JF01- Whip Frenzy (Open SG)

War is finished: I made a peace deal for some techs/cash and gave "whatever his name" Mathematics in return. I want them to research some stuff for us too. They probably will aim for MM or Construction next.

Yeah, the Lit debacle. The way I see it, it's like if we had a mini-GL for one turn. If we were to build the GL, no doubt we would get Chivalry out of it and we wouldn't have traded for it.

Ah yes, one must be very careful with what tech to choose when Philosophy arrives. Been there, done that. At least it wasn't, say, Ceremonial Burial. A self-imposed penalty might be to gift it to everyone we meet, gaining nothing from it.

Yeah, the Lit debacle.
Okay, but what would you have done if you had popped Literature from a Goody Hut?

Same idea; it wasn't learned, it was gifted. Since no beakers were ever allocated to Literature the in-game rules were not broken. Bent, maybe, but not broken.

Same would be true with The Theory of Evolution, too.

Well the problem with getting Lit ourselves is, that there would be a good chance we won't see it until the middle MA, making the GLib worthless.

Therefore I propose:
Trade it to everyone on first sight.
No building of the GLib ourselves.

our Pottery detour was threatening to ruin any kind of slingshot.

Nah, with high commerce, high food land as we have, the slingshot is a given on Emperor, with or without Alpha tribes, and particularly since we weren't shooting for Republic, so didn't need CoL first.

Not a criticism, just an observation.

I just waned to be absolutely sure we would get a free tech and going for masonry, math first would've been nerve wracking. Getting MM as my free tech also wasn't much of a plus.

No building of the GLib ourselves.

This is probably a given anyway. At the pace we want to get to Communism (ASAP) I very much doubt of its usefullness. We haven't met anyone overseas either yet, so the time we actually send a few galleys that find land (we can't rush them with money, remember...) it might very well be already on the point of obsolescence.

I am getting ready to play a set, so do you want me to gift lit to everyone we meet? Or are we okay with keeping it since we invested no actual beakers? In Ragnar for Secretary-General we could get freebies from the GLib and the ToE as long as we did no actual research.

Played to 1000BC. We are at war with Persia and Iroquois, who are also at war with each other. They demanded Literature.... We have met Germany and America, they are both up CoL, MM, Polytheism and down Literature. If we are allowed to trade that, the next turns could be good for trading with Currency in 3 turns. I settled Kohlapur, Jaipur, and Karachi. The Furs and Iron are hooked up. I left the MMing for the next player.

Finally played my set. I got us into the Middle Ages, got contact with everyone and we are now at peace. Some pointers for the next players:

a) Almost everybody hates our guts. I had to wage war against the Americans and Germans at the same time, due to them dropping settler pairs on our land (they were in galley range). The Germans founded a town. I waited for it not to auto-raze and took it. Our little peninsula is completly colonized, with America, Byz and Maya taking a small piece of it.

b) We have a monopoly on Feud and are in Feud.

c) War with the Iroquois is almost inevitable at this point. They got the best land and the most space. The other continent is way overcrowded. We have some MI/horsemen, but very little artillery.

d) Since we might want a diplo victory, please refrain from razing unless absolutely necessary.

I set research to Theology. We should beeline to Education to be able to trade for Chivalry and Engineering. I sense that we should shut down research afterwards, trigger our GA, and go after our neighbours. There's a settler to claim the last piece of land (near the fish Northeast of our territory). FP is not built since we can build it with a MGL in the outlying layers of the Iroquois core later on.

Have fun !

PS: Since we are religious, building temples/caths is a pretty good option in our core. We are using specialists and 20% slider right now. It will also lessen flip risks.

Just in case this is not dead, I played a few turns.

PRE:
Not sure I have all the rules down, but I am sure we are not allowed to research optional techs. So I switch to Theology. Normally I would be inclined to go for Engineering. This is because so early in the game I cannot afford to make universities anyway. I also want those bridges.

In this game that is a little less valuable, because towns are 4 tile apart. That means 1 move units will not get to the next town in one turn anyway.

The first thing I was wondering about is why the land where Smoke settled was not filled, you have 3 cows? You did not make a lot of towns as the spacing is a bit wide, so it should not have been hard to get one more settler out?

13 workers and 2 slaves and 15 towns with extra space, seems very light. Why are 2 working a mountain on the farthest part of the empire? Why a mine going up in a rioting town on the border of the land?

Why is that town, Bengal making a barracks, is this to be an AW game? Doubt we need a barrack here otherwise or even if it was AW.

We have a BG being worked in that town with no road, better than a mine right now.

I hate to see 11 warriors in an emperor game with only 15 towns. I need to look up Feudalism to see what the value, if any of MP's are. No experience at all with this form of government. I know the game variant requires it, so no sweat, just no experience.

I seem to remember a post about war coming soon with Hiawatha, so maybe we could use more than 3 cats.

Too bad Delhi was not founded north 1 tile. Then the BG tile would be available and one more town could have been put down on the river south of it.

I see a warrior is being made in Dacca. It has no barrack either. Archer going up in Lahore, yuk, not fond of making archer. I will in a bind, but we have other choices.

The extra space means a lot more workers are needed and a lot of tiles are without a single improvement. We have gobs of trees still that could help speed some builds.

The good news it is only Emperor. Two towns are not on the grid. If we are so sure Hiawatha is going to come for us and IF we want that, why not plant the town on the river right on his border? Better site and we will have to take down Mauch Chunk anyway.

I know there was talk about not razing, not sure why that was a concern. I don't think it affects rep only attitude. I think it is too late to worry about attitude. In any event, you can abandon it.

I guess it does not matter as we will want to make a settler to fill that spot and we can have both.

Stop slave irrigating plains in Bombay. It has plenty of food at +6. It has irrigated tiles not even being worked right now. Switch market to temple. We get nothing out of a market right now.

We have one lux and run with 10% tax. Will pop out workers and maybe a settler here. A granary here would have been good. I see Calcutta has one, but it is not going to really get much use from it. It has +3 food.

Feudal means we get less support from cities than from towns.

I send the slave to start a road to the new site.
Hyderabad switch galley to worker. What was the galley to be used for, no need to scout. We have met all the nations. Not going to be invading I would not think. I would not want to start a war with Byz as Dromons will be a hassle.

We have plenty to do on this land for some time to come.

Dacca switch to wealth, no need for yet another 3/3 warrior. What we need is a road.

Heidelburg switch spear, no barracks, to cats.
Jaipur switch horse to temple. We will not have a second lux for a long time. I would consider selling the barracks here as well.

Bengal I send the horse from Jaipur to it and the horse near Jaipur into replace it.
Lahore switch archer to temple.

Chittagong switch MDI to cat. Just cannot make 3/3 MDI's. Lets make them someplace else.

Delhi does need a barracks, but switch to temple first. It is +7 food and will grow fast, too fast to pop out workers and settlers.

Karachi switch horse to pike. If we are attacked, by MW's, I want a few defenders. We have 1 pike and 2 spears.

I am glad to see the low count of defenders, but once I have pikes I want some of them. Only 1 spear is a vet and it is elite, so no upgrades. We do not have any money anyway.

I stop the worker and slave next to Kolhapur as it is +3 food at size 5, with 13 food. No need to push it to grow faster and get past town size. At least not right now.

310BC:
Not sure if Sun Tzu is a real option, but I started it. Need to mine the cow in Delhi to get additional shields.

Played to 50BC, all turns peaceful.

We have a monopoly on theology. Researching education now. Persia has chivalry and will trade it for theology. That of course gives us access to jumbos.

I replaced a lot of irrigation with mines in Bombay to make it a 20 spt city. It is finishing work on a market, and then can build decent military units. Sun's is a ways off still. Iroquois finished ToA in Salamanca.

I followed up military builds to bump up the cat count to 11. There is now a very modest military presence on the Iroquois border. Next up will probably want a few more units before kicking off a war and the GA of course with a couple elephants.

A reminder of the rules:

No optional techs to be researched.

Only pop-rushing govts allowed. (Despotism; Feudalism; Communism; Fascism.)

VC to be SS or Diplo.

And, no turnlogs.

I would suggest long-term planning for a Communist govt when deciding on city placement.

Hard to plan for Communism, when you are not allowed to research it and have to get it from someone.

Hard to plan for Communism, when you are not allowed to research it and have to get it from someone.

The AI will research it in preference to any other techs (along with Fascism) so it would be easy to trade for, and of the three govts available Commie wins hands-down IMO.

By planning for, I mean that greater thought should be given to the placing of new cities, which although corrupt now, will one day stand on their own as decent cities. It would also require giving thought to builds (CHs are a must).

Also, with Diplo one of the prefered VCs, I would suggest a slightly more peaceful approach, certainly capturing rather than razing.

I can usually get Communism for Scientific Method, even after building the TOE.

I though planning was exactly what JF was against. It was to be a seat of the pants affair. That sort of implies no diplo to me, as that should involve some planning. I say never give peace a chance. Just stealing John's line and inverting it. :D
