For better or for worse? If war didn't exist, what would life be like today? Is war an evil blighting the world, or something necessary to exist. Keep in mind the devastation caused by all the wars in the world, but also keep in mind that without war, great nations would never have come into being. Without war, the US would have never been founded. Without war, the Roman Empire would have remained a city-state. Without war, many useful technological inventions would not exist. Yet without war, many, many people (or their descendants) would still be alive.

War has not curbed overpopulation, so the answer must be its good. Its the ultimate arbitration mechanism between civilizations, inherently rewarding technological cultures over religious and social control cultures.

War is just another form of competition and competition has breed innovation. Without war, but with other kinds of competition a recognizable world could still be a possibility.

The threat of war has indeed stimulated innovation, but the actual wars let the humanity into its darkest moments.

Dark for some, opportunity for others: Whenever something is destroyed, theres always a lot of money and jobs to be made from rebuilding it. War stimulates economy, it helps spread money and technology, and it can help a superpower emerge. And, its self-replicating

Ridiculous poll.

War has dramatically influenced every facet of human civilisation, from technology, to religion, to genetics, politics, population distribution, etc. It can't be summed up as simply good or bad. Some of its effects are positive, some are negative.

If human beings weren't at each others throats, we mightn't be the dominant species on the planet, and we almost certainly wouldn't have accomplished the great deeds we have. On the other hand, we may well be happier. Who knows? How can we possibly tell? Conflict is a natural human state, we evolved to be predatory and territorial after all. does that make it good? No. But does it make it bad either? No. This question is just ridiculously simplistic.

This is probably the most ridiculous topic I've seen in this forum and that's saying a lot. Even worse than the top 100 civilizations thread.

I agree; this is pretty bad.

Yet, I feel like I must add my input! Personally, I believe War has acted in a good way, many Modern technologies have been discovered because of war. America never would've sent out their satellites or have gone to the moon without war, because they never would've started their space program without war.

Everything in the world is based off of war, or has contributed to war. Every single society has strived to be better because of war. Every country wants to be better because of war.

In the modern era, the Ideal of peace is only made real by war else where. We look up from our cereal bowls and breakfast plates in the morning to read or hear news about how war ravages in some unknown corner of our globe and we think to ourselves, "Wow, that is sad, it is a good thing we live in such peace." War creates peace. Peace we will appreciate.

So War is needed.

War friggen CARVED the world! Saying otherwise is ignorance.

Amen! Ditto! QFT! Everyone who voted war as a positive influence on humanity deserves to be dropped into the middle of some conflict! :goodjob:

Only cluster bombs, FAE, and nuclear bombs not striking missile silos explode above ground. :)
War has had no impact on the world, ever. We'd all be exactly the same without it. So nyah.

Really? Even the hundreds of thousands of child soldiers fighting around the world right now? They'd be the same if there was no war?
Exactly. Their lives would be no different at all.

War is both good and bad. It brings competitions and opportunies for some at the expense of tragedies of the less forunates.

I would argue that war hasn't impacted the world at all, ever, in any way. So you are wrong Cheezy, wrong, wrong, wrong.

Given your previous post, you must be ironic. But I must say the irony is completely lost on me...
