Just keep in mind that a doctor might be concerned with a lawsuit for performing an "elective" procedure if the person changes their mind later. "The doctor didn't explain the risks/implications well enough! If the doctor
really explained it to me I wouldn't have done it!" If I had a nickel for every time I heard that... Well, I guess I do... come to think about it

... and as for waivers, you get "I never signed that!" "I didn't realize what I was signing!" "Oops the medical staff lost the waiver!" "Oops, the waiver wasn't signed", "Oops they signed the wrong form"...and so on.
My point is that the doctor might not be judging you or trying to protect you from yourself (or from the flames and damnation of your sinful ways), they might just be trying to protect themselves. Well this actually reminds me of a George Carlin routine... almost word-for-word... and I know Commodore shares my love of Carlin, so I'm guessing he agrees with you on this.
EDIT: See?
