It appears that Civ V was automatically updated sometime yesterday. After this update, diplomacy text is missing (can't initiate open borders or trade anything, also can't see when AI player offers a trade or asks for something).

Also, the tech screen isn't working right. I can no longer queue techs (Shift+Click). That's minor though.

I play Civ V on two computers (at different times) and both act the same (identical with mods).

You're going to have to play a better-maintained mod instead. Thal is apparently no longer supporting the game until after G&K comes out.

Thal said he isn't able to access vanilla right now (and fix the bugs that have arisen with the June 14 patch) because he is working with a beta of G&K so he can have a version of VEM/UP for G&K on release day (there are issues going back and forth between G&K beta and vanilla apparently).

This is one of the best-maintained mods out there and I'm certain Thal will leave a working version for vanilla, so please stop scaring people off, both here and on the workshop.:)

I thought "no longer going to continue development of the pre-expansion version" meant only that new features wouldn't be added, balanced tweaked, etc. That's pretty standard for mods and merely what I'd expect. Especially since it's soon followed by "release a compatible version once Firaxis puts out the vanilla/expansion compatibility patch". Which indicates you can "fix" the game by waiting a little while for Thal to stop whatever the *heck* he's doing - sleeping, working, having a RL, etc. - and gets the mod updated.

OTOH, I can see some truth to your view that "downloading the mod will break their game". You just need to interpret what's intended as a temporary incompatibility as "breaking the game"*, and what Thal said in the worst possible way. Is this the an internet forum? Yes? Worst possible way it is.

Well, *worst* possible way would include seeing a deadly threat in that smilie. "Nearly worst possible way," then.

*Note, btw, if your game is broken in this way you can fix it by de-activating the mod.
No, really!

I'm not trying to scare people off, I'm trying to warn people that downloading the mod will break their game, by echoing the message Thal posted himself here:
http://civmodding.wordpress.com/2012/06/06/expansion/

If I'm incorrect, please tell me how to fix it, I love this mod and I'd love to play it.

Okay, cool, but a more judicious use of words would be appreciated. By implying that the mod is poorly maintained and telling people "there nothing to see here, go home" sounds a lot like something that starts with a T and rhymes with "rolling". ;) Glad you aren't!:)

(And as Tarqueine said, the mod is simply not compatible with the latest patch - it won't "break" the game..)

I apologize if I'm coming off as alarmist or something, but yes it will only break your game with the current patch. It did indeed work just fine prior to that. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any way to roll the patch back.

edit: I reread the above and see that you may have misinterpreted "break" as meaning permanently damage. It never occurred to me that it could be interpreted that way, but I'll try to be aware of it in the future if you think that's how people are reading it. Of course removing the mod will fix the problem, maybe I have too much faith in humanity that I thought that was obvious. I was honestly just trying to help people because there was loads of confusion when people tried the mod and found that they couldn't play the game with it. If the comments warn them not to download a mod, people at least have some way of knowing they should avoid it. The thing that finally made me decide to post that warning was when I looked at the support forums and saw people reporting the trade bug from this mod as a bug in the patch, not realizing that the mod was to blame, and therefore having no way of knowing that removing it would fix their game.

I really just wish he would take the mod off the steam workshop or something, as it's basically just a trap right now for anyone who unwittingly downloads it.

Like I said, it's cool - and I apologize if I came off as a bit rude there, it was late at night and I was tired.:p

Agreed. (Or at least add a warning that it isn't compatible with the recent patch.)

GTK that I'm not the only one who's had a problem. I have slight disagreement about the maintenance of the mod. Thal et al, in my opinion, have selflessly and awesomely mainted CIVUP. Firaxis needs to hire the dude, because he knew how to make the game better. I can't stand playing un-modded CIV V. The balance is horrible. :mischief:

Why hire him when he will clearly do it for fun?

Seriously though, what are you waiting for Firaxis? Hire him already! The man knows what he is doing!

I put the mod on the workshop several weeks ago to see how the workshop operates, and didn't anticipate it would be available to the public so soon. I should have set it as an expansion dependency - but hindsight is 20/20. :)

Thanks Thal! I'll try to have more faith in the future that you wouldn't just abandon support for people who had decided not to get the expansion. It's a moot point for me anyway, as I decided to purchase it after hearing some good reviews (and if it lets me play CivUP sooner, all the more reason).

Right, I do plan to update the vanilla version too. It will just take time and I'm focusing on the expansion version for now, since I'm guessing most people will get it. :)

Ideally the devs would have designed the interface code to work for either vanilla or expansion (since the expansion is basically just a DLC)... but they didn't, so it's a little difficult to make 1 mod that works for both versions of the game. I'll probably have to create a side copy of the project for vanilla.
