JNES: Learning to Walk

well considering its very doubful that history have even hear dof the place

Wrong, it did. It was a historical trade center that was the primary link between Russia and England (and with the West at large) before the construction of St. Petersburg, after which Arkhangelsk SLOWLY begun to decline in significance, in part due to huge dues charged by Peter I to divert trade from it.
the vast majority of people on earth havent as well

I didn't live in the 16th century yet ( :p ), but whilst I'm not exactly sure about how well-known it was outside of Northern Europe, in that region anyway it was rather significant. Furs were at the time Russia's primary export, see Karamzin.
I'm highlly skepticle fo what you term "signinificant center of trade" actually being such ionstead of "a tiny, insignificant place in the middle of nowhere, but in that regard, its still the biggest thing up there" which isnt, in my eyes, the same thing.

Do you even know where Arkhangelsk is located? Just wondering. Right now, it is rather insignificant, apart from the fishing fleet - St. Petersburg and Murmansk are stealing much of the trade. Still, it is an important part of the Northern Sea Route.

Just because you didn't hear anything about it doesn't mean that it wasn't significant. Before you started talking about it, I never heard about Tartessos neither.

"Bahris." - said the elder, quietly - "Bahris is the one who deserves it most. He is young - but this is good, for all vody are warriors above anything else. Besides, we all know his wisdom in political matters - many of us consulted him in the past, and he is respected by the selad."

This caused some initial discontent whispers - Bahris WAS rather young, only 23 years. The youngest vodad of the Yatery was Irhis, 25 years old when he was chosen as such - and he died many hundreds of years ago.

"True." - nodded one of the few calm elders - "But what of the other candidate? Remember - Bahris only recently became a Swordlord. Would Swordlord Lehrus not make a better vodad, considering his experience as a warrior - and a commander? Bahris is strong, and wise, but he lacks experience."

"Is fighting the Tehry not enough experience?" - asked the first elder.

"He fought them - with sword and axe, with javelin and sling. But not with troops. He only recently begun leading scout parties to track down Tehry remnants. Before that, he never commanded any group of men. And a vodad must be more then a warrior - he must also be a commander."

"I believe that Bahris has proven his great skill in those few operations he conducted. With all due respect, Irhis is way too cautious."

"Whilst Bahris is way too headstrong. But remember - when a hunter attacks a deer immediately, without preparing, without studying the situation properly, he is likely to fail, as the prey will run away."

"But while a hunter waits and waits and waits, the deer will move on! Remember - gods favour the bold..."

"The bold Tehry were favoured by the gods until they got too bold and too arrogant - and were cast down, and are even now being slaughtered. Do you want us to become Tehry?"

The elders begun shouting in approval of the second one of the orators. All, apart from one. That particular elder suddenly stood up and entered the debate.

"Here we discuss not just the fate of the selad." - he said, quietly and convincingly - "We also decide the fate of two human beings, human beings that were not even consulted. All here have heard of the spawn of Perad, the Zlida selad that most claim to have been destroyed - but others claim to have survived and fled north. Regardless their fate, the Zlidy were ruled by one man, who consulted nobody else of them and who deicded the fates of his tribe alone, and had the priests of Perad enforce his unnatural, tyrannical rule. But are we much better then that man if we are to decide the fates of Bahris and Lehrus by ourselves? I propose that we invite them here and ask them what do they want."

The others, grudgingly or not, agreed. After all, it would be embarassing if they were to choose somebody in heated debate just to find out that he doesn't want to rule the selad.

---

"Swordlord Lehrus, as you are aware vodad Marhus has recently died. The Sherad of elders has convened to choose the new vodad, but we did not choose yet. However, in the face of your bravery and skill, we decided to consider your candidature and that of..."

---

"Swordlord Bahris, there is only one other candidate apart from you left - Swordlord Lehrus. The elders, however, are uncertain as to which one of the candidates deserves this great honour and can be trusted to carry this great burden to the greatest good of the selad. Whereas we do not doubt that whoever we choose will carry it out to the best of his abilities, how great those abilities are will only be determined when one of you becomes vodad..."

---

"...and whilst personally, I hope that it will be you, this is too important a matter not just for our selad but also for you. Only you can know and understand yourself fully. Are you up to the task? Can you take up this responsibility, Swordlord Lehrus? Or..."

---

"...do you think that Swordlord Lehrus will be a better choice? Mind you, even if you say that you do not think so, it will not be taken as disrespect for him. Alright, I realize that those speeches perhaps bore you - in that case, allow me to put it bluntly..."

---

"...are you, if chosen vodad, truly and fully ready for this task? Will you accept the Sherad's decision not just in words, but also in your heart and mind? Or do you have any doubts about your candidature?"

---

"Thank you for coming here, Elder Terlas. It is a most difficult matter... and I feel that Lehrus' experience is greater then mine. He is wiser - and he will surely be a better choice."

---

"Elder Korhos... A vodad in our seladp is not just a general of the armies. Had he been, I would have accepted - for I already am a commander. But politics... The burdens of rule and of diplomacy... The intrigues... It is all just not for me. It tires me worse then any battle. I am 38 years old. I am still ready and willing to fight and die in the name of the selad. I still can wield the sword. But political combats are much worse, much harder, much more strain on an old man. And let it not be taken as offence, but... remember the lity, about balance of ages in reign. I have seen too much, and inside I am even older then my age. Let a young man rule. His energy will balance and be balanced by your patience. Let the one who is..."

---

"...more experienced be the vodad. And finally, allow me to add this. Do not dismiss me as superstitious. But I saw many bad dreams, dreams about what might come out of my reign as a vodad. Perhaps, those were simply dreams. But..."

---

"...they who go against the will of gods are doomed. And dreams sometimes express the will of gods."

---

"I see, Swordlord Bahris. And I understand your worries and doubts. But regardless..."

---

"...if the Sherad chooses you, will you accept the decision?"

---

"I gave an oath."

---

"An oath to act according to what my conscience tells me."

---

"And though with doubts... I will, if the Sherad..."

---

"...refuse nonetheless. I thank you for coming, Elder Korhus. But I already explained - I am willing to serve the selad as a military commander. But a young, energetic new vodad will be for the best. I know Swordlord Bahris. I am certain that he will be a better..."

---

"...vodad." - Bahris concluded. It was cold on that evening - "I will be your vodad if the Sherad chooses me. But I will only accept it with a heavy heart, though I will do my best to ensure that the events of my visions will not come to be. Do not ask me of those visions, please. For I do not want other people to suffer from the same doubts as I do."

---

"He refused." - said Korhus, with disillusionment in his voice. Oh well, on the other hand they would not have to kill more time on this.

"And Bahris agreed." - said Terlas, entering the hut.

"Other candidates?" - asked the third elder, the one who suggested that they should ask the candidates.

"No." - the other elders said in unison.

"Then it is decided. Bahris will be the new vodad."

To be continued.

I think you mis understood what i was getting at- mainlyl because it was typo ridden, and this case, i even left out entire words ;)

I meant to say most people involed in world history havent heard of the place specifically

well and good, but its hardly significant in the greater scheme of things- when people imagine trade, people dont imagin fur out posts, they imagine images of constantinople, with silks, and spice and eveything nice being traded at inflated prices and then set off the 4 corner sof the world. not a trade outpost, no matter how important that happens to be important on the fur trade routes.

just curious, how important is the northern sea route in Russian trade terms both today, and in prior areas, as compared to say, more warm water ports in the same area, or othe rports in russia proper in say the black sea.

Just because you didn't hear anything about it doesn't mean that it wasn't significant. Before you started talking about it, I never heard about Tartessos neither.

because Tartessos has been lost and buried (and still is buried) for the last 2500-3000 years ;)

CITY STATE OF ARURIA

Aruria have been going for several years now. It have easily became a magnifisant and huge city. Several problems to bring food and water into the city were noted but the King had it all under control, Aruria would become the grandest city in the world.

In the southern parts of the city the quite large harbor became the center of the city. As one of the most important areas in the city, and the entrence to the sea the king wanted to honor it and the petron god of Aruria Ludius, god of the seas. A large palace have begun to be built..

ORDERS
Begin Large Temple to Ludius (1SP ofcourse)
Begin irrgrating around Aruria.

then you die!

if I can be arsed to write a story (and I am ;)) then most everyone can, me thinks ;)

Yes but some of us don't take the time for high-quality... :)
hmm, maybe humor or even gnomish humor could be taken to use in the future...

The Bloody shores of the Arriso Sea

Avernum

galleryimage9938325jw.jpg

Avernum. Reminum. Davia. Three nations locked in a struggle as old as when these cities were fist settled on the Great peninsula of Avernea. Along the river Aeo, starting in settlements, and growing with hills forts and now topped with great white-walled citadels and senates, a fortresses no longer for kings but the people, the city states of Avernea have fought, honing in their militaristic styles and wits like no nation before them, and no nation that exists with them.

Adventurous and daring by nature- though many comment that both can be summed up with “fool hardy courage” The people of Avernea- divided into their states, but still Avernites all, while proud of their resolute and famed position as warriors (and more then a few travel the lands, working as mercenaries) it is hardly the only occupation to be found in Avernum; great orchards of fruits, particularly abundant being ripe melons, oranges and grape vines, and great ships ply the waves to catch fish, and, more then a few have ventured out into the seas to explore (legend tell of a great explorer who left with 20 great ships, filled to the breaking point with people and supplies, and setting sail over the waves, and creating their own nation) and outside of sailing and farming, the occupations that hold the most regard in the Avernite nations, aside from that of the warrior, are, contrary to what many opinions would be held of the war-like Avernites, metal smithing, and more so contrary, the art of the scribe, an occupation held in the highest regard, and many learn the written language of the land in hopes that their fancy writing may be noticed and applauded, and that they might take residence in a great house, or commissioned by the city to write the edicts, and the epics, the charters and the treaties that go on; for in the land of Avernea, there is always a charter or a treaty to be had... until recently, that is.

In recent days, the rivalry between the nations of Reminum and Davia has hardened, beyond the petty rivalry that existed before, and the two are now at all out war, not the border skirmishes and raiding parties that all three employed to keep their men sharp in the advent of war; and the ardent men of these nation clamor for it with each other- the reason, who knows, the trigger could have been more then hundred petty little instances of farmers who happen to be a relative of a big-man in their capital city taking to arms with a rival of the other nation of a similar status; perhaps one raid to many, perhaps, perhaps, perhaps- the reasons may well never be known to Avernum, but the fact that two fo the three greater Avernite nations march to war now throws many possibilities into the air; perhaps Avernum itself can annex its neighbors, weakened by internal war. Perhaps Avernum will join with one and conquer the other. Or perhaps this war will lead to a peaceful unification fo the three greater Avernite nations. Whatever the result, it is clear that the war between Reminium and Davia will have consequences for all.

Bistonian Orders

The Republic's senate, although at some times corrupt and indecisive, has voted and passed the following orders to be carried out this year:

The Senate knows that a narrow section of land seperates Biston from the east. So, they have decided to provide money to begin building a canal through that small area of land, to allow transpotation of ships.

To guard that canal, a huge wall, east of the canal, will be build, from the northern ocean to the southern one, to keep the Barbarians and their hordes away from civilization. It will be manned by 500 of the royal army.

2000 more men will begin the expansion to the east, making border forts that will eventually lead to cities.

In the west, 2500 men will expand to the west, making border forts that will eventually lead to cities.

More men will be trained to be added to the Bistonian National Legion (BNL).

On the home front, the senate has debated several issues. The land around Biston will be made fertile, and industry, especially naval trade, wil be funded and increased by the senate. Finally, the Bistonian Merchant Fleet (BMF) will be increased.

If thats too unrealistic, just say. The Canal: Alexander the Great planned a canal through the ishmus of Corinth. It is possible. The Wall: Hadrians Wall was much longer then the one I plan.

I dont know if it was computer generated, or if it was just shot with a ****ty digital camerra- I'll have to do a search on the site i got it off of, and and find it agian- IIRC, it was called "the ountouched souther lands" so it could easilly go both ways (but the name tiself makes me think New Zealand, off hand)

Xen, you underestimate how important the fur trade was. Russians, French, British and Americans, among others, all conquered in the name of fur.

Ever hear about the Hanseatic League, perhaps?

Em... May i point out that the canal Alexander the Great planned through the ishmus of Corinth would be built using the resources of his Empire? (okay, not his Empire, just Greece) And since we're like barely "civilized" how can we build canals lest one that long? The same with the Wall

I've heard all abotu the hanseatic league- and they werent fur traders buddy, it only one of a thousand commodities that coudl be found in ports under thier control, so dont even try to pull the wool ove rmy eyes in claimign that it was built on fur; it was a economic-politcal orginization that was based on tottal trade control over the flow of all commodities in northern europe after they had left the hands of the Italian merchants who similerlly controlled the trade in central and southern europe (the Venetians even had favoured status in the HRE)

the fur trade was important local economies, but in the long run its only a tiny factor in what it takes to make a nations economy in any era run.

Canal - Dig a 'river' between the two oceans, and call it a canal. wall-the length of the wall is barely 2 miles, I think we can throw up a pile of mud pricks and stakes and call it a wall. :)

how do you know its only 2 miles? could be the size of panama, for all we know; no map scale for size has so far been given, after all.

1. How do you even know that the two sea's water depth is the same? The northern sea may have higher elevation thus making it impossible for us to build.

2. To "dig" a river large enough to actually you know fit boats is kinda hard. Rivers run downhill, and since you're assuming that the two seas are of the same height why would the water even move from the sea to the other?

3. How do you know that the length of the wall is barely two miles? The map doesn't have a scale if i understand..

Nope!

If one 'pixel' equals a mile, then three miles. And like Hadrians Wall (unlike the GWoC) the wall is mearly forts connected by a wall for defense.
