The government has appointed General Fan Changlong as the new Chief of Joint Staff after General Xu Qiliang retired. Fan Changlong is not an unknown or random figure. He has for years been a hero among conservatives due to his strong anti-communist views and the books on military tactics and politics that he has authored as well as because he fought extremely well against the communists during the Second Chinese Civil War. The opposition is divided about this appointment: The Social Democratic Party has issued a statement that it considers the appointment of such a conservative and anti-communist General as attempt to control the armed forces and an act of authoritarianism while the Confucian Party has congratulated the government for choosing such a patriot as the new Chief of Joint Staff.
