Hi, fellow Mac users.

I've been playing Civ3 v.1.29b2 for about three months now and I've been looking to spice up my games by adding more resources and luxuries ( like coffee, rice and opium ) and those units that our PC counterparts have.

How do I do it? Anyone here have a step-by-step procedure for Mac users? :mischief:

Greatly appreciate the help.

First, let me welcome you to CivFanatics!

As far as I know (and I must admit I don't know too much about this), you'd have to download the mac CivIII editor to make any kind of changes. However, the editor only works with version 1.21(g?), so you'd have to reinstall Civ III (you don't need to delete the CivIII you have now; I have both on my mac), use the 1.21g patch, and install the CivIII editor in the same folder as the v1.21g CivIII.

I'm not sure about the limitations of the mac editor; I know you can edit maps and units, but I myself don't know how to create new units (tried once, but w/o much success).

Hi, again.

I have a Civ III editor in my computer in the folder that contains v1.21. I also have a separate folder that contains 1.29b2 which I use to play the game itself.

I know that I have to use the Civ III editor, I just don't know how to use it to add units and resources. I've used it to change city names, that's all.

I'm such a noob.

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but mac players should be able to download units/resources/etc. that were created by people with PCs. It's just a matter of putting them in the appropriate folders (check out the completed modpack forum; they would know more in terms of what you need to download, and I'm pretty sure that the organization/heirarchy of the folders in PCs and in macs are similar enough)

With the mac editor, all we can really do is edit pre-existing units from Civ III (and possibly ones made by other people).

1) Go into the "Scenario" menu, and select "custom rules" (ignore the warning)
2) Go into the "rules" menu, and select whatever aspect it is you would like to edit (citizens, units, natural resources, etc)
3) Most of the values you can fiddle around with; however, i would suggets that you stay away from changning values/criteria you haven't heard of (i.e. appearence ratio)

Hope this helps!

I thought I could work it out by following the instructions in Ginger Ale's article, but when I got to the part that told me to click on "Add Resource" on the CivIII Editor, I couldn't find such a button.

So now I'm stuck.

I think there's an article around these parts that provides a link to a patch for the editor that adds the Add button. I think it was posted by senecasax, so you could google for it or scan his posts. It was well over a year ago.

Thanks for that AlanH.

I tried looking for that file by Senecasax but with no luck.
I came across Brad Oliver's file "Civ3Edit_1321_b5.sit" to see if that was the one I needed, but when I clicked on it I only got a dead end.

Is this the file I need? Is there a more reliable link for me to go to so that I could download this?

Greatly appreciate the help. thanks!

That fileis just the editor. If you don't have that version then you can get it here at MacSoft. But that doesn't have the Add button. That's discussed in this thread. and it looks like it might have mainly been DiamondzAndGunz' work, starting from senecasax's.

Hi, AlanH.

I noticed Thunderfall's Article about a "Hacked Civ3 Editor" that reveals the Add and Delete buttons which, I believe, are what I'm looking for in order to add resources and units. But that's in the PC section. Is there a "Hacked Civ3 Editor" for the Mac available in the Civ3 Macintosh forum?

Also I came across DiamondzandGunz's discussion on the "C3EditRules.nib.zip" file but I couldn't find such a file anywhere in this CivFanatics Website.

Please help. Greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again.

OK! Some progress!

I was able to add the "Add" and "Delete" buttons to the Civ3 Editor. :D

Now the next thing I need to do is find this:

8. Before we see if the icon works, go to Scenario, then Scenario Properties. In the “Scenario Search Folders” line, enter “MyResources” (that’s the folder you created earlier!) - from Ginger Ale

I've followed steps 1 to 7, now I'm stalled at step 8. When I go to Scenario Properties, I can't find the “Scenario Search Folders” line that Ginger is talking about.

Anyone know how to proceed from here?

I'm not an editor user, but knowing something about the file formats, I suspect scenario folders are only relevant to PtW, not vanilla.

spyglass88,

If your still there I might have an answer that may help you.
I know from expiriance on the pc I can add units by going to the pidaicons.txt file in your civ folder, scroll down a little ways till you see somthing like this #ICON_PRTO_Settler, ext. to add a settler you would simply highlight, and cut this portion of the settler, and then under the next two settler program lines click and past. Then change the name of the "settler", to "Nordic_seattler" then copy and past the next two program lines and past under the new Nordic_seattler this will tell the game witch graphics file to look for.

Next you need to open up the civilopida.txt folder and scroll down to units section, here you should see this #PRTO_Settler you will see a couple of lines of this symbal ^^ then some text describing the unit . Do the same thing here copy and past using the name Nordic_settler where ever where the Settler appears, I don't think you should neet to use the _ to separate Nordic and settler every time.

then go into your editor open up teh edit units window and click the add button, then type Nordic settler, then down under one of the windows you'll see a PRTO_Settler replace this with PRTO_Nordic_settler. Then to the left you'll see a unit icon box, here you'll need to chose the settler Icon to use for your new unit, and of course set the peramiter of the unit.

I hope this helps, I know it's not recources but they are in the same folders as the units and the process to install them should be the same. good luck let us know how it works out.

Oh one more thing. You should try this using a designated civ III folder 1.21g since you will be changing the game structure its self by altering these files and it is a good idea to have a backup. once again good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hmm... I have the same problem with the Scenario search list.... But if we cold hack the editor to display the ADD button then it should be possible to alter the Scenario search button and get that to work. What must be found then is someone thaat has knowlkedge to alter the .nib files...

As I said before, I believe Scenario folders were only introduced for PtW. They allow different scenario files (xxx.bic) to own separate sets of Art, Text and resources files. They don't exist in vanilla CivIII. All you can do is to add all your art, text and resources to a copy of the main application folder, and use the editor to add them to your customised .bic file

PtW that is Play the world isn't it?
Because I saw that in the text folder of civ III v 1.21g there is a file that says Play the World. Any idea what that one controls?
