JNES: Civilizations

JNES Civilizations

Update Three
1300 B.C.E.

We begin with possibly the greatest empire on earth: the Zulu Empire. With a continual supply of Zulu nomads coming to the empire from the south and a very expansionist attitude, the Zulu have managed to conquer a huge empire stretching from the jungles of central Africa to the Kingdom of Kush in the north. The army is the largest in the world, containing over a thousand men who march together under the leadership of the sole Shaka. In addition to a new gold mine, the nation has entered a sort of golden age, spurring economic development as more and more tribes are either assimilated or destroyed, their land taken and new Zulu villages established. The Zulu’s main threat, however, is the continual rise of powers around it, such as the Nayana to their east, who continually grow weary of the ascension of Zulu strength.

Possibly the greatest long-term threat to the Zulu, though, are the Kalambayi. With a growing population and an expanding empire, the Kalambayi have something the Zulu more or less lack: an attractive culture. With most of their people centralized in huge stone cities, the Kalambayi have developed a highly sophisticated culture that is very attractive to the common African villager. That doesn’t make them less aggressive, though. For those who do not join the Kalambayi, the whole village is usually destroyed and the people, if their lucky, sold into slavery.

The rest of sub-Saharan Africa continues to develop as well. Along with the founding of the Kush to the north, even further up the Nile the Napatans come into existence. Further south the Burundi rise as a powerful kingdom as well.

If we travel northwards and further along the Atlantic coast, we enter a new region of Africa, pretty much isolated from the rest. Here the Golohm build an extensive irrigation system that helps to spread the life-giving power of the Niger river further across the banks. The Golohm also see a spike in trade as it witnesses two new nations rise: the Mali further upriver and the Hausa just to the east. This puts the Golohm squarely in the middle of three nations, all who have an extensive population of traders who must travel through Golohm lands. So this either puts the Golohm at a clear economic advantage, or could be dangerous to the Golohm and be a defensive disadvantage.

Anyway you see it, cities have risen up almost overnight in the four nations here, some Golohm and Mali cities becoming the most beautiful in the world with fantastic desert backdrops, clear white walls, and a crystal blue river flowing within them.

Following the coast even further north, we come to the lonely and isolated Supusi. While they may be the only civilized people for miles, the Supusi are not poor. Centuries of trade with the Cuetan to the north have greatly enriched the people of this desolate land and have led to the construction of several cities. Though the colony established in the north has since dissipated before reinforcements arrived, the Supusi have since begun concentrating on the newfound islands off their coast. These islands, though only slightly less arid then the Supusi homeland, is helping to feed the growing cities of the coast. A highly organized way of fishing has also risen, and looks able to feed an even larger population. Sea turtles, caught in the islands, have become a national delicacy and their shells, beautifully decorated with traditional Supusi art, are becoming a huge commodity with the Cuetan.

Also, contact is made with the new Mali Empire to the southeast. The two natural trading peoples have already begun to heavily travel a safe route to each other’s markets. Supusi have even began leaving the coast to settle in the small oasis villages that have grown along this route.

And finally we come to the last part of civilized Africa, and perhaps the epitome of the whole continent. The Cuetan have grown extraordinarily in the past few generations, thanks to the invention of one thing: the sail (+ education). A lonely and forgotten Cuetan sailor is who to blame for the invention, though King Sieed was quick to claim responsibility. Immediately all galleys in the navy were outfitted with this simple yet very important device. The merchant galleys were quick to follow. With the galleys the Cuetan have now made contact with the peoples of the Italian peninsula, and has even set up its second overseas colony on an island off the coast of Iberia and made contact with the Valencians. The technology has sense spread throughout the Mediterranean, but the legacy of being the first to discover it in the western world will forever be with the Cuetans.

With increased movement and trade and combined maneuvers with the Iberians, the Cuetan colony on the mainland of Europe expanded exponentially, conquering many Celts but mostly forcing them from their traditional lands. The colony stretched from the Iberian border all the way across the southwest corner of the peninsula. Unfortunately, though, the colony did spread and grow too fast, and now the western most regions have broken off, the Cuetans here renaming themselves the Alazi.

-------

And now we enter Europe. We start our grand tour with the Aegean region, where I will update you on the Spartan-Pylos war. As the Spartans stand poised to deal the final blow to Pylos, the latter’s army stuck on the other side of Corinth, political turmoil has struck the capital of the former. The Spartan king has been murdered by a Pylos assassin. The army is divided as to whom to support, the King’s immediate heir or their general who was second in command of the army. Civil war erupts in Sparta, its forces withdraw from Pylos and its countryside before the city is sacked. Pylosian forces, now able to make it back to the Peloponnesus, takes advantage of the divided Spartans, invades, and burns the city of Sparta down. Sparta has fallen.

(Pylos: -200 footmen, Sparta: - nation)

But it would seem to be almost too late for the Pylos. During the war with Sparta, Pretsnez has already established it’s dominance of the Aegean region. Its merchants are the most numerous, its people the most populous.

There seems to be a weakness though. The Pretsnez lack a formidable navy. Perhaps there is chance for Pylos in this game that is the Aegean.

Meanwhile the Spartans who managed to flee Pylosian soldiers have taken to any ship they could find and sailed to the Ionian coast where they have set up a new city, Troy. The Trojans, as they call themselves, hope for peace with Pylos and have begun to build up their city that they hope they can call the greatest in the region. Meanwhile other Hellenic peoples also immigrate to the Ionian coast, setting up a second state, Sardis, south of Troy. In the north, along the border with Pretsnez, Thracians who have traveled far from the east, have established themselves a small kingdom as well.

The Pretsnez continue their subjugation of the Mycenaeans to the north, pushing their borders even further into the unknown. Trade with the Venetian Confederation is also helping the Pretsnez secure its financial power in the Aegean.

Next we go west to the Rich Sea1, where a culture that idolizes the rich and a religion that focuses on the drive to accumulate wealth reigns supreme. The Venetians are a growing power, dominating both the waves of the Rich Sea and the pocketbooks of those that dwell on the coasts. Particularly the colonies of the Venetian Confederacy grow during the last century, becoming centers of trade where Venetian, Mycenaean, Pretsnez, Canfre, Ravennan, and Apuli merchants meet. Of course this takes from the trade that is normally directed to Venice itself, but the colonies are in need of the traffic more. The subsequent population boom in the cities from Venetians (foreigners are still not allowed to dwell in the actual city) immigrating has led to the colonies becoming some of the most rich areas in the world. In the meantime, a large number of Illyrian tribes join the growing confederation, confident that they retain a lot of their local power and join in on the wealth of the confederation.

However, most other Illyrian tribes have formed a kingdom of their own, though far less powerful or wealthy as the Confederacy. Illyria, stretching along the Danube and into the rocky mountainous interior of the Balkans, relies almost exclusively on trade with the Confederation for its economy, though more and more Illyrians are dropping their tribal ways and beginning to farm the river valley.

Swinging back west, the Italian peninsula has slightly dipped into more aggressive times. The Canfre begin the century with mustering an army of nearly a thousand men to march on that last Etruscan stronghold, the city of Rome. The battle outside the primitive walls is of epic proportions, the Etruscans though are chased into their city. The siege that befalls the city lasts nearly three weeks until the Etruscans finally give up and peacefully surrender the city.

(Canfre: -200 footmen, -100 archers)

The Apuli in the south enter a stage of expansion as well, this time concentrating on the southern reaches of the peninsula where loosely united barbarians make up the population. Soon the entire peninsula is conquered, and in both the north and south a population boom begins, mostly due to the increase in trade and better agriculture technology (+ education to Canfre, Apuli, Ravenna).

Also contributing to the population boom of the peninsula is the introduction of a new people, the Latins, who appeared out of no where really. Legend has it they fought their way through Celtic lands all the way from an enchanted island to the far north, but those are just legends. The Latins, bringing with them a very sophisticated language and culture, establish for themselves a kingdom on the doorstep of Ravenna and Canfre, calling it Latinium.

Another kingdom also rises on the coast of the Mediterranean, established by a peculiar Celtic people called Gauls (named by the Latins). Though they conquer for themselves a rather large kingdom, the area was already lightly settled by Canfrens after the introduction of the sail to the peninsula. As a result of the Gauls, the Canfrens are quick to pledge allegiance to Canfre, and thus establish the first Canfren colony. This, seen as an affront to the Gauls, is sure not to last long without some blood being spilled.

Central Europe continues to advance as well, though large barbarian uprises characterize this century. The first of which was a Saxon invasion of Taverix, nearly spelling the end of the Taverixian confederation. A wise warrior, Sensonix, at the last minute was able to defeat Garl the Demonic of the Saxons from sacking the capital. With his band of warriors, Sensonix succeeded in pushing the rest of the Saxons out and even expanding the confederacy. When the council leader died from an unknown disease, Sensonix took the chance to use his considerable influence in the army in banishing the tribal council and setting himself up as monarch of the new Kingdom of Taverix. This act alone led a mass exodus of both Celts and Saxons who had been a part of the confederacy, and directly led to the birth of both the Confederation of the Celts to the west and the Saxon kingdom of Hamben to the north.

The most important thing to report for Halash is not a military conquest or genocidal policy, but a scientific breakthrough with the foundation of a written language, the alphabet, being created from the spoken language of Halash (+ education). The alphabet, comprising of nearly three dozen different markings, is used when writing on hides and is useful for storing information concerning taxes and property. As the alphabet becomes widely known (to the educated elite only), the monarchy has begun building a huge storehouse in which to keep the dozens of hides of records produced each day.

Finally to the most northern of civilizations, the Scandinavians. The Kurugeans, fighting a century-long war with the Gotians for supremacy of the region, have recruited Saxon warriors from the continent to help them win the war. The introduction of these warriors did indeed finally tip the scales, allowing Kurugeans to defend their capital against the Gotian advance and the Saxons pillage and destroy the Gotian homeland. Gotia fell within two weeks of its capital falling.

(Kurugea: -200 men, Saxons: -300 men, Gotia: - country)

For their hard-earned reward, the Saxons receive the aid from the Kurugeans in creating a civilized state, which they name Hevastia in honor of the Kurugean king who helped them found their state. The new Saxon state also serves as a gateway for the Kurugeans to finally meet and trade with the civilizations of the continent.

The Germans, in the meantime, have exploded upon Danmark, the ally of Kurugea. Thousands of barbarians have crossed the border of Danmark, wreaking havoc on the peaceful villages and routing the Danish army more than once. Osyao looks ready to fall, while the people of Danmark begin a mass exodus to their colonies, which they have already named Denmark.

(Danmark: -200 footnmen, -200 archers).

-------

Switching gears, we navigate to the last continent, North America. We will begin with one of the most sporadically-populated civilized area in the world: the Pacific Northwest. Here the three core tribes, the Taronlia, Chinook, and Asotin have lived in peace for generations. However, it was after the Taronlia invented a written language (used to create the Mangolia Code, a set of rules and laws now widely adopted throughout the region) (+education), that the Taronlians embarked on a series of campaigns to expand northwards. At first tribal resistance was fierce, and it looked as if the Taronlians would not gain much land, but they finally broke through by attacking a village from all sides and using galleys to more quickly transport men up rivers and along the coast. As a result of Taronlia’s expeditions, thousands of natives have been killed or banished to make room for Taronlian settlers.

Breaking through the tribes to the north also opened up a whole new world to the Taronlians. Contact is made with another peaceful coastal tribe, the Tongass. Along with the Tongass, contact is made with a huge tribal confederacy, the Saskatchewan, who are rumored by neighboring tribes to be very aggressive, yet very unstable.

Meanwhile back at home, another tribe is added to the region. The Yakima have grown peacefully from an obscure traditional tribe to one whose territory and hunting grounds stretch hundreds of miles. Most of what the Yakima have learned has come from Taronlia traders, and so relations with their “mother” tribe are friendly.

Across the vast plains and mountains of the continent, we come to the other side and yet again to another heavily forested region. The northeast has many more people though, resulting in many more civilizations. The region is still very much balanced, not a single tribe being overwhelmingly powerful, though the Wampanoag seem to be on the path. Campaigns to the north have finally ended the border with a new tribe, the Malnica. Traditionally very warlike, the Malnica have already began to gather warriors for what looks like an invasion of the northern reaches of Wampanoag.

Another northern tribes joins the fun, its name, Algonkin.

Meanwhile Seneca continues to grow just as the Wampanoag, though their borders are not yet limited by another civilized tribe. As the Chinook continue on their path back to greatness, trade continues to flow up the river, fueling a Senecan “golden age.”

The Mohegan, traditionally the traders of the northeastern coast, have been under pressure ever since the Delaware tribe has risen to dominance. Possessing a fleet nearly the same size as the Mohegan, the Delaware are situated closer to the thriving southern trade route, meaning more merchants stop here than continue on to Mohegan.

Following the coast south, two more tribes rise to dominance, mostly by power gained through trade with the Talomata, who have established colonies up and down the seaboard. These colonies have taught the natives, indirectly, the power of unity and civilization. The first tribe, coming from the north, are the Powhatan who have established a rare form of government here in the Americas, a monarchy. The Powhatan king is still very friendly with the Talomata, allowing the colony to expand in his territory as long as trade continues to flow in.

The second, the Coree tribe, is more of the traditional American tribe. Still somewhat friendly with the Talomatan colonists, the Coree are very territorial, and will tolerate no more expansion from the colonists there, or even the construction of a walled settlement. The Coree are also the better armed of the two.

The Talomata declare full out war on the Attaluscans, the southerly tribe of the shared peninsula. Though Talomata has by far the superior navy, their army is spread thin across an empire stretching hundreds of miles north. The Attaluscans know this, and as their navy is destroyed and their coastal homes and colonial islands are burned down by revolutionary Talomatan fire-arrow tactics, the Attaluscans begin a march northwards to engage the Talomatan on land. Marching along the coast so as to move faster, the army is continually harassed by Talomatan galleys, and finally, during a large storm, halted nearly a hundred miles inside Talomatan borders. The battle was not so much as a victory for Talomata as a stalemate, and as the storm cleared the Attaluscans crushed the small army sent here to oppose them.

Nearing Talomato, the citizens of the city begin to worry. Just as it seemed the capital would be sacked, the expedition sent north nearly a year before arrived, fully stocked with 200 Mohegan warriors who, along with the remnants of the Talomatans, crushed the Attaluscans ten miles from the city. A counterattack drove the remaining Attaluscans back across the border, through their land and finally to the walls of Attalusca.

(Talomata: -200 footmen, -150 archers, Attalusca: -300 footmen, -100 archers, -20 galleys)

The conquered Attaluscan lands are pillaged and every man over the age of 14 is killed. The younger men, along with women, are sold into slavery all across Talomata and even traded as far north as Wampanoag and Mohegan.

Meanwhile in the Caribbean Sea, the Curantis betray and Talomatan diplomatic convoy, seizing the galley they were sent on and imitating the sail technology and implementing it on all their vessels. The crew of the Talomatan ship are not heard from again. With a strong fleet now to counter the growing Choctaw threat, the Curantis actively engage the Choctaw raiders, cutting piracy and pillaging on the Curantis coast close to nothing.

(Curantis: -6 galleys, Choctaw: -4 galleys, Talomata: -1 galley)

Now with a secure homeland, the Curantis concentrate on conquering the rest of the island, and with the colonists help from the Attaluscan settlement, succeed in doing so with minimal losses. The Choctaw and Talomata, though, are angered and with the Attaluscans nearly defeated, the Curantis are left without an ally.

The Choctaw wake up from their long slumber and begin to rebuild their empire. Trade up the Mississippi is rekindled, and tribes that had previously rebelled against the empire are again added to the fold.

NPC Diplomacy

To Canfre
From Ravenna

The growing competition in our region has led to both of our kingdoms getting the short end of the stick. Canfre is bordered on the south by a stronger, belligerent Apuli and Ravennan trade is continually falling compared to the rising Venetian Confederacy. Our two peoples are historically and culturally very similar. In this way, I think it would be best for establishing our people as one in the form of a dual monarchy. (PM me if you are interested and I’ll fill you in on the details)

Notes:

Warman, that was a freebie.

Actually, I gave “freebies” to a lot of you…I didn’t get as many orders as I had thought. I will NPC your nation if you do not send orders twice in a row.

EQ, I didn’t receive orders from Jacobite, so I instead redirected your diplomacy to your friends the Mohegan tribe, who were happy to help.

I will add a map with names and new rules: trade and education, within a day.
EDIT: named map is up with the regular map in this post.

[1] The Adriatic Sea.

If I get enough orders in I would like to update Friday. But I doubt I will get enough orders in so update will probably be on Saturday.

Also, in making the named map, i noticed I didn't do anything for India (mainly cus I didn't get orders in). Sorry bout that, should orders be sent I will continue to update for that area.

To Talomata
We are sorry to hear about the loss of the crew of the galley, along with the diplomatic envoy. they apparently contract "Red Fever" a few days after arriving, and perished shortly after. the deisises occasionally plagues our Island, and while losses from it are somewhat light for us, apparently your people lack our partial Immunity to it, and suffered slow, painful death. after cleansing the bodies with flame to prevent another outbreak, we berried them as per our local custom. If you wish, we will return the ship to you, as a gesture of good will.

OOC: Eq, remeber, no survivors of the Diplomatic envoy or the ships crew, and we sure the heck not telling you what happened. as far as you know, what we say above is the truth.

Hail Danmark our ancestral allies! We understand you have recently encounter some... Troubles with the Germanics. And while we can fully understand your evacuation of your peoples to Denmark, unfortunately, this is our new frontier, and the home of our Saxon allies. We obviously will allow you to stay in Denmark, as you call it, but you may have to be willing to forfeit some of your more... Flous, political freedoms.

On the other hand if you would be willing to leave Denmark, we would be perfectly willing to help you defend and re-take old Danmark, for small fee of course.

Great update, Jason. You did a good job keeping things interesting, and I appreciate it. Hopefully my less-than-impressive NESing skills will improve with such a challenge... or Golohm will destroyed.
