JNES.N2: The World, Again
Update 1, 1500b.c.e.
World Events
The Icelandic people, occupants of a small, forested island in the north have banded together to form their own nation, the nation of Iceland. Here they practice the first ever democracy, with the creation of the Althing Republic. However, a militaristic despot named Henry thirsts for blood, and with his supporters, drives the Althing supporters to the barren east where they barely scratch out a living.
Just across the Norwegian Sea lie the people of Scandinavia, or the people of the mountain as named by the Vikings. Escaping the harsh Viking rule centuries ago, the Scandinavians have been able to make the best out of their harsh environment; with mining and fishing being the major activities and duties of the people. From the mines they extract precious gems and iron ore, which they trade with the Scottish Picts across the sea or with the Vikings to their east. This merchant ideal has shaped the people into merchants, though the Viking blood still runs thick in their veins, and the thirst for battle is felt among all.
The citadel of Troy was established so far back, that not even story is known of the origin. However, only recently has the city-state risen to supremacy among the minor towns and villages of Anatolia. The nation, though overshadowed by the Athenians, is not one to be forgotten. Controlling the Bosporus straights, strategic trading routes to the northern Black Sea, the Trojans bring in wealth from tolls. This wealth then goes to supply and build an Athenian-like army, and a professional navy that is worthy of the Aegean Sea. Merchants, yes, but defense is their specialty.
The Antafan people of the desiccated Sahara are one of herding and riding. Their history dates back to nearly the dawn of time, but only now have they decided to reach the end of the desert, and the beginning of the endless water. Having nothing else but he ability to herd their sheep and other livestock for food and trade, the Antafan look to a hard future if valuable land can not be taken. Meanwhile, the greedy Songhai and Mali in the south look upon the trade routes that run through Antafan with voracity.
Of the peoples of Japan, Ryukyus are the most prominent. Establishing an empire that rivals the Ainu, Ryukyus strives to hold what they have conquered, from Shikoku to Taiwan. The people are predominantly seafarers, relying on their advanced skills of navigation, and their superior galleys to connect the various islands that have fallen under the control of the people. Though located a bit south of the main islands on the island of Okinawa, Ryukyus has made its presence felt in the islands with the conquest of Kyushu and southern Shikoku before reaching peace with the Hideyoshi, in which the Hideyoshi pay hefty sum of money to the Ryukyus (+ economy). Meanwhile, the Amami insurgents are quelled in brute force by the Ryukyus army and navy, a show of brute force that is demonstrated for the rest of Japan.
Norrath, one of four Chinese states, is the most outspoken state in the region. Being only second in size, after the Chu, Norrath has the best ability to recruit a strong enough army to unite all four states. However, the Norrath are actually profiting for allowing the two northern states to survive; constant barbarian attacks from the north have been blocked by these two states. However, the emperor does try to remember why he has allowed the Chu remain.
Majapahit, a nation of southeast Asia, once sprawled throughout the huge archepilgo, stretching from eastern Brunei to western Siam. However, an invasion of inlanders from the north, as well as sporadic and harsh civil war brought the downfall of the naval empire. The modern state of Siam was established by the northerners, and the various domains claimed their independence. However, the new king, Raja Hayam Wuruk, has ascended to the throne, and ushers in a new age for Majapahit.
The Union of Gaia, founded through blood and war, consists of a very militaristic society that lives on blood and battle. Known for their mercenaries throughout Greece, the Gaians finally established their own kingdom in the Crimean peninsula under the notorious leader of Amon Savag. The nation, though successfully in all its small campaigns, lacks wealth to purchase weapons and feed their soldiers. Most envy the Scythians to the east, whose Black Sea routes with the Greeks produces wealth beyond the ordinary dreams of the Gaians.
The people of snow, the people of the east, the people of the white land; these are just a few of the ways the Roddynians are known throughout east Europe. Etching out a life in the barren lands has taught most Roddynians the specialty of obedience, and the importance of the state that guards the only year-round crop planting region in the west from the raging Teutonians who have fought many wars for it. The Roddynians then need to worry about the state to the north, the Fennians (a la Finmaster, may he return soon) crouch ever closer to the city upon the sea.
Gallaray sits among the most efficient, and wealthy, nations in the world. With only the nation of Kush separating it from the rich lands of the Nile, Gallaray experiences vast amounts of wealthy caravans trekking south, and then trekking north again. However much trade does enter the nation, the people are still mostly farmers and herders, making a living out of what the river brings, and of what the ground can produce. Various wars with the tribes of the eastern unknown has rotten the once might army of Gallaray, but with the arrival The Itege, all is soon to change.
Thousands of years ago, the people of Insayah believed they were tricked into crossing the Bering land bridge into a paradise, when in fact they were cheated and were left stranded from their homeland. Here in the icy weather they survived, and soon became the people of four great nations. The Insayah are skilled fishermen and dwell mostly on the coast where they fish. They are well known for their warm and luxurious grizzly fur coats, and trade for these furs and others stretch up and down the whole coast.
