How do you become a MOD?

So you respect Pellaken for wanting to be a mod? Some people like VC are unlikely to want the title of moderator but Pellaken was another person who just wanted the power. Now we all know that Floppa should be the next Mod.
Ah, my mistake; let me rephrase my post : -

Anybody wanting to be a mod has got to be out of their minds. :p I have only the greatest of respect for those who actually have to tread thru God-knows-how-many threads each day, searching for spam, against site rules material, etc. :goodjob:

And we all know about Pellaken, no words needed. :) Anybody seen him lately?

There are better options for a mod... (OMG when floppa's being selected to a mod, he bans me... ;))

Maybe. Who knows? He's talked so much about being one and banning everyone; it's hard to take him seriously. :)

Besides I think he posts fr work and has not the time.

Anyway, being a Mod doesn't look like hard work

 And the birds seem to fly so easily....

furthermore:
Yeah, I think a new batch of MODS is needed to shake the place up a bit, I mean I haven't seen anything of some mods for days.

Why would the place need shaking up? If you haven't seen mods for several days then they have obviously not needed to be seen and are doing an excellent job. If they were here making every second post in bright red then you'd start to complain about them being heavy-handed and not letting anyone have any fun. The best peacekeepers are those who are constantly unemployed.
I'm only a deputy mod for one forum five days a week but even then sometimes I resent having to go and check all the threads to make sure that people are behaving themselves. So far I've only once had to use my deep purple lettering to warn someone about trangressing and I don't plan to make it a regular occurence. The mods give up their precious time to give you little toerags a great place to come and discuss our beloved Civ games and related topics as well as those off topic and I just don't understand those who refuse to follow the basic and clearly displayed rules that are for our benefit and enjoyment.

TOERAGS??? "You whiny toerags!!!" Eh, doesn't have the panache of "maggots"... ;) Juize, I would NEVER ban you... :p

No, Knight Dragon is correct in that I post while at work, and I would not REALLY want to be a mod. Well, unless I had unlimited banning power. I'd be the Denis Leary of mods, if you know what I mean. "I got two words for ya. BANNED!" I don't have time to skim all the posts each day, and I don't go online on the weekends... And for all the reasons AOA posted too. It doesn't look all that fun, it's time consuming, and if I can't automatically ban people who whine at my modding, then screw it. I wouldn't truly ban people for nothing, but when it comes to the mod-bashing like we saw a while back, I have no patience there, ESPECIALLY if I were one of the mods.

I don't really want the job, and TF would never offer it. :)

Thats like saying you only higher people who DONT apply for the job those to me seem to me like they would be the best people for MODship cause they think they can actually do it and might enjoy it. ya gotta like what your doing.

Its a position of authority. An old amercian saying is "I would not trust anyone who wants the position to have it". Any one seeking authority is suspect and will be more carefully scrutinized that someone who is reluctant to take power. Call that "catch 23".

That would be like Aeon Flux, a Monican (chaos state) enforcer.

Yikes!

:yeah:

Even expertise doesn't matter as Starlifter would have been made a mod ages ago..........

VC should be a MOD, he has the better experience and only has 1000 post despite being here since 2000,
LOL, it looks like some people are viewing being a mod as some sort of award, or maybe something to be attained by postcount, etc. Or maybe something to be obtained by "filling the squares".

Personally, I come to this BBS because I like Civ, and the people here, and the fact there is a diverse thinking group of people (e.g., lots of points of view)... not because I'd want to police it. Being a normal poster gives you more freedom!

As a mod, you do not have the freedom to overlook things some posters do. Mods should to set the example and be responsible... and you can't always say what's really on your mind because everyone knows you're a mod. And maybe most importantly, the duty of a mod is to the BBS first, not self-glorification... and that alone should dissuade almost everyone from wanting to be a mod at a busy place like CFC!

Said another way, modding is really an exercise in MBE (management by exception). Mods don't generally get to do positive stuff... their job is to identify exceptions, which is by nature a negative task.

If you really think about it, why would You want to have to police the place? I'm talking especially the wild west of OT or maybe Civ3 (from the little I've seen in Civ3 threads). If a person's motives are simply to make CFC a better place, they don't need to be a mod to do that. If they want to police threads, then simply PM the mods when something is observed amiss. If their goal is to be able to put red comments in people's posts, well then that is silly. If they want to ban people, from what I infer, mods generally don't act on their own (unless a clear viloation occurred): they follow internal guidelines & review put down by the BBS owner.

BTW, the goal of a mod is not to ban people, no matter how some tend to joke about it at times... the real goal of a mod is to help the Website generate more traffic and become a better place. But the normal posters can do that too.... you needn't be a mod.

Though I don't know any of the CFC mods beyond this BBS (well, maybe I have seen them posting at other sites ;) ), it's my opinion that some of the mods would actually rather not mod... they do it to help (and some take quite a bit of crapola for their effort).

FWIW, my input for anyone that would like a "leadership" spot in any organization (CFC is an organization, btw), then I'd begin by privately talking with those what are the decision maker(s). In this case, that person is TF... e.g., I'd PM TF, and begin by focusing not on what modding can do for you, but what you can do for modding (just my opinion; btw, sorry, JFK, for mangling your quote ;) ).

:)

PS, Since you mentioned my name, I will say that personally, I get enough "Mod'" experience in real life, and would not enjoy modding at a place I come for recreational purposes! ;)

well mabey there are some people who feel like they need to be doing something in order to feel usefull, trying to Fill there time with something more productive than nothing, Give them something to do. Mabey normal posting just gets too boring.

Yes, every mod here is doing it to be productive and give something back to CFC. However, although I know many people who would make excellent MODs, not everyone can be a mod. As starlifter said, you can give a lot back just by reporting posts. It saves a lot of time trying to find the crap when someone reports it. You can help us help you! :D

And normal posting should never be boring, it is what you make of it.

What happens when you report? What if 5 people report the same post? Some mod will have a flood of pms? Does it post to the admin only forum? Should I ask another question? :p

A) An email gets sent out to the moderator(s) of the forum you are reporting the problem in. (the admin, TF, might also get emailed...not sure...only TF can answer that one)
B) 5 emails would come in.
C) Yes
D) No....it doesn't get posted to a forum, read A.
E) Please, no. :)

I guess the best way to become a mod nowadays is by volunteering to help with the site. :) Matrix got his mod position because he administers the GOTM, JFL_Dragon volunteered to do the Civ3 HOF, gonzo entered the staff as chat mod, Grey Fox does the tourney, etc. I usually consider current staff members first when there is a new mod opening. Being highly active on the forum also helps.

PH: I only receive email reports for posts in the Site Feedback forum.

Oh...so you can't check up on us and see if we're bothering to read our own! :D

Don't worry, I won't tell the other one - he's just the kind of character that would take advantage of such a loophole :(

AoA describes it as 'punishment' to become a MOD... So if i were to start calling everyone names, would that make me the next Super-MOD?
