How do you "bleep" out swear words?

I usually put an asterisk in the vowels, except with the A-word, I say @$$ (is that okay?).

The rule is that 'bleeping' out swear words is not acceptable here. When you write one (without censoring it), the forum replaces it with asterisks (****). We have no way of knowing whether the asterisks were put there by the poster or by the autocensor, so we don't allow them. By extension, we don't allow other characters either.

Why?

Thunderfall wants this to reamin a family orientated & rated forum. People should be able to come here, and allow their children to come here, without being exposed to the kind of language that they may not approve of.

Secondly, there are very, very few cases where that kind of language is required. If you can't make your point without resorting to that kind of language, then its probably a point you should carefully consider whether you need to make at all.

Not specifically on this forum, but when, for example, in class, we're reading a play (Proof) aloud which contains language the teacher blacked out, I guess I would change the word to something softer that would still make grammatical sense.

I actually agree with this, and my reply should be clarified that I do not have the habit of swearing online in a public forum, and my initial reply to this thread regards my visits to sites in general. I use judgement predicated upon the venue, and I certainly have taken note of the family nature of this forum!

I save my wrath of characters for the acceptable situation and audience. IMO public swearing is rather uncivilized and doesn't earn anyone real respect, but I totally understand the urge at times. 'Tis wiser to chill than mouth off methinks...

I never have a need for swearing.

It is sometimes difficult to know if an English word is swearing or not, because swearing in English is very different from swearing in my language. I know a couple of swear words in English, but none of them are considered as bad words when translated into my native language.

I hope that I do not make language blunders here, and please teach me in a friendly way if that should ever be necessary.

There's also the problem that different words are considered swearing in different varieties of English. There are things you can say in America that you can't elsewhere, and also vice versa (far more of the latter than of the former, I think).

However, I agree that if you can't make yourself understood on a forum such as this without swearing, then you really need to rethink your communication skills.

It is weird that some words get edited out when they actually have a correct meaning and sometimes swear words are inside other words that do not make them swear words at all. I could easily use some vulgar Australian slang and it will not be edited out, because this is an American site.

Their only words. It's the context that counts. It's the user. It's the intention behind the words that makes them good or bad. The words are completely neutral.

Just because the autocensor doesn't pick up on them, it doesn't mean that moderators won't.

I don't see the need to swear, though quite a lot of the words i use normally i wouldnt count as swearwords but others would so i keep it down on here.

I tend to merely mash symbols together, it doesnt mean any swearword, but symbolizes "angry" well enough. Its a persons own black mind that turns it into something.
