Intel Core Hardware Anti-piracy

you know i have thought about this all day, and i now dont think this has anything to do with piracy. i know this because it is so obvious that pirates wont be affected one bit by this.

So i ask you now, whats the real reason for this hardware?

Conspiracy Theorists Unite!!!

ahhh you know me too well

im just running on the assumption that the people at intel have better than an A+ certification, which is all i have, and would know the capabilities of the internet; some of the most basic capabilities.

Simplist answer is usually the real one. They sense they can profit from it. If they get the backing of the industry to allow specific 1080p content solely for their chip, that will indeed appeal to some buyers.

And who knows, maybe you and the others are wrong and it will help with piracy. /shrug.

i just think its going to be a bug fest because of this. and how much more "Trusted Computing" hardware are they not even going to bother to mention.

Netflix and many US broadcasters have been streaming HD (720p I believe--yes, that is technically high definition) for a while now if your connection can handle it. (And most DSL and cable connections should be able to handle it, my old 3mbps DSL connection did). Battlestar Galactica on Netflix streaming, for example, is in HD and looks great.

I'm not in the US so a lot of those sites don't work for me. Sometimes I'll see something on youtube which is good quality.

My connection likes to choke on streaming videos. I think the ISP might throttle it or something.

Yeah, mine is borderline for that and it drives me crazy. It always, always starts out trying to pull down the HD feed, manages it for a couple of minutes, then has to re-buffer with non-HD full bar or maybe missing one bar. Honestly, I wish there was a way I could just set something somewhere that would force it to always just try one bar less than full and no higher.

Yeah that strikes me as a dumb way to do it.

I remember that occasionally happening, very annoying. (Part of why I upgraded my connection). Can you click the "HD" icon on the bottom of the screen to off? I may be mixing up streaming clients but I think Netflix allows you to at least turn the HD off permanently...

Ah, well if you're not in the US many of our draconian copyright restriction rules don't apply to you, so you can torrent to your hearts content! We here in the US have to submit to our MPAA and RIAA overlords.

Neither Aliant nor Eastlink throttle streaming video.

OK, thats good to know. But it keeps choking anyways. Maybe its cos Ive only got broadband (i think DSL costs something like $170 a month. yikes)

How to stop Piracy....

Make nonpirate services worse!

Surprised it took till page 2 for someone to say this.

Imagine, you are a computer user who has this type an AMD chip without this feature in the future. You are a loyal Netflix user who streams then BAM, you need to have an Intel chip to stream the video.

Netflix won't give you a refund of your hard-earned cash, and if you want to use Netflix in HD, you need to make a costly upgrade.

What do you do? Some people will feel cheated and will say "@#$% it", and otherwise by the book people will delve in piracy to get what they paid for.
