Japan - Hojo Tokimune Thread

From responses so far I think people will pay for a DLC that _removes_ Ghandi from the game.

I don't think it's strong evidence. The only instance where people might be driven to buy an alternate leader is Egypt so far. TR, Hojo, and Qin seem to please the fans.

Don't get me wrong, I like the new leaders too. I'm sure they are choosing interesting agendas and big personalities, which is great. Extra leader DLC is just baseless speculation at this point, although the more I think about it, the more everything seems to be "in place" for this to happen.

The alternate reason for having Leader Uniques is that it makes it easier for modders to add alternate leaders. I am suspecting more and more that it is part of their "more modability" tenet.

Both for modders and for possible official DLC including alternate leaders. Seems like a win-win situation to me.

Also makes it possible for alternate leaders to appear in expansion packs, like in Civ4.

Kinda fussed it's not Meiji Emperor, but otherwise I like Tokimune, not a recycled choice and a person I could actually learn more about.

Agreed - would've preferred a slightly more modern Japanese leader but this guy should be interesting nonetheless.

Also, based on his historical 'credentials', I would expect we'll be seeing the Mongols either in base Civ VI or in one of the first few DLCs.

How many civs had alternate leaders in Civ 4 vanilla?

Here's the thing. There are a finite number of leaders/civs they will produce over the life of the game.

I'd rather have 48 civs with 1 leader than 24 civs each with 2 leaders or even 36 civs with some civs having 2.

New leaders would be great and very cool but I'd rather have modders carry that torch I think.

From memory: England, America, Mongols, China, Russia, Germany, France

Great "alternative" choice for Japan, even if I would have liked Meiji better. I am thoroughtfully expecting a DLC gallore of alternative leaders, thought

A quick overview of his historical achievements:
- refused to become a vassal of the Mongol empire
- fought off 2 Mongol invasions
- built fortifications along western Japan, including a seawall
- applied the precepts of Zen Buddhism to the martial arts
- sought to spread Zen Buddhism by building temples (eg Engakuji Temple at Kamakura)

Thanks! Seems like a lot of potential there. Look forward to hearing about his uniques.

I hope they don't go Civ V Ethiopia with their UA, im thinking he will probably have a good religious boost of some kind I suspect. otherwise pretty awesome, nothing makes a Civ game feel even newer than different leaders. really hope they continue this and use as few returning leaders as possible. (Gandhi) its too late for India.

Same here. I would like to see as many fresh new faces, and as a result twists from the normal expected play style for each Civilization. Question is, who would you replace Gandhi with?

I am pretty tired of seeing Gandhi, and tired of the nuke happy jokes. We get it, it's ironic.

Civ4 had Ashoka as alternate leader.

Personally, I'd like to see Chandragupta Maurya. Given that he actually conquered the majority of the subcontinent, he'd be a fairly fitting leader representing India as a whole.

This is all speculation but I'd say that if they released alternate leaders as DLC that kills 2 birds because DLC by definition would pay for its own production, if sold well. So you're not stealing away resources, it should be cost agnostic or ideally an addition to resources. We should still get expansions with new Civs but new leaders in between as DLC.

I know that's not confirmed but I think that'd be the ideal
Middle ground between new leaders vs new civs
