IOT Developmental Thread

Is it really a big jump from "Germany is catholic and expansionist, and I'm protestant" to "Germany wants to shank me until I bleed land?"

You provided no proof of in-character statements. I see statement made by Tyo, but not by the actual leader in Germany in game. These statements were posted in an OOC chat, and therefore validity of these statements should be questioned.

Since OOC proof or reasoning should not be used to drive IC actions, then it isn't hard to see why screencaps of the IOT chat should be considered not only scummy, but illegal under the rules given to the subforum, unless the game has a dedicated chat.

Edit: It also doesn't change the fact that IOT chat screencaps in the game thread theoretically are illegal under the terms of the IOT Rules and Guidelines.

To quote the wiki article about me: "He is notable for a casual and highly irreverent conversational style that frequently blurs the line between roleplay and OOC chat."

So yeah, I just used my Unique Ability.

Seriously though, I already figured Tyo was going to pull the Lebensraum card, because he's pre-WWI Germany and somehow also Hitler. Mosher isn't a blind idiot, so he was probably suspicious at the very least of his big, drunken neighbor on half his borders. Taking three screenshots did exactly what a paragraph of text would've.

Which has little bearing on...anything.

Which is amazing to hear, given Tyo has posted nearly nothing in the thread about any of this.

As the Netherlands, the only thing they realistically would've seen was a country that has been on the borders for decades.

The screencaps, again, are scummy, and the nature of the chat is largely OOC.

Therefore, the only way to post the chat screencaps would've been OOC tags, but if they're OOC, nobody would be allowed to act on them, meaning posting them in the first place would be pointless outside of meta.

The difference between a paragraph of text and three screencaps is that the former would be in-character and not bringing in OOC statements, while the latter is inherently scummy, which is why the vast majority of GMs banned screencaps from the IOT chat.

3. OOC comments in a game thread must be clearly marked as OOC.
4. OOC posts in a game thread should avoid mentioning other players by name except in a positive light.

These two rules alone should've wiped out the legality of screencapping from the IOT chat in the first place. Unless a chat is started for the sole purpose of Dunkelheit diplomacy, screencaps of the chat just aren't kosher, ethically or mechanically.

You're asking IOTers to behave like NESers (and even then, I doubt they're going to take no action if someone OOC says they're planning on invading). IOT has always been pretty lax about OOC knowledge.

And hell, I wasn't asking for a Coalition to murder Tyo's fun, just a DP to ensure mine. If anyone expects Tyo to shoot for world conquest, then they have no sense of scale.

I can't count how many times I say I'm going to conquer large swathes of land in an IOT in chat and then it actually happens.

Because it kind've never happened, and I always say it.

The reason this is a problem is because people take things out of context, and then they try to put it in context. If you really aren't going to act on what I said because you know better, it doesn't mean everyone else will. It's better to leave the chat where it is rather then possibly causing derailment as people panic over things that aren't there.

I'm asking IOTers to follow the rules agreed upon by most when the Rules and Guidelines were established.

Etiquette Rules:

1. Upon joining a game, a player agrees to abide by all rules of the game, both mechanical and in terms of etiquette.

As quoted above, the rules do go on to poke holes in the legality of screencaps from an OOC chatroom.

I feel like you're blowing this out of proportion. We don't have any other issues of legality.

Arrow said in the chat just now that if you say you're going to invade someone in chat, it should be taken seriously if you're acting seriously, and I kind of agree. I am aware that 3/4 of it was a joke, but that 1/4 of "must unify with Hamburg, Holstein, and Benelux" was the bit that was relevant. There is also the part where Nedim allowed it.

Pretty sure Rule 2 and 3 under the second section of the Rules of Guidelines clearly blow holes into the legality of posting screencaps in the tread of the IOT Chat.

There is also the part where Nedim allowed it.

It doesn't matter if Nedim allows it because the Rules and Guidelines trump GM Rules of Conduct and have for well over a year now.

Screencapping from chat is only one step down in scumminess and wrongness than PM screencapping. It should be banned because it turns the game into a stupid OOC fest and causes arguments like these. Also what Sone and Tyo said.

Also didn't Birdjaguar say he didn't like it?

As the Netherlands, the only thing they realistically would've seen was a country that has been on the borders for decades.

:nope:

That is a very North American thing to do and I can assure you during the times of Nationalism we saw over here during the 19th-early 20th century no one would have just looked on and thought "oh, it's just another country".

No.

It's quite possible (more likely than not if you're a minor nation) that here is a country that wants your guts. For tinsel on the Christmas tree.

There is a reason the Dutch spent so much time attempting to annex Belgium at Vienna. There is a reason the Dutch didn't do anything during WWI when the Germans marched over Dutch territory for a bit and there is a reason the Dutch welcomed the Kaiser after he was exiled.

A general "meh" would be suicidal.

I concur with Sone: only the dishonourable and pitiful would screen cap. Even if we were in character in IOT Chat we may at times be so over the top and too busy having fun that we are not playing the IOT in the chat but rather just having fun. For instance I could be declaring holy wars in the IOT chat, while in the game thread that would not be by interest and not my action.

What is in chat should not reflect the thread. Chat can have its use for talking strategy but even then it is often with relax notions and more important strategy tends to be behind doors anyway. Hence I declare my war plans open in chat as a false alarm to make one act irrationally for instance if such tactics were performed.

Thankfully chat is illegal to screen cap for a IOT game.

Since we've established that IOT Chat is, by nature, OOC, and that screencaps are, by nature, OOC, and that OOC posts in a thread have to avoid mentioning players by name except in a positive light, then we can reach the conclusion that chat screencapping and posting in thread is scummy, meta, and probably illegal within the confines of the IOT Constitution unless the specific IOT has a specific chat dedicated to IC diplomacy.

Just curious. If a player mentions something they say as IC while in chat, what are your opinions on using it?

It's also stupid to completely ignore a legitimate threat from a nearby neighbor. Considering that both AA and I are protestant, and Germany is an enormous blob that has already eaten all the other Germanics, it isn't too far fetched.

The fact that something is stated in the chat doesn't mean you should turn a blind eye to it because people do in fact plan there sometimes and just saying "oh it was an ooc comment in chat I shouldn't do anything about it" is stupid.

And this.

It seems to me like if you have to disregard all ooc said in chat, someone could just start posting their warplans in chat so their enemy would be forced to ignore them.
