IOT: Land Ho!

I am revising the map myself, to try and fix the low quality maps.

Please note that the colors may not be exact, but they're as close as possible to the original.

EDIT: I also NEED to know if Mali is willing to make a color change. our colors are almost if not the same thing.

How about using this base map?

For now I'll just give them a good chunk of Scandinavia, maybe some Northern Europe, and some Mediterranean islands.

That ok, Iceland?

That's fine...

Put my history & info in my OP.

Dawn of a New Age- 1485-1489

Mandatory Listening

The past 500 years have been a time of great turbulence. In the New World, three empires of the Aztec, Tawantinsuyu, and Maya prospered, unaware of the conquerors that were about to set foot on their soil. Although the last of the three was a mere shadow of its former self, it still held considerable power. The Aztec and the Tawantinsuyu, on the other hand, were flourishing, expanding their empires across the breadth of the Americas. In North America, many tribes competed for hegemony, no single tribe achieving it. The nomadic Plains Indians feuded over hunting grounds for buffalo; in the Mississippi River Valley small towns and cities were emerging; and the Cherokee of the Southwest continued their traditional lifestyles. Disunited and blissfully unaware, they were dangerously unprepared for the coming onslaught.

In Western Europe, several dozen wars had left behind a few powerful kingdoms. In Spain, the collapse of the Almohads left the Christian Kingdoms of Iberia feuding amongst each other for the land. Andorra, established in 758 by Charlemagne himself as a buffer against the Moors, had been a state of no significance until this point. But the Hundred Years war saw two important events that would change their fate. The dynastic union of Andorra and Portugal resulted in the formation of a mighty power that conquered Aquitaine from the feuding French and English.

In Spain, over the centuries the Kingdom of Aragon had triumphed over Castille and Leon. The centuries of chaos had resulted in several cries of help to the Pope, who had then established his own fiefdom in south Iberia, an important extension of the Papal state.

The retreat of the Almohads left a power vacuum in North Africa. Taking advantage of this, Andorra-Portugal and Papist Spain expanded their influence into the region, taking most of North Africa from local Berber tribes.

In Gaul, the Hundred Years' War had left a broken France. The chaos allowed the secession of Brittany, which vassaled itself to Andorra-Portugal to protect against French aggression. Burgundy in the southeast now competed with France for hegemony over Gaul.

German affairs, as always, were chaotic. The Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire, characterized by much infighting. The Teutonic Order, which had formed in the Crusades to treat sick German soldiers, had established an independent state along the Baltic. To the east of it lay the decaying Polish-Lithuanian Empire, which the Teutons now eyed with avarice.

To the north of the Holy Roman Empire, the Dutch had taken the chaos in Spain as an opportunity to overthrow their Castillian masters. However, the unification of Spain by Aragon allowed a small part of the 17 provinces to remain in Aragonese control. The future now looks uncertain for the Dutch Republic, as the Aragonese will almost surely attempt to reassert control

South of the Holy Roman Empire lay Austria, which under the eccentric guidance of Archduke Maximilian II had become adopted an exceedingly peculiar brand of syncretic Islam. To their east lay their foes, Hungary. That nation was ruled by the newly crowned Istvan VII, who sought to once again make Europe end the Lord's Prayer with, "Lord save us from the arrows of Hungarians."

In the Balkans and Turkey, several states had risen out of the ashes of the Byzantine Empire. Following the conquest of Constantinople by Ottoman Turks, the Ottoman Empire succumbed to internal divisions, leaving the Balkans to the reemergent powers of Bulgaria and Serbia. Eventually out of the ashes of Turkey rose a Greco-Turkish Union, a confederacy of various feuding Greek and Turkish states in Macedonia and Asia Minor.

Greece proper, meanwhile, has been seized by the expanding Union of Merchant Republics. Based in Southern Italy, this nation had been formed out of a union of Venice and Sicily, eventually bringing into its fold several important merchant republics around the Mediterranean. Also based in the Italian Peninsula, the Papal States had taken on a decidedly militaristic bend, expanding into the Levant, Egypt, and south Spain.

Meanwhile, Russia was divided. The Golden Horde, the remnant of the old Mongol Empire, controlled the steppes of Southern Russia, while its rival Muscovy controlled central Russia. In the north, however, a pagan cult known as Llanfar took control of the old city of Novgorod, renaming it Llanfar after itself and inventing a fictionalized history to justify its actions. Earning the ire of both Christian and Orthodox Europe, this cult achieved remarkable success, establishing a vast empire in the north and calling itself The Benevolent Republic of Holy Llanfar.

The Kalmar Union of Scandinavia collapsed during this time period. In its place rose two states: Denmark-Finland and the Icelandic Empire. The latter, ruled from Reykjavik, established control over the collapsing Norwegian Empire.

In the Middle East, the Pope conquered the Holy Land in the crusades from the collapsing Mameluke dynasty of Egypt. Driven by a vision from God to gain control of the Nile for Christianity, the Pope pressed onward into Egypt, defeating the ageing Mameluke Empire battle after battle. Meanwhile, in Arabia, the Sharif of Hejaz had taken control of nearly the whole of the Arabian Peninsula. He eyed the encroaching Christian armies with hatred, seeking to destroy them and reestablish an Arabian caliphate stretching across the Muslim world. South of Hejaz lay the trading state of Yemen, which sent its merchants as far east as India.

In the Caucasus, the state of Armenia had risen up as great power. South of it, Syria and the Safavid dynasty of Iran vied for control of Mesopotamia. To the north of Iran lay the expanding Uzbek Khanate, which now set its eyes on both Iran and Russia.

In the Indian subcontinent, the decaying Sultanate of Delhi, controlled by the Lodi Dynasty, held most of North India. Meanwhile, in the south, a new power was rising, the Vijayanagara Empire, that sought to expel the Muslim invaders from India.

In the bitter cold Tibetan Plateau, the Tibetan state thrived, ruled by its religious leader, the Dalai Lama.

In Africa, many states competed for dominance. Of particular noteworthiness, the Ghana Empire and the Mali empire had entered a tense standoff of intense economic competition, each wishing to expand their vast trading empire. South of Egypt, Meroe eyed its northern neighbor with greed, hoping to profit of the Pope's destruction of the Mamelukes. South of them lay the various tribes of Ethiopia. Along the east coast of Africa, the Swahili city states established vast trading networks across the Indian Ocean. Despite all this activity on the fringes of Africa, the vast interior remained populated only by feuding Bantu tribes.

So here we find ourselves. The year is now 1489. Only time will tell what the future holds.

Forgot to mention: You have this turn and this turn only to complain if you think a power/ weakness should be changed, for whatever reason. Speak now or forever hold your peace.

What? No. Allow me to explain my comic.

759 - Andorra is created as a buffer state by Charlemagne to fight the Moors.
1279 - Some duke or baron guy in France whose flag is Castile's flipped sideways makes a deal with Castile to give him Andorra and essentially make it a separate nation from Castile.
100 Years War - Andorra and Portugal sneak attack Aquitaine and miraculously win
Time afterwards - somehow gains more of France (I'm still working on that)
More afterwards - take land in North Africa
Now - synonym for "Awesome."

Another rule change guys, sorry. I probably should have decided project costs AFTER the first update, for balance. Anyways, the new project costs are 20/50/80 for America/Asia/Africa

Er, yes, I made some edits. Do you mind that much?

Although I probably would have included the Charlemagne bit if I knew who that was in the cartoon. Sorry :(. Would you like an edit?

Yeah, that'd be nice. Like I said maybe before, up until the Andorra/Portugal marriage alliance/invasion, history is normal.
