JJ03-Monarch, Just Win

yeah, but we can't build wells yet, however we do have uranium, and we can build battleships with uranium. We can also get oil from saladin.

Preturn check (1770 AD)
Drop Research to 0% to get cash for unit upgrades.

Switch builds in Berlin and Munich to Infantry. We need units fast!

Decide not to revolt to Nationhood yet because we need to upgrade units first.

Qin has only one source of Oil (near Guangzhou). I'll see if I can spare some troops to pillage it. Maybe Saladin will do it for us.

We could use a few units with the Medic I promotion.

I guess that's about all that I can do for now...

IBT:
Qin assaults Satsuma:
While defending, German Infantry (20.0/20) repulses Chinese Cannon (Cannon withdraws.)
While defending, German Infantry defeats (10.40/20): Chinese Grenadier
The rest of Qin's offensive is vulnerable to counter attack now. His Cavalry units start a pillaging spree.

At Osaka, Qin counter attackw with a single Cannon:
While defending, German Grenadier(5.3/12) repulses Chinese Cannon (Cannon withdraws.)

Turn 1: (1772 AD)
Our Cavalry unit in Osaka knocks off the offending Chinese Cannon:
Cavalry defeats (10.80/15): Chinese Cannon

At Satsuma, a couple of Chinese Catapult are destroyed:
Cavalry defeats (14.40/15): Chinese Catapult
Musketman defeats (7.65/9): Chinese Catapult

Saladin dropped off some units (a few Cav, and Infantry and a Cannon) outside of Hangzhou. We'll see what happens.

IBT:
Qin counterattacks at Osaka:
Grenadier defeats (5.28/12): Chinese Cannon
Cavalry loses to: Chinese Cavalry (9.30/15)

Turn 2: (1774 AD)
Counterattacking units at Osaka are wiped out:
Cannon defeats (6.96/12): Chinese Cavalry
Cavalry defeats (11.55/15): Chinese Cavalry
We still don't have a Medic there.

At Satsuma Qin's invasion force is put down:
Cavalry defeats (14.40/15): Chinese Catapult
Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Chinese Cannon

We also destroy one of the pillaging Cavalry, but at the cost of an Infantry (he had 73%+ odds too!) :(
Infantry loses to: Chinese Cavalry (1.80/15)
Rifleman defeats (14.00/14): Chinese Cavalry

I move an Ironclad into Huayna's territory to spy on Macau. Qin has Transports there, but not troops ready for embarkation. Good!

IBT: No counterattack at Osaka! Hooray! Saladin must be keeping Qin busy! The Power graph shows:

Yep. Looks like Saladin is pushing fatso around a little. :)

Turn 3: (1776 AD)
Upgrade a few more units.
Berlin completes Infantry --> Infantry (2)

IBT:
Another lame counterattack at Osaka:
Infantry defeats (14.00/20): Chinese Cannon

Turn 4: (1778 AD)
Return Research to 50%. Industrialism in 17.

The last pillaging Cavalry in our homeland is dispatched, but we lose another Infantryman (at ~ 69% odds) :aargh:
Infantry loses to: Chinese Cavalry (11.85/15)
Cavalry defeats (12.15/15): Chinese Cavalry

IBT: No counterattack

Turn 5: (1780 AD)
Berlin finishes: Infantry --> Factory (4)
Osaka suppresses it's rebellion and rejoins the German Empire.
Osaka's borders expand +40% Whew! The defenders get a break!
Osaka begins: Theater (15)

Turn 6: (1782 AD)
Kyoto finishes: Infantry --> Barracks (5)
Edo finishes: Infantry --> Barracks (4)

Elizabeth finishes: Statue of Liberty

Turn 7: (1784 AD)
Hamburg finishes: Infantry --> Infantry (9)
Munich finishes: Infantry --> Buddhist Temple (3) Unhappiness here.

Turn 8: (1786 AD)
Libyan finishes: Machine Gun --> Forge (5)

Turn 9: (1788 AD)
Berlin finishes: Factory --> Aqueduct (1)
Frankfurt finishes: Observatory --> Grocer (15)

[/b]IBT:[/b]
After a long hiatus, Qin mounts another counterattack at Osaka (check out this unit selection!)
Infantry defeats (20.00/20): Chinese Cannon
Infantry defeats (13.40/20): Chinese Cannon
Infantry defeats (18.20/20): Chinese Cho-Ko-Nu
Infantry defeats (16.40/20): Chinese Cho-Ko-Nu
Osaka now has a few CDII Infantry and seems secure.

Turn 10: (1790 AD)
Berlin finishes: Aqueduct --> Infantry (3)
Munich finishes: Buddhist Temple --> Cavalry (4)
Cologne finishes: Factory --> Infantry (7)
Edo finishes: Barracks --> Cavalry (7) (I think I put a Cav. in the queue, but I'm not sure.)

I put an Archer in a Galleon and sent it with a Frigate escort over to the Chinese coast near Huangzhou. I recommend dropping him off in one of the near by forest to give us a view of the defenders there. He'll die, but he wasn't doing us much good where he was! :)

Qin appears to be spent. I recommend that we keep cranking out the Infantry and keep the war going, at least Qin and Saladin sign a Peace Treaty. Taking a few citis off Qin would be a good thing!

There is a Grenadier in a Forest outside of Osaka. Leave him there! He is guarding access to the Worker to the SE that is building a railroad to the city.

In the end, I did not switch any of our civics. I thought it best to stay with Free Religion for the 10% science boost and with Free Speech for the $$ and culture bonus.

Huayna has Industrialism now. In the end, he may be the AI to watch.

Sorry, I'm going to need a skip. My relatives are coming and I really can hardly be on the forums, much less actually play until at least Monday. That puts ngraner up.

Yep. "Kick 'em while they're down" is what I always say, :D at least until War Weariness starts to become overwhelming. I am very anxious to see what kind of forces Qin has in Huangzhou.

If Qin discoveres Industrialism, don't forget to pillage his Oil ASAP (I didn't think that I could spare the units from the defense of Osaka to do it.) We don't want to have to deal with any Chinese Tanks if we can help it.

Good Luck!

Prosecuted the war against Qin, taking Hangzhou. We are currently facing strong war weariness requiring 40% culture to suppress.

I stopped 1 turn short because we face a key decision. Qin has an invasion force of 4 Cavalry and 4 Cannon that will land next turn. We can probably deal with it, but they will probably pillage our towns something awful. We are in position to take Guangzhou, but the defenders are 2 double upgraded city defenders and a machine gun. I have only pillaged one town around that square. Qin will not give us Combustion for peace.

Options:

1. Pillage what we can with our Cavalry and then get what we can for peace.

2. Let Qin land then take Guangzhou next turn (not a sure thing by any means), then sue for peace. An alternative would be to further pillage.

3. Deal with the invasion and continue. For this option we should switch to maximize gold to upgrade homeland units. Note that the home defense is a little thin right now.

Summary:

T1. Scout Hangzhou - 3 Inf, 1 Cavalry, one of the infantry is level 2 city defender.

JJ02 1792.JPG

T2. Maneuvering into position at Hangzhou.
T3. Qin offers 340gp for peace. I say no way. Berlin>Broadway. Munich>Infantry. Dortmund>Infantry. Christianity spread to Hamburg. Switched Essen to Taoist temple.
T4. Libyan>Theater. Spread Judaism to Essen (4th religion - so I got a good roll).
T5. Captured Hangzhou with the loss of 1 cannon and 1 (unfortunately) well upgraded Infantry. Counter attack collects outside Osaka.

JJ02 1800.JPG

T6. Hamburg>Buddhist Temple. Munich>Christian Temple. Upped culture slider to 40% to combat war weariness.
T7. Cologne>Cannon. Libyan>Jewish Missionary. Karachi>Workboat.
T8. Did a little pillaging for cash. Repulsed an attack on Osaka. Our Machine Gunner took out 3 upgraded units.
T9. Munich>Factory. Libyan>Factory. Began the assault on Guangzhou. Discovered an invasion force of 4 Cavalry and 4 Cannon coming our way.

:goodjob: I was wondering if the war was a good idea, but by the looks of it, we've got it pretty much under control. How many units do we have near Guanzhou? If we can deal with the invaders, we should, the pillaging isn't that bad most of the time. And maybe we can hit China out of the race for the rest of the game.

btw Is krockel still a skip?

It is hard to know what to do without seeing our homeland defenses. Let's see where that invasion fleet lands before we decide what to do. Unless you stripped our defenses bare, graner, we can probably muster enough units to counter Qin's invasion stack. Chances are he will use the Cavalry to pillage rather than to support his Cannon attack force. During his last invasion, we had on a Maceman defending Karachi, and he chose to pillage our Spices rather than destroy the city. Silly AI!! :crazyeye:

If we take Guangzhou, it may not be very useful to use because of the cultural pressure. Therefore, if we capture it, we might be better off if we raze it.

played some, ran out of RL time

razed Guangzhou, killed invasion

Yeah, sorry, I was caught up with my relatives this weekend. Lobsterboy should be a skip, but I'll give him until tonight because I think he might not have realized he was up.

I was busy this weekend, and wasn't able to check in until late yesterday. Because I played only 2 turns ago, jejeep or Krockel should go ahead and play. I'll pick it up after the both of you have a turn.

Thanks for the entertainment guys. Following your SG to help make my jump from Prince to Monarch. Looks like you've got a space race on your hands with two big competitors. Good luck getting the elevator!

I fear we might need all the luck we can get. Since the start of the SG I've stepped up to monarch myself, and I'm now thinking of stepping up to Emperor (on duel/tiny maps though). This map however is pretty difficult because we are alone on a continent, and we couldn't kill of 1 or 2 opponents with maces and swords. We couldn't get a religion either, so that was really bad.
