That's true about heaven and hell, but that was just his way of saying: "Focus on the life here, dumbarses, this is what we need to improve." My take on it.
Yes. Belief is heaven takes one out of the moment, its a coping mechanism. I'm sure its invention was designed to placate the disenfranchised. In aboriginals cultures with much less significant social/political hierarchy you don't here much about heaven & hell, reward & punishment in the afterlife. I haven't done a through study so such ideas may be stressed in some of them but I've never seen it.
If I were an ancient King in a highly stratified world I would love for my subjects to believe "blessed are the weak/timid/downtrodden/etc. for they will be kings in heaven". And for someone who may have no way out of such poverty it might also be somewhat comforting to believe such a thing.
However, I don't think these values are adaptive anymore. For example, from what I read, George W Bush is an evangelical. Why should he care about environmental degradation when he believes in judgement day coming soon anyway.
Christianity (and most modern religion) is divorced from the Earth & belief that some abstraction "above" is more important than flesh & blood on the ground may be the death of us all.
Moderator Action: Just a reminder - this is actually an RD thread, so no spam like this please. One-liners that have something to do with the subject are fine, but posts containing only smileys, pictures, or things like "hahahahaha no" are not.
