My family used 450 gbs in december, 301 gb in january and has so far used 60 in four days in feb. I don't know if I should be proud or embarrassed.
I moved last fall and the only cable provider at my new house is comcast. I actually really like the product, the menus they have dubbed the over dramatic X1 ENTERTAINMENT OPERATING SYSTEM!!! is actually really cool and a big step up from old style cable menus I had before that used to look like the preview channel from like 1995. The internet is blazing fast, 75 mbps is my advertised rate but I typically get 90 over 5ghz. The downside of course is it's insanely expensive. And their customer service sucks.
But they also have this usage meter thing built into their website so you can see how much internet you use every month. I guess it's cus comcast used to actually cap people at 250 gb back in like 2012. That may have been a pretty lofty number to hit in 2012 when netflix was still relatively young and average internet speeds were like ~10 mbps. I remember finally ditching my slow dsl for a 18 mbps line in 2011. But today 250 gb is nothing. One hd hour long show can use 3-6 gbs.
So you might think, so what, who cares? But comcast has already rolled out data caps in trial markets. They are of course soft caps. Go over and for a meesly $10 you can get another 50 gbs! It's automatically charged of course just like phone data. And then eventually you cap out at like $30 or so, and they have started offering unlimited access for $35 in some markets.
To me this just seems like a scam to raise rates yet not piss off the gigantic advocacy group that is senior citizens who probably use very little internet and would drop them if they raised rates. They claim the median household internet usage is only 40 gb a month but I just don't believe it. So I'm probably going to be out another 30 bucks or so every month in a couple years. Life's expensive I guess.
I don't know if you can track your usage, unless you install some software or your isp tells you what it is you probably can't tell. But if you do know post it! I'm wondering if ours is high or more towards the norm for a family of three with a three and a half year old kid who watches a lot of cartoons on netflix and amazon.
