"Hungover?" Makena Chipo's cheerful voice didn't help Louren's disposition. He opened his eyes, the world swimming into sharpness. He was in the break room. "Come on, got the morning news to do."
Louren Fons waved at his fellow anchor in the vague way that suggests 'yeah, yeah, I know, and I'm getting up'. "I'll leave you to get ready. 10 minutes." The eternally cheerful Makena left the room.
The award-winning anchorman had to steady himself as he got up. He rubbed his eye and made his way to the coffee machine. The coffee was, as expected, terrible. He'll get that van der Merwe kid to get him some real coffee from the canteen when he got to the new room. But it woke him up enough to see that his tie wasn't straight. He fixed it up, and tried a few smiles in the mirror, just to make sure he still had it. He did.
In corridor he passed a few faces he recognised, briefly acknowledging them. He arrived at Studio 9. Pushing the door open, he saw the usual chaos that came with a live show going on air in 5 minutes.
The floor manager rushed up to him and directed him to his seat. Not that he forgot where it was, but he needed a basic run down of the stories. He asked for coffee. The work experience boy was sent to go get it.
While the make-up lady made him look acceptable to the viewing public, Louren thought. His first big break was covering the Namibian War of Independence. That's where he met his wife, in the war-torn streets. But he really got noticed with his reports in the South American invasion. In fact, he'd just finished a documentary on life in occupied Rio Gallegos when he got the call that he had made anchorman of the morning slot.
The countdown had begun. People rushed into positions. Shapes in the gallery moved around. Louren and Makena began to appear to be talking. "5...4...3..." the last two were motioned and...
"Hello, I'm Makena Chipo."
"And I'm Louren Fons."
"And this is
Ontbijt, only on UBC."
"And boy do we have an exciting show for you today."
"That's right, Louren. We have Marius Lieke in to tell us about his new show, Shades of Grey, premiering this Wednesday."
"Our chef Nomusa Kamaria will be doing some interesting things with onions."
"And our money-saving guru Cailyn Roosje will be telling you how to look fabulous for less with the January sales."
"But first, and I think the biggest story of the year. President Mbeki was sworn into office yesterday. He takes over from Nelson Mandela today, leading South Africa into the new millennium."
"Mmmhmm, most of the Union was celebrating last night, especially in Patagonia when they heard the news."
"That's right. Why don't we have a look at that inauguration again?"
In the gallery, buttons were pressed to roll the footage taken the day before.
"President Mbeki of course promised to combat the AIDS epidemic currently terrorising the north by handing out free condoms."
"Yes what we didn't get on film were the Catholic protestors claiming that Mbeki was the devil."
"Yep. By the way, we have the new Secretary of State in tomorrow, don't we?"
"We sure do, but now we go to Beulah Madyson with the sport..."

There are three main TV netwroks in South Africa at the moment: the Union Broadcast Corporation, which has mainly moderate views; South African Television, which tends to lean to the right, and famously supported apartheid; and Vos, the youngest and most liberal network.
