How far can you walk in 15 hours?

But don't forget the Romans that actually marched like this, though with heavy gear, were only young and strong people trained actually to do this kind of physical effort. I doubt an (edit: average) man can walk twice as much as that.

The romans did it in 5 hours... The rest was packing/unpacking.

My experience as hiker/armytime:

with heavy terrain I think of alpine like mountains/hills but without climbing passages or so. If 1/3 or more of your track includes slopes over 15% it counts as heavy.

light terrain/light equipment : 6km/h (90km)
light terrain/ ~20 kg package: 5 km/h (75km)
heavy terrain/light equipment: 3.5 km/h (52 km)
heavy/heavy: did never try

...if you are reasonably fit. I can promise you will be exhausted afterwards.

Don´t forget to plan short stops every 2h for drinking and eating.

Average walking speed is five km per hour, so in 15 hours a person walking non-stop at the same speed would cover 75km.

But then you will need to allow for breaks, drinking, eating and slowing down et cetera. I'd say maybe 50 km in 15 hours would be a reasonable distance.

I walk faster than normal people (about seven km per hour) so I'd say I would cover about 60 - 70 km allowing for all those other factors.

When I was about 14 I was at a summer camp where we walked approximately 40 kilometers a day with about 10 kg in the backpack, no fatigue, some foot sores. Best time of my life.

The romans expeced to march 20 miles a day, and that is inluding heavy gear, and making/breaking camp. An average person (that is fit), should be able twice that.

Except that an average man has not been through physical fitness training in a legionary encampment.

Around yo momma.

Seriously there are some good answers in here but I think it has to do with how much this average joe is used to walking.

Main issues are comfortable shoes, sore feet and possible whether he can move in the next day.

With the eating and drinking of course.

75 miles, 5mph.

providing good food supply.

An average man isnt going to be able to walk 5 mph for that length of time. As a person who has done more than his fair share of marchs (yes, they even make the admin types march) I will tell you that the standard pace is 4 mph = a mile ever 15 minutes. But an average person wont be able to keep up that pace for the entire 15 hours. So you are going to have to take a break ever 3 hours or so and depending on your fitness level that break could be anywhere between 15 mins to an hour.

Bottom line, I would actually have to agree with Warpus that 50-55 miles would be the absolute best a person could do if he were in good shape and used to marching. More likely would be 40-45 miles and thats assuming they dont give up part way because of foot blisters or fatigue.

Oh, and I happen to have just timed myself yesterday on walking a mile. Made it in 13:50 and thats hoofing it for sure.

Yeah, but you're assuming that people don't get tired.

People get tired.

Okay, by "average", I am not going with average American or Canadian.. there are way too many obese people here.

Average human though.. yeah.. you can walk at 4 km/h for 15 hours with a couple breaks in between. How long of a break do you need to take if you're just.. walking?

If anything your legs are gonna get sore before you get tired. That can be fixed with a comfortable pair of walking shoes.
