Is this the next big one?!

our Taoiseach [pronounced Thee-shuck] (parliamentary leader) Bertie Ahern, says it probably will be the next World War.

The only way I see Israel attacking Syria is if rockets begin to be fired from Syrian territory. If that were to happen, Israeli attacks would only strengthen the Assad regime, not make it collapse. The situation in Syria is very different from Lebanon. In Syria you have a strong central government, in Lebanon you have a very weak, impotent government that is suffered to live by Hezbollah, the real power in Lebanon.

I guess it all depends on the syrians themselves. I was under the impression that the Assad regime was losing support among syrians, especially after the failure to reform after the 'damascus spring'. I see that the syrian ex-pat community is working hard to inform thier country-folk of the 'real' news, and a crack in the Ba'ath facade could turn into a fissure. Keep in mind that the current assad is still pretty new on the job, and he doesn't really have the option to really crack down on people if things get out of hand, given what happened to a similar dictator next door.Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I don't think that a war with israel would really galvanize the nation, I think it would just bring to light the weakness of the current government.
