That is formal (forget the baseball cap) while not being pretentious (not wearing a beret) at the same time? I have a round face if that helps.

Not that i would be rushing to post it, but after noticing your first tag i now see even less of a reason to do so ;)

As for other types of hats, why not go the Hermes way?

His hat, called Petasos, also featured wings.

Apparently it was a popular hat in Thessaly (without the wings, sadly).

I will just advise against a hat full stop. Unless you're clearly good looking, in that case anything will work.

I would guess that if a hat has it's own name, wings or not, it would be considered pretentious. Unless its name was Joe, of course.

As a serious suggestion, what about a flat cap? Though depending on where you are it might make you look older than needed.

Also can't go wrong with a plate amor helmet.

Any special occasion or just to wear?

Yeah. You said it's formal, so I assume you'll be wearing a suit or something, in which case I would strongly recommend you don't wear any hat at all.

Maybe in Texas.

Go with the Joe Friday hat:

Too euphoric.

Now. That's what I call a hat..
The definition of pretentious.

Yeah, that could work. I'll have to try it out in front of a mirror first.

Just to wear when it's raining or snowing, to pair with a non-casual (read: no hood) jacket.

I have this. I get a lot of compliments.
Ehh...I don't know. I'd probably want to avoid hats with rims altogether.

I think a flat cap might fit the bill. Traditional enough that it can work as formal-ish wear, understated enough that it's not pretentious. Doesn't look like you're trying too hard, but doesn't look like you're not even trying.
