Hey everyone, I recently downloaded Rise of Mankind and its fantastic, however when I've tried to run its largest scenario (some 30 something Civs), I keep having MAF (Memory Allocation Failures). When I've looked online, it seems that other people with comparitvly weaker pcs have been managing alot better. Anyway here is my dxdiag and what I have done to try and allieviate the problem.

Bascially I was hoping for some tips to increase speed and improve optimisation.

Dxdiag Notes
While Direct X says I have 3.25gb of RAM, my system shows 6gb (I have installed 2 x 2gb and 2x 1gb dual channel), however because of my Vista 32bit architecture doesn't this mean I am capped at 3.25 for my Direct X (and therefore Civ because it utilizes it?)
As Civ on large games tends to 'spill over' into virtual memory, I have added another 100gb there.

Steps already taken,
-reduced memory overhead (themes other processes running ect)
-defragged for memory contionity
-reduced graphics to a decent standard
-attempted to raise priority on Civ 4 through Task Manager but it gives me a nasty error message and seems locked at 'below average', could this be a Vista bug, or has it got to do with Civ?

Oh, and I run Vista Ultimate SP2,

Cheers,

MAFs tend to come from overuse of RAM. Soo if you have 2 or more GB of RAM, my only real recommendation so far is to go to command prompt of Vista and type in this bcdedit/set increaseuserva 3072. That is ONLY! if you have 3GB RAM.
That only applies if you have 32-bit OS.

More than that, I have no more suggestion other than playing on on smaller maps.

Oh for the speed optimizations, look into RoM's subforum of Modmods and then look into the subform of that to discover an awesome modmodpack called A New Dawn. In that pack is a DLL that will increase your game speed by a significant percentage.

And welcome to CFC as well!

You could try using modules Static Leaderheads, No building graphics and disable modules Ethnic unit art styles (10 or so civs have them) - RoM concepts pedia pages should have info about those (or the readme.html file in Rise of Mankind folder). With these modules you can adjust the memory amount game uses for graphics. Though it's odd that your computer gets those MAFs as you should surely have enough RAM and video RAM.

I use XP Pro 64bit and I don't have Random CTDs. Actually I rarely have any CTDs. (8GB of 1066 DDR2 ram Dual core e7400 wolfshead chipset, ATI Radeon HD 4650 vid card with only 512MB of DDR3 ram.)

Note:This applies to 32bit systems as well as 64 bit OS!
Are you letting Windows run your Video performance settings? If you are, Windows will hog your Ram. Right click My Computer select System Properties then the Advanced Tab. 1st section under Advanced is Performance settings click to open. Then Select Visual Effects tab(should be the 1st tab). Adjust for Best performance or Custom.
I have used both but have settled on Custom as there are only about 5 options you really need.
Then select Advanced tab and check paging size at bottom. I use 2046MB.

Above the Paging file size I have also selected in both sections: Programs.

If you change the Paging file size and select Programs be sure to click Apply at the bottom then Ok.

Has worked for me for 9 months now. And worked on my previous system that was XP Pro 32 bit with only 2GB of DDR 400mhz ram.

Try it.
