IOT Developmental Thread

Again – SOIs are not really a problem at all. They are a natural part of the geopolitical landscape. It is a statement of interest in territory that a nation wants to expand into.

It is not an iron clad guarantee or protection of that land. At all.

I could claim the whole world as my SOI, but no one would honor it (nor should they!) and I certainly couldn’t defend that claim.

All other SOIs are exactly the same, regardless of how large or outlandish they may seem. If I can’t protect that claim, then it isn’t mine.

There is nothing wrong with people claiming SOIs. There is something wrong with other people automatically honoring those SOIs, or defending other’s extravagant SOIs.

SOIs should not be ruled upon at all. The only restrictions on them should be the ability of the player to protect them. Period. Let them become an integral bargaining chip in the world of diplomacy that all IOTs become.

They have great value in expressing territorial desires of nations, and in testing nations’ relative strength to one another. If you tinker with SOIs from a rules perspective, then you limit the options available to the players.

One more thing, in I&B2 can people pls make compromises, I noticed in I&B that people just went screw this war, and it made some empires implode some explode.

What I was trying to say is that there shouldn't be claims; players should just expand mercilessly, with whoever gains a province being the one who gets there first, or whatever.
The SoIs of IOT are claims over unclaimed land, not the same as an actual SoI, which is influence in foreign governments and territories.
Should have worded that clearer, sorry.

I couldn't agree more with you SK.

I think there is value in being able to say "I want this piece of land, and if anyone gets in my way there will be trouble between us". There is nothing stopping someone else from getting there first, but I have put them on notice that I will not like that and it will likely mean a very hostile relationship between us moving forward. It is up to the other nation to decide if pissing me off is worth it (or if I am even a threat to him in the first place).

sorry to break up this very interesting discussion and all that, but I've been thinking about TESIOT, especially the religion.
I've decided to streamline religions to Divine Worship, Daedra Worship and Tribunal worship.
Tribunal worship stays the same.
Daedra worship gives you a 10-15% combat increase bonus.
Divine worship gives you more Magicka and Stability.

So if I worship Talos, I would be granted more Magicka and Stability?

Magicka comes directly from Magnus, the Sun, which is a rip into Oblivion as I recall and thus Aedric (Divine) worship should not grant extra magicka.

I have a far better way to handle SoIs and alliances than all yall.

Anyway, how does one worship two dead gods and a probably-not-dead-but-still-not-around god?

Because I totally knew that existed prior to right now.

I'm up for anything as long as I don't have to draw or do a significant amount of work.

So I had this thought for an IOT. It would have to be relatively hands off for the GM unless this will be one of those things that waits until May when my workload decreases. But the premise is essentially a United States in WW2 in an alt history. Rather than the south being completely destroyed before they reunited, Gettysburg caused the Union and south to meet, and create a third constitution closer to the articles of confederation, but not quite. The 'how' isn't so important, as the point of divergence is merely a means to get the setup of the game I envision. Essentially, each player would take control of a state at the entry of the USA into WW2 (with an RNG picking those in control of 2, or even 3 states). They would control production in their own state, as well as controlling the military units raised from their own state. essentially, it would be their own country, and mechanics can be created and balanced later. But they would have to work together to fight the wars against Germany and Japan, both of which have been beefed slightly in this alt history. During the war, and after if the IOT reaches that stage, the states will quibble among themselves over coordinated strategy, especially between coastal states with the navies and inward states with the men and planes. Internal events would proceed apace, whether to ration or not must be decided etc.

When signing up, players will provide 3 states in order of preference they would rather end up controlling. Then, they will be randomly divided, with final choices influenced by the preferences. BUT, 2 players will be specially chosen by the RNG and my trust they will stay quiet about it, and they will take over Germany and Japan. That way, its still player on player with a bit of intrigue going on.

So all in all, a twisted War Room combined with IOT mechanics and an RP flavor of play within the states themselves regarding national issues like peace and alliances. A lot of stuff would have to be worked out, but if people are interested, i would be willing to inch away on the work.

If we can't invade each other, no one will play it

I think it could work and that it would be fun. The players would need to change their ways a bit but I would like to give this a go.
