[RD] Individualism of Responsibility: shifting the burden to consumers

The % was a lot lower, the loans system was brought in to put more people through uni.

So your saying Boomers got free tertiary education is inaccurate. Those few who went to university did but most finished their education at 16 or 18. Still not seeing the relevance to this thread.

Seems to me like this can all be boiled down into a tragedy of the commons issue. Someone will take advantage of the low prices or lack of protections, and effectual answer is not to shame those people, but to shame the engineers and exploiters of the scenario. There's too much to gain by raiding the commons.

I don't see why the debate between consumerism and consumption is really relevant, capitalism can still exist alongside legislation that forces companies to treat workers like humans and not destroy the planet, with minimal impact to our spending habits on buying stupid things.

Boomers in Australia got free tertiary education between 1974 and 1989, the period during which university also became massified. Virtually the entire boomer politician cohort currently in charge benefited from this.

Smart phones alone have decreased consumption and environmental degradation through the convenient fact that a Turing-complete device in your pocket can do lots of stuff. All the separate GPS gadgets, CDs, thermometers, alarm clocks, flashlights, and so on don't need to exist anymore.
I don't own a smart phone. I don't need a GPS, because of this odd talent I developed decades ago, called "reading a map" and "knowing how to tell which way is north". I'll admit that I have a lot of CDs, several alarm clocks, I recently bought two more flashlights, and the building manager suggested I buy a thermometer for inside the apartment in case I need to convince TPTB that own this building that it really is that chilly in my living room.

Mostly, I think individually boycotting mega-corporations is silly because they have grown to the point where individual action is meaningless to them.
It worked when Paul Bernardo thought he would be able to sell his book on Amazon.

The smartest, best educated and cleverist of each generation do well when their generation takes the reins of power. It is nothing new.

Obviously you are completely unfamiliar with Australian politics. Most of them were just student politicians and staffers.

Or those who have the best connections.

I tried that but sticking my head out of the window of my Corolla in order to see where the sun was kept getting me in trouble, and was useless at night.

I think you're only allowed to do that if you're a dog.

Pics or it didn't happen.

Imagine millennials trying to pull off D-Day.

They would land on the beach waving their down with fascism signs and bleating about how unfair the world is and look for some fascists to swarm. Only to find out they're landing in Delaware.

Assuming the GPS on the I phone worked, the 3 who bothered turning up to invade (the rest stayed at home to protest about being in the army/and or to stoned) they find out the real fascists shoot back.

Of the 3 who turned up 2 wander off to find some organic kale and complain about global warming caused by the Sherman tanks.

The last poor bastard runs up the beech, gets shot dead and the rest blame him for failing some sort of purity test and/or being pro fascist for not trying hard enough.

But wouldn't we be up against German millennials. That'd be pretty cool. @yung.carl.jung and the rest would help us do the D-Day. And then we'd all go on like a big road trip to Berlin

According to Wikipedia,

The Pew Research Center defines millennials as born from 1981 to 1996, choosing these dates for "key political, economic and social factors", including the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Great Recession, and the Internet explosion.

Millennials were likely fighting in the Iraq War (March 2003 - December 2011) from the beginning.
