something the devs once said leads me to believe that britain will be the last modern age civ slot. i can't find the exact words but it was to the effect of looking historically at the great struggles and rivalries between world powers.

thinking about the years being used as the modern period, 1750 thru 1950, it seems to me that the magnitude of Britain's involvement on the world stage (for better or worse) simply can't be ignored. even ignoring WW2, britain probably has a notable conflict or exchange in history with the majority of the modern age civs, certainly America France Buganda Russia Mughal Siam and Qing. i do not think we can say the same about Prussia / Germany.

further, from a earth TSL perspective, i think the Civ7 team has done well to pick base game civs that, as best as possible, give an uncontested area of the map for each civ that covers the empire at or near its peak. just looking at the 2 europe civs in each era... rome and greece split europe west vs east; normandy and spain split europe north vs south...napoleonic france at one point spread to most of the continent and covered most of prussia's home territory. britain at its extent spread out everywhere else BUT the continent, giving it a unique space on the map. prussia even at its height overlaps with france to a fair degree, not westward enough to avoid overlap with russia either.

finally i believe the trio of Goths/HRE/Germany makes way too much sense as a DLC pairing, it would be ridiculous not to package them together. if one of the first two DLCs it would also explain the availability of germanic wonders and unit models in pre-launch material.

feel free to disagree but i'm still putting my bet on Britain in base game, Prussia or Germany in early DLC.

A cogent line of reasoning.

It might be the part where Ed Beach talked about London being a city of multiple layers: Roman, Norman and modern British

One of the modern ideologies is also Fascism, so one would think that they would also put the nation most known for that in the game, unless they pull a fast one and have modern Italy. :mischief:
The English language and Democracy is already covered by America, and geographically Britian is covered by the Normans in the Exploration Age. Sure you could count the countless other territories of the British Empire as well, but I don't think that's as important considering those places already are covered by America, Mughals, and Buganda in Africa.

Based off of the screenshots we've also seen what looks like a Prussian commander, so I feel that all things point towards Prussia/Germany in the base game. Not to mention we probably know of Frederick the Great to be in the game based off a leak, which also had Catherine. Plus, Catherine will probably want to go into Prussia/Germany as well as one of her historical choices.

Impossible to say for sure I know, but I think you might be onto something.

With all the newly revealed info and screenshots considered:

1. Would they really add Britain without its monarch as a leader in the base game?
2. What prominent British Monarch would fit between Isa- and La- alphabetically?
3. What prominent British non-ruler would fit between Isa- and La- alphabetically?

Gandhi. The other gap.

In general I share the sentiment that lack of Britain is extremely disappointing. This is only game of course, but we could expect some basic respect for the lore. If you make a game around 1750-1950 and you ommit the Britain, yet you include some unneeded civs like America or Germany then it just does not feel right. America has 3 leaders. It is like a false note.

We could have Gandhi + Britain, instead we have Fred II (the worse one in my opinion) and Germany.

With the various in game hints towards germany/prussia, i think they are in.

Crossroads of the world is a great name for a DLC that might include Britain due to their global empire. It will be interesting to see if they include an England and GB, or England/GB + some of their dominions.

King John is the first one that comes to mind, but he also wouldn't be one of my top choices. Though having an ability that relinquishes some of your traditions would be an interesting mechanic. :mischief:

The first 4 DLC civs and 2 leaders will be released just a few weeks after the base game in March. It‘s basically „base game +“ at this stage. And I’m sure Britain and a leader will be in this pack. So, no one needs to wait for a long time. And all reasoning why Britain needs to be included seems to apply to „base game +“ as well.

Yeah, that's probably the correct reasoning: for all intensive purposes in the base game.

I still feel like they might wait and be revealed in "Right to Rule" with Big Ben, instead of Oxford as their associated wonder.

Britain, Germany, France, and Russia are all imperative for a modern age. The fact that we wont have all 4 at launch is disappointing. The 4 main European drivers of modern conflict and diplomacy deserve a spot. Globally I'd add the US, China, and Japan as essential modern civs.

It is very likely that the 2 first DLCs will have several European Civs. There are a lot of European leaders so it might be that not as many European leaders will be added in 2 first DLCs.

I hope they release Germany soon so the speculations about Britain being in the base game will stop.
