I think a new patch/update was just released!

Here comes the beginning of a thousand of patches in the next upcoming months! They should have postponed the release of this game.

Yar, they should have put it off for a while and covered a lot of these little bugs and polish issues.

Are you telling me that people here wouldn't have gone crazy had they done that?

Delay the game, absolutely people would have gone nuts. However, game delays are so common I doubt they have near the impact that a poorly polished / buggy game might have.

Maybe, who knows.
But how would the community react if they'd have postponed the game?
Probably quite angrily I suppose.

I, personally, don't mind a diamond in the rough and polishing it a bit afterwards.
And it's more polished than Civ4 (it took weeks to make it even playable for a lot of people). Not that that would be very hard :p

Disagree. There are bugs, but I would rather be playing it than waiting for it. Keep the patches coming though m'kay.

Be prepare to open your wallet too. I am sure we will see patches - and then we will also see more DLCs and expansions as well having the need for more patches. I assume later will have to pay for patches. This is the trend in gaming now.

How can I tell the game has been patched? I opened up steam but saw no download progress when I go to civ v. Is there a place to check the version numbeR?

2 patches within a week of a games release is A) An impressive show of support for the game and B) A disappointing lack of polish before it was actually released. Nice double-edged sword there.

As long as they keep supporting it, this game will turn out fine. It will be interesting to see what the patches address though, considering the issues w/ the game as-is. What's patched and what isn't will tell us whether or not this game was TRULY "dumbed down" as people seem to be obsessed with around here.

Can you give me an example of a game where people need to pay for patches?

As for DLCs: I can't wait for them! I love Babylon, it's well done, so I've got good expectations for the DLC.

In the main menu screen you can see in the bottom what version you have :)

None of these issues have effected my game play. So I don't see how I would have been helped by them delaying the game. Furthermore, it's probably because of thousands of people playing the game and only a handful having these issues that they knew they needed patching.

Well there you go people. This is why publishers will - and can milk more money out of you. All they have to do is release an unfinished product - and then sell pieces of it to generate more money to their big fat greedy investors.

Kinda odd that there are people who think that when a game is released, they simply expect that a DLC is something the developers wanting to add the game's replayability after they have bought it, when in fact they have already made them before they have released the vanilla version.

And it's equally as frustrating to see people like you who make the assumption that DLC is released ONLY to milk people for money as a cut-and-dry explanation as you make it.

Do you REALLY think that if the technology existed back in 1985, Super Mario Bros wouldn't have had DLC and/or patches? This is just the evolution of the business. PC games have had patches and expansion packs (which is just glorified DLC) FOREVER. So what exactly is the big deal?

I don't understand why people act as if this stuff is new when in reality it's been around forever. The only thing it's truly new to is console games. Expansion packs have been part of the PC culture for many, many years. Do you consider those milking the customers? Because if you do, then I guess we just disagree on principle and there's nothing else to say. But to act like charging people for updates to games is something new is.....a bit strange. It's been around PC gaming for a long, long time.

I agree.
Look at Civ4, only after the second DLC it became the great game it is now. It was a big DLC, but also quite an expensive one at that.

But let us not trail off the ontopic-path.

This is about the new 1.0.0.20-patch, not about Omnicorp's big scheme to extort every dollar out of little innocent gamers.

On the Super Mario bit. Didn't care about reading the rest. You will see why.

First of all. It is not about whether or not if the technology existed back in 1985, it is about the financial scheme that publishers do now as they get a little more sophisticated on finding new ways to create new ideas on how to get more money out of your own wallet. Bad choice of wording there. Technology? It's about money period.

No one forces you to buy the DLC though. I'm sure that a few of the free mods will be equal if not better than some of the DLC we get.

They couldn't have delayed the game. I'm sure the amount of complaints they got about a staggered Euro release was bad enough. God knows how the internets would have taken a worldwide delay. The game is playable and who really cares if you are doing some beta testing for them, anyone? Anyone?

Modding - Installer and permissions fixes. Should address any

5000, mother boards, 10,000 video cards, Windows XP, VISTA, 7 , 32 bit 64 bit 20,000 drivers both sound and video, 3000 sound cards, numerous install methods = billions of hardware software combinations. Direct X 9,10,11. The list goes on and on. Of course there will be patches. Then you get to deal with game issues.
