In actual usage, it normally applies to a situation where others are doing something bad/unethical, and profiting from it, and you cannot stop them. The idea being that, if you cannot prevent them from doing it, you may as well, too, and also gain the profit.
That would only be psuedo-joining. Sounds like a good plan though. Kind of like what the Trojans did.
