Trench Warfare
Trench Warfare was invented to provide additional defence to the new indirect artillery fire that was directed at defenders.

It proved very effective at shielding the troops from barrages and also machine gun fire. Fundamentally, as the range and rate of fire of rifled small arms increased, a defender shielded from enemy fire (in a trench, house window, behind a large rock, or behind other cover) was often able to kill several approaching foes before they closed with his position. This was only made more lethal by the introduction of rapid-firing artillery, exemplified by the "French 75", and high explosive fragmentation rounds. The increases in fire-power had outstripped the ability of infantry to cover the ground between firing lines, and the ability of armour to withstand fire, even for cavalry. It would take a revolution in mobility to change that.

Global
As we approached the new century, the talk of war and now the term genocide entered the vocabulary. An international court of justice was set up to hear charges. The first case was California versus the Hawaiian People. It was quickly discovered that no genocide was found by observers. however doubts remain.

The major alliance of the U.N.A. and L'Accord now hold 7 nations each, which hopefully bestow some sense of peace to the world for the time being. The Accord holding lands in America and the U.N.A. with lands the Europe, the original borders between the alliances look very blurred indeed. Only time will how long this holds.

With the success of the first Olympic Games in Athens the world is looking forward to the next ones in Xi'an and France has agreed to referee the event, this year 1900.

Communism show no signs of dying just yet and is influencing other revolutionary movements around the world.

Europe
A new war looked like starting on the European Continent after many years of peace, between France and Germany. Germany prepared new trench defences and France followed suit. However, it would appear that there was there some corruption in the political ranks with the European Parliament dissolving and independent parliaments being set-up in various former nations. The new French Parliament or Third Republic formed to take over administration in France and it is hoped peace will remain. The new French Republic withdrew its declaration on Germany, but not before control of Iceland and parts of Portugal rioted.

Germany wanting to ensure such an event does not occur again looked to secure some allies with the U.N.A.

Russian attempts to contain the spread of Communism, is still failing. Even a planned attack was confronted by an even stronger defence and subsequent counter-attack.

North America
California's threats of genocide in the world papers on the Hawaiian people have brought shock and fear to the rest of the Californian territories, including California itself. Three islands attempted to rebel, but were deterred by California. A revolt has struck Mexico, probably influenced by the Californian's calls for Genocide and deportation.

Texas show no sign of losing its scientific lead just yet with even more discoveries.

South America
Gran Columbia lost a President because of his poor economic planning and a new ones hopes to run the nation better. Swaziland meanwhile is developing its newly conquered territories.

Africa
A caretaker government was put in charge of Saorise and the rest of Africa was quite peaceful.

Asia
Bacon needs to sliced to be enjoyed said Siam and so it was. Gold has been discovered in Siam as well as Yakutsk.

Severe storms have struck Mongolia, but this has not daunted Xi'an enthusiasm as the host of the 1900 Olympics.

Oceania

GM: Each new city named in CAPS and BOLD in national commentaries will get 10 extra cultural points. This rule will continue as I add more cities to the map.

Russia versus the Polish Rebels

Russia expected the Polish Communists to make good their gains and continue to expand eastwards and prepared a plan called "Operation Mercury" accordingly.

However, they decided to recruit more men to their cause.

Seeing the Russians on the run they decide the time is right to strike both north into lightly defended Livonia and south in the stronger defended Ukraine.

This Communist revolution is getting stronger and stronger.

In July 1898, Sklodowska–Curie and her husband published a paper together, announcing the existence of an element which they named "polonium", in honour of her native Poland, which would for another twenty years remain partitioned among three empires. On 26 December 1898, the Curies announced the existence of a second element, which they named "radium" for its intense radioactivity — a word that they coined.

Disturbed by the events between Germany and France and the recent changes in Government a number of territories are concerned about how they will be administered in a time of crisis in the future.

The city of Oporto in Portugal has rioted and is calling for Portuguese independence.

The Island of Iceland has rioted and is calling for new administrators. As many of their forebears have emigrated to Canada and as that nation is Neutral, they see that as a logical solution to their concerns.

A gold rush has begun in the province of Yakutsk. Fortune seekers from across the world travel there in hopes of getting rich quickly.

Vuelta a Colombia

In Columbia, the Dreyfus Affair was huge news. All the news media covered it in some way, including the sports paper Los Ciclistas 'Leer, a cycling paper. The paper's editor firmly believed Dreyfus to be innocent, while his publisher believed Dreyfus to be a no good dirty traitor. The editor, himself an avid cyclist, challenged the publisher, also a cyclist, to a bicycle race across the country. The winner would be correct in the case of Dreyfus' innocence. The story of the race quickly spread and Los Ciclistas 'Leer's popularity skyrocketed. Soon, many cyclists joined the editor and the publisher on their cross-country trek.

Seeing the potential in such an event, the Minister of Sport Jose Martinez decided to make this race an annual one. He called it the Vuelta a Colombia or Tour de Colombia in French. The race would attempt to follow the editor and the publisher's original path, though varying once in a while. Cyclists of all nations are invited to join Colombia in the Vuelta a Colombias of 1900 through 1904.

Parliamentarians in the Reichstag

Increasingly troubling news from Russia has sparked a furious public debate in Germany. Up until now, the German ruling coalition of liberals, socialists and communists has maintained an officially neutral stance on the Russian civil war. However, as Russia calls for international assistance against the communist rebels, supporters of intervention on the side of both monarchists and the communists are becoming more vocal, and pressure is building on the government to take a firmer stance on the issue.

Most parties affiliated with the National Front, citing reports of atrocities committed by the Soviets, are increasingly fervently arguing in favour of providing assistance to the Russian imperial government. This is equally fervently opposed by the KPD (Communist Party of Germany) and the left faction of the dominant SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany). The more radical members of the KPD are openly advocating providing material assistance to the communists. Chancellor Bebel (SPD) himself is widely thought to be sympathetic to the communists, but for him domestic issues, particularly social reforms and the country's industrialization program, are more important, and he argues against intervention on either side.

In major cities, workers unions and leftist parties, the KPD chief among them, organise "solidarity marches" to show support for the Soviet movement. In response, the nationalist DVNP (German People's Nationalist Party) launched a poster campaign against communism and Soviet violence. Troops on the eastern border with communist-controlled regions of Russia are on high alert, not only for Soviet rebels who might cross the frontier but also for political and ethnic violence in German territory. Relation between ethnic Germans and Poles, accused by German nationalists of working with the Soviets to secede from Germany, is particularly tense.

Due to the burgeoning popularity of the sport of American Football, Australia announced that the first American Football World Cup would be held in Perth in July and August 1902. Commentary
Investigative journalists have unearthed normally secret diplomatic negotiations, between France and Bosnia. These will have severe repercussions for the nations involved as well as territories. All the territories are now beginning to riot and rebel, making any movements and transports impossible.

GM: The territories of Greece, Libya, Turkey, Caucasus and Central Asia are now immune from any actions until I work out what I have planned to do with them.
