable, a vegtable!

At night, when all the worlds asleep,
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man.
Wont you please, please tell me what weve learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

I can't believe you're doing this, I am ashamed that you would say these things.

There's no such thing as a conservative party or a liberal party in America. The Republicans use what ever they need to win the election - the same as Democrats. The mayor of New York, Bloomberg, is a LIBERAL Republican, yes, and most consider him to be gay. Arnold headbuts with the Republicans on so many issues, for he has self characterized himself as a fiscal conservative but social liberal. I can't believe that you said this.

He's from France, for God's sake... no offense to him, but he can't be expected to know every little detail about American politics, no more than we should know every detail about French politics!

Sure there are articulate, informed, intelligent conservatives.

But around here, all they ever do is three things:

1.Shoot a gun.
2.Wave a flag.
3.Flip a bird.

Nuff said.

And all liberals do around here is:

1) Smoke some pot.
2) Go to some petty protest rally.
3) Call you a racist/bigot/insensitive.

In case you hadn't noticed, I (a conservative) take very strong offense at being called a gun-shooting, flag-waving, bird-flipping, uninformed HICK!!!!! So stop before I make you eat your words!

Dawgphood..... SHUT UP.... you seem to know less than nothing about anything, so keep your mouth shut and learn something. Domestically, the so-called liberals in this country couldn't manage its economy if that job consisted of jacking off all day. The conservatives, on the other hand, manage to boost the economy by 10% for every 4 year term they control it. As for foreign policy, neither party seems to have its head far enough out of its a** to see daylight, just like you.

Ahem, I hear the anti-flame hammer coming from over yonder.

I'm not a democrat either. I just have my own thoughts, and dispense them as I see fit.

You apparently, have somewhat proven my point, albeit on the internet.

Impressive.:goodjob:

Aww, couldn't you have thrown in some Michael Moore?

Its funny you assume i'm a liberal. I'm not, at least not nowadays.

But all regards aside, you need to make your witty repartee a bit more concise, like me!

Nice try Mr. Muscovite.

I wasn't talking about you.

And incase you didn't notice, I was just talking about the conservatives around here. I mentioned that there are quite a few intelligent, articulate, informed conservatives that I respect, even if I disagree.

Be cool hombre.
