I live in Germany and as Adler already mentioned we still do have conscription (a remnant of the past...) and thanks to being male I was drafted. I then had to write a laughable essay to get accepted as a conscietious objector.
Which meant that they made me do social work for that year. Now the positive side of that is that it at least contributed something to society compared with the joke that basic training is these days. The negative side is that it still was government infringement on my freedoms.

Same here.

Not enough MBTs to go arround. Tony Blair should have a subsidy plan where people can sponsor an MBT and train in it on weekends :p

lol we only have 300 or so MBT so thats gonna have to be a hell of
a timeshare.

Obviously i wouldnt want to leave my family.. so id rather not leave
for iraq. Of course even if we brought in conscription..id be banned from
infantry etc.

When i see some of the drunken grossly overweight slobs that pass for youths today however

i do sometimes think a bit of national service might do them good ;)

no offence. It just sounds stupid that the Swiss need a navy.

Not a US citizen but if I would be drafted I'd leave for another country and never return. There's no way I'm going to fight a war with which I don't want anything to do with.

Would they draft a non-US citizen living in the US with green card?

I live in Denmark, I'm being drafted next year, and I'm going to serve. I oppose conscription, but of course I'm going to serve.

Pretty sure they do not. They cannot take citizens of another country and force them into war, it just wouldn't work. :)

I vaguely remember a story of sume dutch guys who had to serve in the first Gulf-war because they had been in US college and had received money from the US government. Can't remember exactly how the complete story went though.

Still need a navy to understand foreign navies so they can destroy enemy ships that could be a threat..

For example... RN SeaKing helicopters blow up submarines > Submarines can launch missiles that threaten Switzerland > Switzerland needs navy with SeaKing helicopters. Viola! :)

But the likeliness of subs trying to get Switzerland is minute. Even so, they would be entering restricted airspace.

Eek!!

Got some evidence? I wish to know how that ended. I hope The Netherlands imposed sanctions or something... :mischief:

So? If someone is gonna fire a nuke at you, anyone who prevents you defending yourself might aswell be considered the enemy.

Also, they may want to manufacture & export navy hardware and it's hard to be experts if you have no experience ;)

My uncle james got drafted for the vietnam war just after moving to Houston. My dad was working in Washington at the time and my uncle phoned him up to tell him to get the **** out before he got bagged as well :) My uncle was by that stage an American and was screwed.

Live in the USA, if I was drafted for the war in Iraq, I'd be packing my bags and heading to Canada. I do not believe in that war, and would refuse to fight in it.
