There are some places where you can get a student discount of some software,
http://www.gradware.com/
and I think the official Adobe site has a link for discounts too somewhere...

But most people are content to use Gimp, Paint.Net, Inkscape or MS Paint for their photoediting needs.

I mean it's been a while since someone just had text as there avatar (which I think it pretty cool).

EDIT: Don't use GIMP, it sucks. Just get Photoshop trials.

I've tried it before, and it was overly complicated and annoying to get even the most simple things done (compared to photoshop). Especially when dealing with layers and such.

Nah, it was the newest version, and after an hour or two of trying to get it to work, I gave up and ran back to using Photoshop trials.
