Looks like the debate kind of got in here. I don't mind having gold (as sort of a currency), since even gold was traded for objects. Currency is coins made out of stone, or metal, representing gold, and atleast tries to set a standard value. I wouldn't mind a hybrid system, where you could barter with your goods, or your gold.
A typical bartering session might end up like this:
"I'd like that copper plate, but I don't have 20g. I do have 15 sea shell necklaces, and 20 cotten clothes"
Then the store owner can have 20 cotten cloths, and 15 sea shells in their inventory.
