Immortal Cookbook I: Roosevelt

I don't know how you did it in the Monarch cookbook, but you might want to consider a weekly schedule such as saves by Sunday, votes by Wednesday. I saw that in some trash games and the regularity was appealing.

I don't know how you did it in the Monarch cookbook, but you might want to consider a weekly schedule such as saves by Sunday, votes by Wednesday. I saw that in some trash games and the regularity was appealing.

If you have to fit both playing and analysis/voting into seven days, that leaves things very tight (esp. for those of us who are often busy at the weekend).

Personally, I'd be most happy with about ten days per round (ie. a couple less than we've had so far on this round): 6-7 days for playing and 3-4 days for analysis and voting.

That way we shouldn't see too many people dropping out because they missed the window, and there'd be enough time for everyone to have a good look at the saves, make some comments, and decide on their votes.

Edit: Of course, if (almost) all the players get saves in well before the deadline, then we could move to the next stage quicker.

voting is now over. the scores are as follows:

nil points: Tycoonist  (and probs some others)
2 points: Sleepless, Rave
3 Points: Winston Hughes
6 points: Pigswill
7 points: Jet
10 points Gliese
12 points: Pete 2006, Carl Corey

A tie! however this hasn't taken into account my votes. i like:

1. Carl Corey
2. Jet
3. Gliese

so carl corey wins! congrats to him. that is the save we will play on from.

Carl, please remove the spoiler tags from your save. this round begins now and will end a week on friday.

I also think a fixed schedule will be good, the specifics of the timetable is not important for me, I wont know ahead of time if I can make a round or not anyhow.

Congratulations Carl Corey. I think the spread of votes showed that several approaches have the potential to work in this situation.

0AD sounds good to me.

As I almost never build early wonders, I am interested to see how I will handle this save.

Good luck to everyone in round 2.

Round 2 - 10 AD (slightly over) ;)

Spoiler :

Where to start? I thought we'd better grab some land before the AI, with that in mind my aim was to get some cities up whilst keeping up in tech. So how did I do?

Changed civics to slavery changed the build in Washington to a worker, 2 pop whipped him so the settler soon followed. That was it for my mm.

Tech path went pottery, writing, sailing, poly, aesthetics, priest. I managed to trade for IW, maths, alpha (this could be important) ;). Tech screen to follow at the end. I could get Monarchy from Alex for Alpha/Lit but if its still available would wait for 1 turn left on the GLib as he has marble as well.

With Rag/Alex both Hindu and Mansa Buddhist, when asked to stop trading with Mansa I agreed. It stopped the workboat exploring for a while but eventually Mansa couldn't resist a tech trade.

Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

Still getting a bit ahead of myself. With the 2 wonders I was hoping for a GE so who did we get.

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

A Gspy who I settled. I then revolted to Rep as the tech pace was pretty dire. As Ragnar was the nearest AI I changed all EPs to him so hopefully we would be able to steal some techs.

Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

Screenie from when I stopped trading with Mansa.

Ragnar spread Hinduism around a bit but I didn't convert. Just as well really. :D

Alex went on to found Conf and converted so that left Ragnar on his own. As expected it wasn't to long before the battle horns sounded. I agreed to stop trading with WK as well. The 2 wars going on are Mansa/Alex, Alex started it but it isn't going to well for him but at least he will slow Mansa down a bit. Mansa is going really well and definitely the danger in this game. The other war isn't going to well for Ragnar against WK although he hasn't lost any cities. I wish we had some military to take advantage but there is no way at the moment.

The tech situation at the end of the round. Note we did get another GSpy who I settled as well. Wasn't sure on Scotland Yard but would build it if we get another one.

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

Glance Screen.

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

At least were nobodys worse enemy.

Unusually the EP screen as it will play a big part in this game.

Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

I've just changed the emphasis to put more on Mansa as I think he will have a lot more to steal later on. Especially if Ragnar is gone.

The capital.

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

Not sure why the river plains hill isn't mined yet so please don't ask. :crazyeye:

Ten turns to the GLib after that will need to concentrate on getting the rest of our land filled up. More workers!!!!!! Just haven't had time to build them. Then look at taking on Ragnar.

A view of our new lands. I settled a city on the marble so New York could possibly try and build the Parthenon. We already have borders with Ragnar and Mansa which leaves us three sites left to settle on our piece of land. There is already a settler near the rice/gold. 1 more needed for the fish/fur and the third I'm not sure. If it picks up both the copper and iron it misses the clams so I would decide nearer the time but probably miss out on the iron or possibly copper .

With our EP points we can see inside Ragnars Capital.

Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

Now the outside.

Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

Way to go Ragnar lots of spears so lets build HA's. :p

Now there is one thing slightly worrying me.

Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

I was going to send a chariot exploring but I forgot . So would be an idea to find Gils lands and see where his troops head although it could be a barb city he is after. Just hope it's not us. :D

There is a big island to the East of Ragnar so that should be searched out as well. Just remembered no goodie huts but there might be some nice sites to settle.

Round 2 report:

Spoiler :
Before starting: changed some city locations as per some of my more expansive fellow immortal cooks. We do have the Pyramids and Great Wall after all, the first meaning that even cities with one food source and crappy tiles can be usable through specialists, the second, that barbs won't be a problem even with growing borders. Of course Ragnar and Alex will be worse than the barbs...

One more thought before I start playing: if we get a GE, how about self-researching CoL and Metal Casting and using the GE to bulb Machinery? We'd be one tech away from Maces. And CoL is pretty good for Caste System and cheap courthouses. We'll see how it goes.

Oh, and I changed New York to build a warrior. We'll need them for city "protection", and I don't care about barracks just yet, they were just there as filler at the end of round 1.

The barb axeman is keeping us from safely going for the copper city so I'm going for the fish-gold one instead.

Ragnar has a monster capital: 6 food sources... Man, that would be such a settler and worker pump if I were him!

imc1_r2_img1.jpg

Alex is as far as we explore with the workboat, as he can't open borders yet. And look where Mansa settles! He's just asking for it, as he's the worst enemy of both Ragnar and Alex!

imc1_r2_img2.jpg

Oh, and Ragnar is the worst enemy of Mansa and Wang Kon. Should be fun to plot wars here... ;)

Met Gilgamesh (not sure where...).

And we get a Great Spy. I decide to settle him and switch to Representation and Slavery.

Finished Writing, sign open borders with Alex. Cancel open borders with Wang Kon. There will be time for them later. Start Iron Working; with the number of cities that I plan to settle it would be good to find out where iron is. Alex is Hindu as Ragnar. And sure enough, in a few turns... Buddhism spreads to us. Great, just what we need, we'll have to piss off our future friends to keep our current neighbors from killing us. We have to decline when Mansa comes by the very next turn... Three Buddhists (Mansa, Wang Kon and Gilli), two Hindus (Ragnar and Alex).

Changed espionage distribution: Ragnar at 3, all others at 1. When I will have courthouses it will probably be even more biased toward Ragnar, as I'll most probably use some of those to steal techs/revolt cities when the inevitable war comes.

We finish Iron Working, and booooy, do we have Iron or what?

imc1_r2_img3.jpg

imc1_r2_img4.jpg

Next we go for Meditation -> Priesthood -> CoL. Mansa has Alphabet but we have nothing on him. Should refrain from trading with him anyway for now. Although he gives me Alphabet next turn! Wow, just wow... I was so surprised I forgot to take a screenshot of it!

Ragnar has no copper and Mansa is blocking his Iron.

imc1_r2_img5.jpg

He's looking increasingly weak here, the only problem we'll face when switching to Buddhism will be Alex.

We trade Alphabet for Meditation, Sailing and Hunting to Alex, and for Maths to Gilli (still nobody's worst enemy although he and the Alex/Ragnar block have different religions).

In case anybody had doubts about Alex:

imc1_r2_img6.jpg

It's like the guy had a DP with Ragnar! If other Buddhists join in I'm considering switching to Buddhism right away and declaring a phony war on Ragnar and/or Alex.

Changed espionage focus on Alex, Mansa and Gilli. Ragnar is weak and I might not even get to use my points on him, and Wang Kon is suffering Alex's attack for now.

Sure enough Ragnar is not long for this world:

imc1_r2_img7.jpg

Wang Kon comes to me for Open Borders. Ok, that's it, I'm opening borders with the Buddhists.

We end the round 1 turn away from CoL. We should whip Courthouses and some forges, then switch to Caste System as most of our cities don't have enough food for further whippings anyway. We should also switch to Buddhism, I haven't done it yet since the war is still on and nobody wants to help Wang Kon yet.

State of the World:

Cities:

Washington has a production potential of 26h/turn working two farms to sustain the mines (one farm post Civil Service) for a total size of 10, easily sustainable given our resources/Representation. We should consider making it our Heroic Epic city.

imc1_r2_img8.jpg

New York can run two specialists or two mines at size 5:

imc1_r2_img9.jpg

Boston is also a two-specialist city, or one specialist one plains hill mine:

imc1_r2_img10.jpg

Philly is getting a farm and should have 16h/turn at size 5:

imc1_r2_img11.jpg

Atlanta can work two mines and a specialist (engineer?), or three specialists at size 6:

imc1_r2_img12.jpg

Chicago is a dump city to get cows and marble. (a worker has been sent to pasture the cows) Nobody we know is going for the Great Library, we might have a shot there with Industrious & marble although I prefer to research Metal Casting -> Machinery -> CS.

imc1_r2_img13.jpg

Seattle can work two more grassland mines or three after its rice is irrigated:

imc1_r2_img14.jpg

San Francisco can work two specialists at size 5:

imc1_r2_img15.jpg

All in all, we have some mediocre cities, except for the capital, but they will do just fine for the early stage of the game. We need to get more premium land soon though.

Tech situation:

imc1_r2_img16.jpg

Only Alex has CoL, but we don't have too many potential trades for it yet. Monarchy is pretty useless to us, Calendar only lets us improve one tile, the only things that are on the table and we need are Construction and maybe Polytheism (which we could steal?). Gilli has HBR and Metal Casting as monopoly techs so far.

We might consider settling the island east of Ragnar. There are some good resources out there and it's going to be difficult to go to war against Mansa with all the Buddhist love running around.

imc1_r2_img17.jpg

Espionage bonus: Mansa is 6 turns away from Currency, Wang Kon is 7 away from Calendar, Alex is 18 away from Feudalism and Ragnar is 4 away from HBR. We should know what Gilli is teching the next turn.
I haven't explored more this round as I kept troops home in case we needed to dogpile on Ragnar or Alex. Might consider sending a Chariot to scout Mansa's land.

Round 2, through 10 AD.
Spoiler :
Basically, I popped a GE, so I decided to save him for the GL, since I didnt want to settle the Marble site until I had CoL and/or Currency. I settled a few more cities, and I am not in bad shape. I used the GE on the 2nd-to-last turn to fire off the GL, and also so I could trade around Aesthetics and Lit.

Here are some screenies:

Round 2, 1500 BC - 10 AD:

Spoiler :

I start of by appraising our situation. We have got two wonders, TGW and TP but have sacrificed expansion to get them. Washington is our only good city at this point (NY being a utility city that's served its purpose).
So we need to focus on settlers and workers and try to leverage the advantages the wonders have given us.
TGW lets us ignore military for a while longer but to get any use out of TP we need to get libraries up so that is a second priority.

1500: I start by switching NY to work the plains forest and build a warrior. I check diplo, WK is WHEOOHRN.

1475:
IC2-1010000.jpg

1450: Finish settler in Washington and send him south to claim the copper/gold/pig/rice site marked by CC, start on worker.

1400: Finish Pottery start on Writing, then Sailing (with binary research).

1375: Found copper city.

1350: NY finishes warrior and grows to pop 2, start on worker.

1300: Washington finishes worker, start on granary.

1275: Adopt slavery & rep (chose to get the rep anarchy a bit early to save anarchy turns later since the amount is partly based on number of civic swaps).

1250: Oracle BIDL (later find out by Gilga).

1225: Whip granary in Washington.

1200: Start on barracks in Washington while I regrow. GLH BIDL (Athens).

1150: Whip worker in NY.

1125: Start on granary in NY.

1100: Monument finished in Boston, start on granary.

975: Barracks finished in Washington, start on settler. Gspy is born and settled in Washington.

925: Meet Gilga. NY finish granary (after chops) start on barracks.

900: Finish Writing, start on Sailing. TOA BIDL.

875: WB finishes scouting the island east of Ragnar, I belatedly switch barracks in NY to WB to scout down the west coast (it is later stopped by barbarian galley and is now resting in NY). x(

825: Sign OB with Ragnar to scout along the east coast, then OB with MM and Alex for same purpose (not very dangerous this early when they're not bordering).

775: Colossus BIDL (Gilga) MC slingshot I guess.

725: Finish settler in Washington, start on Library.

675: Found Philadelphia in marked gold/rice spot west of Washington.

650: Finish Sailing, start on Aest (slider 0%).

600: Close borders with all but Ragnar as I pass their lands with WB since he's the only guaranteed trade partner without involving more than 1 OB and there's some tension between Ragnar/MM/Alex.

500: Jew shrine (unknown) and buddhist shrine (MM) BIDL.

440: MM obtains Alphabet.

425: WK demand trade embargo vs Ragnar, I refuse.

410: Gilga is WHEOOHRN. Washington finishes Lib, start on worker. NY finish barracks start on axeman. WK and Alex convert to buddhism so I decide to terminate my deals with Ragnar asap.
(MM, WK, Alex buddhist, Ragnar hindu, Gilga no-state).

380: Cancel OB with Ragnar, open with MM and Alex.

350: MM gives me a nice present.

Then WK dows Ragnar.

335: Find out WK is building THG. I trade Alphabet for:
Maths (Gilga) and
IW (Alex)

I could've gotten hunting as well but I'd rather avoid the extra wfyabta counter.

305?: Finish Aest, start on Polytheism.

245: Finish Poly start on Literature. Trade Poly for:
Meditation (Gilga)
Priesthood (Alex)

230: MM has sent some missionaries my way and now asks me to convert to buddhism. Well of course MM, I was but waiting for you to ask me politely. :mischief:

215: Confucianism FIDL (the unknown civ).

200: MM will dow Ragnar for Aesthetics but I decide Ragnar has more than enough on his hands with WK.

170: Trade Aest to Alex for Monarchy after 2 turns research on the latter. I plan to also trade it for HBR to Gilga but I need a turn of research there as well first so I delay Lit a little bit again.

150: Unfortunately Gilga asks me for Aest before I can suggest the trade and I accept.

95: Trade Monarchy + Poly to WK for Construction. After the Lib finished I grew to size 8 in Washington and then ran 2 Scientist specialists. This pays off and a GS is born. I build an academy in Washington.

65: MM asks me to cancel deals with Ragnar (stone for fish), I agree.
Found Atlanta on Marble.

50: Finish Literature and switch build in Washington from worker to TGL.
Trade Aesthetics to WK for HBR. Trade stone and sheep to MM for Ivory.

10AD: Parthenon BIDL (Athens).

Some notes:
I think TGL is safe without hurrying since none of the known civs has Lit. I'm chopping a forest there as well so ETA is 5 then the worker should finish in 2-3 turns.
Gilga is either going to attack us or MM or a barbarian city I think although WK is his closest neighbour.
I'm pursuing Monotheism to leverage the Organized trait for the building bonus and to spread buddhism around unless MM picks it up.
New York built some units for scouting and are building a settler I was thinking of settling the fur spot with.
There are 2 more spots after fur city for a total of 8 but we have access to catapults and war elephants and Ragnar is very weak so an attempt to grab Nidaros could be made before WK gets it (I've been unable to bribe WK to peace thus far).

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I turned down a plea from MM to get Aesthetics seeking to trade it instead (so much for his earlier gift).
I have not begged any this game but Gilga is pleased and have currency and spare gold so begging should commence.

EDIT: Additional notes added.

I'm going to sit out voting this round. I played, but somehow neglected to save afterwards (not too surprising, since I played tired and on autopilot).

But I'll be sure to post a lot of harsh criticism of your saves.

Thanks, but no, I was playing different games and the autosaves were lost.

Round 2:

Spoiler :
As always when picking up from someone else's save, I spent quite a while just looking at the situation, and thinking about how I might build upon it.

Carl left us with two very powerful early wonders, but not much else. Normally, with neighbours close by, my attitude is to go for a military buildup and war at the first opportunity, but that did not seem the best plan in this situation. We were way behind the curve for an early warmongering strat. So, instead, I decided to leverage the GW and the Mids to build a fast-teching economy.

In practice, this translated to:

(i) building very few military units, and thus building more workers, buildings, and (if desired) wonders, as well as putting greater focus on commerce/beakers.
(ii) aiming to get plenty of food in each city (ie. build farms), and focusing on population growth whenever possible.
(iii) securing, improving and working commerce-rich resources to pay the bills, and keep the beakers flowing (and to boost happy caps).
(iv) using specialists to power research (which, in the first place, means getting libraries up; later on it might mean a switch to Caste System).
(v) settling GPs in the capital, to take advantage of Representation and (where hammers are concerned) Bureacracy.
(vi) expanding at a steady rate, and avoiding long-range settlement (for the time being), so as to keep maintenance costs down.

I wasn't 100% happy with how I executed this, and I'm not totally convinced it was the right plan anyway. But, that said, the round went quite well by my standards. Here's a list of some key events (no dates; I'm afraid I didn't have time to take notes):

*Wang attacked Raggy, and has taken at least 2-3 cities from him. I'm a bit worried about him taking the Viking capital, and becoming overpowerful.

*I converted to Buddhism, thanks to a missionary from MM. This was a huge relief, since everyone but Raggy shares that faith. Without it, the no-military strat might well have turned out very badly.

*I popped and settled a Great Engineer first. Between the hammers and the Rep-boosted science, I think this has worked very nicely so far. My second GP was a Great Spy, which was also settled. At present, the EP are all focused on Mali, with a view to either war, sabotage, or maybe a little five-fingered discount on the tech-trade market.

*I got a hell of a lot of trade value from Currency, pretty much dragging myself from 'way behind' to 'almost even' in the space of a couple of turns (a fair amount of brokering took place). I'm thinking CS could prove similarly powerful.

*I got CoL first (extremely late for Immortal, I think), and Confucianism was founded in New York. Unfortunately, the missionary died trying to spread the new religion to the capital.

*I didn't go for the Aesthetics-Literature path, and Alex completed the Great Library near the end of the turnset. I did, however, build the Hanging Gardens, which fits very nicely with the 'vertical growth' plan, and increases the chance of getting more GEs in the future.

*Gilgamesh is currently WHEOOHRN. I doubt he's coming after us, but we're in very serious trouble if he does send a stack our way.

Incidentally, if you're wondering about some of the strange citizen choices, the HG came in this turn and I forgot to rearrange my cities to account for the population boost.
