Hurricane Ivan

Cripes, my friend's dad is supposed to get married in New Orleans next week. Let's hope the city's still there... :(

According to this forecast, Ivan is going to backtrack!

Well, if this thing doesn't make a last minute change, I'm toast! :ack:
Woo hooo! Ivan DID make a last minute change, and I'm still standing! [dance] At 10 p.m. last night, Ivan turned NNE, and went thru Baldwin County. That's the county on the east side of Mobile Bay. So Pensacola and the Baldwin County beaches are devastated, but Mobile just took a glancing blow.

Never had sustained winds of hurricane force here. Did have wind gusts to 75 mph, which is minimum hurricane force. About 6.00" of rain fell in Mobile from Ivan. Minimum pressure fell to 28.51".

My car had been parked in a cluster of 3 vehicles, next to a van. The other vehicles had windows smashed in. I saw a twig lying in the van. My car had no damage.

I saw some trees down. Other trees were still bent at a 45 degree angle. Lots of commercial signs were down. At the airport, a few microwave communications towers are down. Lots of water lying around. Still difficult to walk outside at times.

EDIT: My car is in these pics, it is the gold Grand Am. In the first pic, I parked next to a van. You can see the van has 3 windows smashed in. Judging by the way we were parked, and the wind direction, the twig(s) that smashed the windows flew over the top of my car, right into the van!

In the 2nd pic, a red car is parked in front of the van, and near mine. You can see the window completely smashed out, except for one small shard of glass. Yet my car had no damage!

P.S. My car is named Renee, that's my oldest daughter's middle name. ;)

Actually, Pensacola was hit very hard. Part of the interstate 10 bridge over Escambia Bay, was washed away. There is a truck on that bridge, part of which has been blown away. The driver is missing.

Here is the latest radar view of Ivan:

WOW, that is ALOT of rain heading my way on the USA Eastern coast

Well people I am in the middle of tropical storm Ivan. Between Ivan and Frances, Ivan definitly wins. I have counted at least 9 random rotations so far and two have touched down. I'm not sure if any damge has been caused by them.

It has already rained roughly 3 inches here west of Atlanta and roughly 5 inches south of Atlanta. And this storm is still 3 to 4 hours from being over with in this area. This storm is moving very slow which will pump the rainfall totals up higher. Is it normal for hurricane's to move this slow? The street is a little flooded and my yard is two inches under water in some spots. Note to others: If you have dead trees on your property, cut them down! A dead tree fell on some guys house an hour ago.

I'm actually suprised that my power has not gone out once. But here is my doppler radar. If you zoom in to the Doppler Radar 100 Mile map I am right about the first l in Douglasville.

I have been at the office, where I have had generator power all during Ivan. There is no power at my house, or my girlfriend's house. I am off til Monday. Signing off til then! :)

Yeah, and it's gonna backtrack right over Atlanta after sitting over the Southern Appalachians for a couple of days.....and no it isn't normal for hurricanes to mvoe this slow. There's a strong trough over the northeastern United States that's forcing this slowly east then southeast then southwest.

Good thing you got out safe Quasar. :)

Looks like Ivan hit Gulf Shores, AL and Pensacola really hard, but it doesn't seem to be as bad as expected. However, I heard that some of the barrier islands were split into two and a couple of miles of beach near Gulf Shores is missing. Now it looks like the Appalachains are just getting soaked with flooding rains. :undecide:

And don't forget about Jeanne. It looks like it's going to veer into northern Florida sometime next week.

Boffins, ;)

Have two hurricanes ever collided or brushed?
Do you get the sneaky feeling that there will be more hurricanes in coming years?

Technically, "blizzard" and "blizzard conditions" occur when visibility is less than 1/4 of a mile. Blizzards don't require snow or cold weather.

That would indeed be an interesting scenario if it is possible. Will they tear eachother appart? Or will they feed on eachother and merge into a 'hyper hurricane'? I have no skills in the field, but I added this image I pasted together of Karl and Jeanne's tracks in the atlantic for the next 5 day period. It seems they will be quite 'close' to each other at some point in 3-4 days time.

I remember that there was speculation earlier this year when Bonnie and Charley were active that, if the two maintained the same speed, they would collide and combine. Fortunately for Florida, unfortunately for my morbid desires, Bonnie sped up and Charley slowed down, so I guess we'll never know. I wonder what they would call such a hurricane? Hurricane Bonnie-Charley?

Okay, my power is restored, woo hoo! For those of you who care, here is a radar loop of Ivan striking the coast:

Man, believe it or not, Ivan just refuses to go away. It has now redeveloped in the Gulf of Mexico and heading westward toward Texas. It should be a Tropical Storm before it reaches land.

Same with Jeanne. Sounds like a sequel to a movie.

Ivan & Jeanne II.
