Well, I still need to do the whole Sparta thing before I get to you, so you still have time to sacrifice a few chickens...

Aww, fine. I got blood all over my keyboard?

Stop typing like that! For the record, I'm going to sleep. Frankly, iggy's typing scares me :(

Update 11: Bronze and Iron

1000-900 BC

Atyria, as usual, is at peace. Spurred on by the Roman breakthrough, much funding is poured into learning how to work and mine iron, although the research has not yet borne fruit.

Two more Atyrian cities arise this turn. In the northeast is Guitar, the city of cattle, which is not much of a city, notable only for its large cattle market. In the far west is Violin, where the navy has relocated its shipyards due to the growing commercial demand for the harbor in Atyrian. Merchants have high hopes about Violin becoming a center of trade, but thus far it is attractive only within Atyria, having done nothing to make it a destination for foreign merchants instead of Atyrian or Eregli.

The Atyrian cities are certainly unique (+1 culture), their specialization causing the best of every field to flock from around the Mediterranean to "their" city. Although every city is completely different, most are thriving.

-------------------------------------------------------

Carthage has finally become a republic, and after a few initial problems when some generals refused to give up power (-500 Spearmen, -200 UU), this yields immediate results (+1 infrastructure, +2 confidence, +2 culture). The people rejoice, as they are finally granted a say in their government, hopefully preventing the stupidity of the Monarchy Era. Carthage is now the second republic in the area, and it is unknown whether this will help, or hinder, relations with Rome.

Carthage also pursues colonial ventures, founding the city of Winair to the east of Tartessos' African colony. With the government encouraging them, people flock to the new city, and it quickly becomes a center of trade (+1 trade economy). The trade route from Tartessos to Syracuse has now split into two distinct parts: the Northern Route runs through the Syracusan colonies in Iberia, the Balearics, and Sardinia, while the Southern Route stops in Winair, Cirta, and Carthage. Hearing of the newfound riches gained from trade, barbarian tribes have begun raiding the northern African coast (-400 Spearmen).

Syracuse, meanwhile, does very little, except for conquering the whole of Sardinia (-1500 Spearmen, -200 Archers).

Rome begins to sell their iron technology, making large amounts of money when Sparta and the Sea Peoples pay significant portions of their treasury to learn the secrets of smelting. Iron turns out to be plentiful in the League's territory, but there is very little iron to be found in Sparta, and the Romans are able to make even more profit by trading iron for Spartan goods (+1 trade economy).

Another advantage of iron is that it makes swords easily available, whereas they had been rare before, as bronze was not strong enough to make blades of any great length. The Romans are thus the first nation in the world to have a force of actual swordsmen. The Romans soon raise a massive army, which would have been expensive to maintain in the age of bronze.

The Roman army is also reformed, with legions adopting a four-level formation. At the front are skirmishers with light armor and spears, followed by Hastati with swords, body armor, and rectangular shields. Behind them are the Princepes, experienced troops with superior equipment, and behind them are the Triarii, heavy spearmen who are the last line of defense against the enemy.

Although the Roman command underestimates the amount of troops they can raise and only assigns a small part of them to campaigning in the south, the numbers are more than ample, as many tribes, terrified of the iron weapons, simply surrender (-1500 Swordsmen, -700 Spearmen, -300 Archers). Rome soon has a border with Syracuse.

-------------------------------------------------------

As Eirehann's population increases because of their encouraging of child rearing, secondary cities are formed: Doolish on the Isle of Man (+mod annoyance in having to place a city there) and Galway, on the Shannon estuary on the west coast of Ireland (+Urban economy). Eirehann also begins to rebuild their small military.

The ships of Eirehann explore throughout the century. They sail to the east, where they visit Konigsburg and meet with the Prussian king. The sail to the north, charting two small islands to the northeast and northwest of Britannia, but only open sea beyond. But most importantly, they sail south--and encounter a larger fleet sailing north to raid Brittania.

The Britannians have been focusing on local issues, building roads and schools and beginning to reform the local councils in the countryside to gain more income from them. But they are also constantly on guard against further raids, and increase their navy still further.

So when notified by Eirehann of the force approaching their lands, they send the entire navy. This turns out to be major overkill, as the allied force of nearly 80 ships meets a small 20-ship fleet and crushes them (Eirehann: -1 Galley, Brittania: -20 Galleys, Normandy: -20 Galleys). When the enemy flagship is captured, the admiral, from the small nation of Normandy, begs for mercy, saying that Maar made them do it.

Maar had, indeed, made them do it. Besides starting to push inland (-500 Spearmen), Maar set up a colony far to their north in Normandy, where they had based their raids previously (10 galleys, 500 spearmen from Maar to Normandy), and ordered it to continue raiding the Britannian trade routes.

The Britannians are shocked, for several weeks previously they had welcomed a delegation from Maar, and began discussing trade relations, perhaps even restarting the old Tin Route. But they are appalled that Maar would be vile enough to offer trade and raid them at the same time. The delegation is promptly executed and their ships are destroyed (Maar: -5 galleys). Will this be all, or is an invasion in order?

-------------------------------------------------------

Srivijaya continues to prosper under the rule of their kind and active king (+1 confidence, +1 culture), and this has allowed them to expand greatly to the north with little casualties(-200 spearmen), as tribes overthrow their chieftains and join the Srivijayans, who are now beginning to build schools for their people.

Srivijaya is currently almost exclusively Jatist, but this does not stop the King from being interested in other religions. There are whispers of a different religion, Hinduism, similar and yet different from Jatism, far to the north and west. Perhaps a naval voyage could be organized?

-------------------------------------------------------

Both on land and on sea, Prussia continues its fight against the Danes. Utilizing both frontal assaults and amphibious landings, Prussia manages to encircle the bulk of the Danish forces and destroy them (-1500 UU, -1000 Spearmen, -800 Archers, -5 Galleys). The northern part of the peninsula is now in Prussian control.

In addition, a naval base is established on a nearby island for use in supplying the invasion, and rapidly becomes a destination in itself, becoming the city of Copenhagen.

Noricum, meanwhile, founds the city of Ostrava in the south.

-------------------------------------------------------

The League of Sea Peoples acquires iron technology from the Romans. As a result, they are able to build nearly twice as many ships as expected. The League also buys a breeding population of horses from the Hedjaz.

As more merchants prefer the southern trade route across the Fertile Crescent, Tyre--and the League--prospers (+1 trade economy).

The Grecian colony continues to be raided by barbarians, and the garrison there is overwhelmed, except along the coast (-300 Spearmen).

To the south, Egypt finishes rebuilding Memphis, and New Memphis becomes a symbol of Egyptian culture and power (+Egypt cultural center).

Besides taking the League colony, Sparta, too, buys iron technology from Rome (and iron as well, since there is no iron to be found in the country). Copying the Romans, the Spartans recruit swordsmen as well. But a Spartan scientist has an interesting idea--the catapult--and the Spartans become the first nation to have specialized siege weapons besides rams.

The Spartan generals are not foolish, and they know that Athens will not fall if it can be supplied by sea. However, they are facing a much larger, much more experienced navy. And worse, initial attempts to choose the place of battle are unsuccessful, as the Byzantines, being on the defensive, will not engage unless attacked. However, the Spartans begin raiding individual ships (Byzantium: -5 galleys), and are able to force the Byzantines to attack them in the strait between Euboea and mainland Greece. In such narrow surroundings, the ships cannot maneuver well, and Byzantine catapults are able to decimate them (Byzantium: -10 Galleys) before they can close with the Spartan galleys. At first, it seems like a rout--a massive hole opens up in the Spartan line, and the Byzantines pour through. But it was a trap, and forces waiting in reserve are able to crush them. The Byzantines to not fall for the same mistake again, and continue fighting, inflicting large casualties on the Spartans--but instead of breaking, the Spartans attack in force . It becomes clear that the Spartans are willing to fight to the death, and fight they do. At the end of the day, both fleets are all but destroyed (Both: -45 Galleys).

With the fleet out of the way, the Spartans attack. Much more numerous, they destroy the Byzantine army there (Byzantines: -1000 Spearmen, -300 UU, -300 Archers, Sparta: -2000 Spearmen, -200 Archers, -200 Swordsmen). They then batter the walls down with catapults, and take the city. Sparta has reclaimed Athens--but can they hope to reach Byzantium, or even Euboea?

-------------------------------------------------------

Iberia builds some roads. That's about it.

-------------------------------------------------------

Ur and Medea both claim victory in the war, and in their propaganda (both: +1 confidence). The Medes grow increasingly determined to end this war (+1 culture).

Of course, the propaganda war is not nearly as important as the real war. Both sides had grand plans--the Medes were convinced they would take Ur, the Urrians that they would drive the Medes out of their lands. Ironically, both of their predictions were largely right. But we'll get to that later. First, we should note that the Medean river boats were destroyed by Ur's more numerous river boats, not that it would matter (Medes: -20 river boats, Ur: -25 river boats).

There were five main armies involved in the war, besides the various defense corps: the Medean army in the northwest, the Dilmunese expeditionary force, the force of Hittite volunteers in the west, the Urrian army at Ur, and the Medean army between the rivers and east of the delta. Let's follow them in that order.

At the earliest opportunity, a large force left Agbatana and cut through the northern barbarians toward the Black Sea. The local tribes quickly learned not to bother them (-200 UU, -600 Spearmen, -100 volunteers). Upon arriving at the Black Sea, they raced south, taking the Euphrates fortifications from behind. They didn't need to worry, for the entire Hittite-Urrian force had departed eastward. Soon, all of the West was in their hands (-500 UU, -500 Spearmen, -300 volunteers, 1 spending point from Ur to Medes, 1 trade economy from Ur to Medes)...

The Dilmunese expeditionary force was tasked with sailing along the coast and destroying any shipyards they found. They certainly found them. Of course, they also found half of the Medean army. (-Dilmunese Expeditionary force (30 Galleys, 1500 Spearmen, and 300 Archers), Medes: -600 Volunteers, -700 UU, -200 Archers, -100 Chariots, -400 Spearmen).

Meanwhile, the 1st Urrian army, as well as the Hittite volunteers, was striking south between the rivers. Although it was supposed to be a distraction, it was having surprising success. At the same time, the 2nd Urrian army, after waiting as long as it could for the Dilmunese force to arrive, headed north from Ur. The Medean forces were caught in a pincer and destroyed, and Ur had taken the land between the river (Medes: -400 Volunteers Ur: -200 UU, 300 Hittite Spearmen). Only upon counting the bodies did the total seem too small--but by then the plume of smoke was rising in the distance.

The Medean force, led by Iaxeres II himself, had mostly evacuated across the Tigris, which they still controlled. Then, they had boarded the boats being constructed in the south, and landed just south of Ur. The small garisson was quickly overwhelmed (Ur: -250 Spearmen, -200 Axemen, -300 Archers Medes: -400 Volunteers, -1000 Spearmen, -1000 UU), and the city walls were breached. Ur fell, although Iaxeres II was killed leading the assault against the palace. Andisallamash V was executed, and Ur burned (Ur: -1 trade economy Medes: +2 spending points).

Then the Medes left as quickly as possible, for they were massively outnumbered. Barely staying ahead of the advancing Urrian forces, they joined with the force which had invaded New Armenia (-700 UU). Ur proceeded to take the rest of its lands.

The Medes now have the economic power, but Ur still has a massive force. Will Agtabana, too, burn?

-------------------------------------------------------

The people of Yamato are emboldened by their victory (+1 culture, +1 confidence)--even more so when ninja succeed in killing the Toyama leader and best general.

The Toyama heir is a 6-year-old prone to temper tantrums. He orders the "Yamato meanies" to be crushed with all of their force. At first, it seems as if the plan is working, as the Yamato rout, but as they are pursued into the mountains, they suddenly turn and fight, while Samurai attack from all sides. The Toyama army is crushed (Toyama: -3000 Spearmen, Yamato: -400 Spearmen, -1100 Samurai). Kibi is then able to invade Toyama and sack the capital (1 spending point from Toyama to Kibi).

Meanwhile, Izumo allies with Hi to destroy Chikushi.

-------------------------------------------------------

A new regime has arisen in Magan, which is worrying news to Dilmun. Magan begins training elite axemen as marines, extremely skilled in hand-to-hand combat. They also found a city on Socotra, but maintaining it will be hard, as fierce resistance combined with the extreme distance means it will have to be very highly garrisoned (-800 Spearmen, -500 UU, -200 Archers).

Magan has also begun a long-term project to dominate all of Arabia.

Rants from the Mod (OOC)

Byzantium and Syracuse are now up for grabs.

It seems that I need to add more levels for Confidence and Culture. I'll do that at some point before the next update.

Luckymoose, I decreased the Infrastructure benefits from your project because you gained in size since the project was started, so the levels were worth more.

Sorry for the quality in the Sparta-Byzantium war. I don't do naval battles well.

Swissempire, I refuse to name your city Chiptopia. Come up with a more appropriate name.

Scapegoats-for-the-turn: Iggy and Kal'thzar. I bet you can figure out why...

Best orders: Darkening and TerrisH

Deadline is Sunday.

Stats are up.

Yeesh! Will this war ever end?
That's it? No "YES, I SACKED UR!!!!"? No "woohoo, I have twice their economy now?"

:p

To: Ur
From: Medea

Surrender now. The war is now unwinnable. All you can do now is bring more suffering upon your people.

Should you surrender, you shall be granted the same rights and freedoms as every Medean citizen, like the Babylonians, Elamites and Hittites before you.

We shall also rebuild the city of Ur to its once great stature.

It is your choice, people of Ur. Let the people of Mesopotamia be united in a great empire, or be, regrettably, crushed.

OOC:
That's it? No "YES, I SACKED UR!!!!"? No "woohoo, I have twice their economy now?"
It's something I didn't plan to dance around about. It's a quiet joy.

@Iggy: Loud insanity and quiet joy? I'd prefer the other way around. :p

to British isles nations:
What? You have killed our people for words of barbarians from Gaul?! Fine than. Let them raid you as you wish. We will trade with others. Fools.
