And if I had to think about it...if i was in a fight with someone and I didn't wanna kill them I would stop beating them long before they went unconscious...perhaps when they fell on the ground. the point is how badly he was hurt doesn't matter. See a picture of the kid? He was so badly swollen he must of taken tons of hits to the head. He could have died, just got lucky. Anyway, I await the courts decision. Hopefully justice will be handed down. They probably have better access to the facts than any of us.

HE could have died but was that the intent of the attackers? That is what guides the charges, not what you want the penalty to be. if the kid had died they would be charged with manslaughter, because of the circumstances and frame of mind of the kids.

but what do you base that opinion of intent on? the fact he was knocked unconscious? as i stated being knocked unconscious alone doesn't imply intent. again, if they wanted to kill the kid, they had more than enough opportunity to do so.

Anyway, I would be in favor of charging them with assault. And the legal age of adulthood in Louisiana is 17 so i think some of them were adults. One is being charged as a minor (i think more than 1 now). I was just arguing that the charges weren't ridiculous and probably not fueled by racism. I just don't agree with the protesters calling for no prosecution of the Jena 6.

Assault and battery is the harshest charge they should receive. Charging them with attempted murder is absurd. They committed a crime, but so did the people who hung up those ropes...inciting violence (and with great effect). My solution:

Give everyone involved a six month sentence and then some probation (except the minors who should be given probation). Add to the sentence of the one guy with a criminal record whatever additional time is normal for repeat offenders, as well. If any of these people are actually tried for attempted murder, there is a huge problem with the local judicial system. If any are found guilty, the federal government needs to do something about it.

Well I haven't kept up with the thread, so I don't know. But on local news stations I've heard people say that only the black students should be prosecuted. Yeah, I couldn't believe it.

Both were potentially hate crimes. It is difficult to tell with the black guys though. I know plenty of white guys that would jump other white guys if they did something so incredibly offensive. The retaliation wasn't necessarily a hate act.
