It feels physically good. It hurts, but it triggers such a rush that I'm addicted, usually in a particular area(s). Then it wears off, and I'm stuck with horrible aching sores that take days to disappear. Can someone identify this, because Google turns up nothing?
 
Ever since I started reading this thread I have been doing it too and it feels good indeed! Hope I do not get lip aches.

I think you shouldn't have opened this thread. It is contagious.

I am not addicted to pain at all. It's only this lip phenomenon that comes and goes.
 
When do these lip biting episodes occur? What else are you doing when you bite? Does it happen more when you're tired? If you catch yourself doing it how do you feel, do you try and stop?

I don't see a blatant correlation to anything in particular, although that's hardly cause for dismissing the possibility. Although the main times I recall doing it are at night, so tiredness might be a factor. I am perfectly aware of when I do it, and yes, I do try and stop. It's every bit as impossible as not scratching a tremendous itch.

On the plus side, I woke up and the urge was gone. So maybe it's over. :)
 
Maybe it is similar to the so-called nervous cough. A variation of the tick.

Afaik those nervousness-related ocd spectre ticks are argued to be heavily influenced by the metaphors which are related to their description, as in lip biting often signifying tention of various sorts.

If you get the urge again, I suggest replacing it with something else. Chewing gum might work, since that will keep your teeth and mouth busy.

I have problems with tics every now and then, and I've found they go away when you're too distracted to think about them. Just keep yourself busy, or find a way to replace it in a way that isn't as harmful.
