INTO: I HAVE THIS SECTION ALREADY RECORDED
Judah the Maccabee, son of Matthias the priest of Modi'in, may God be your shepherd. You and your army of freedom fighters destroyed the Seleucid control over your homeland and cleansed the holy temple from foreign deities. Your people, the givers of the "Good Book" - the old testament, holding the basic moral rules of Humanity. During your peoples life upon this earth you suffered many great obstacles and threats - from Egypt, to the Philistines, from the Assyrians to the Babylonians, from Spain to Germany - yet you continued to rise back up and claim your right for life - and independence.

O Judah, Hammer of the lord, your people look up to you to lead them to glory! To make Judea the superpower it once was and the fear of any foe! Oh Hasmonean, will you take up the challenge? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

Okay, I have to ask, with all of the work you've already done, why not just do it yourself? Getting from where you are now to where you want to be is pretty easy -- you've done most of the hard work already.

I have a few objections here.
1 - Why does everyone give Israeli civs a desert start bias? Have you not heard of the 'Land of Milk and Honey'?
2 - What does the slinger have to with anything?
3 - Yehuda Hamaccabea died fighting against the Seuccuids. His brother Shimeon became king and high priest once the Kingdom was reestablished, and when it was it was not just Judea, but the entire land of Israel.
I'd love to help you with any ideas or anything. BTW, are you Israeli, or Jewish or both? Feel free to ignore this question in your reply.

I think that a couple of biblical stories give rise to Israel/Judah mods across all civ versions having two elements - the desert bias due to the Exodus story and the slinger due to the David and Goliath story. I'm not saying that makes it right to have that start bias and UU, just saying that's why I think people have them.

Now that you mention it it seems fairly obvious. But also like you said, it still doesn't make sense. And back then it was not called a Synogogue, but a Beth/Beis Medrash or Beth/Beis Knesset.

I also made an Israel civ, led by Ezra and Nehemiah.

I started them on Plains.
They had a synagogue building, that probably should be called a Beth Medrash or Beis Knesset, as Murphy points out.
They had a Mossad building as well, which gives them extra spies.

Their Unique ability gave them +ranged combat strength, and an additional Social Policy when they built a Grand Temple.

Also, I (not being Jewish or Israeli) was pretty happy that I found a website with the "proper" Hebrew names of cities, so I had Yarusalayim instead of Jerusalem, for example.

That, in my opinion, is pretty awesome. Makes for a great flavor mechanic, and more historic too. (But its Yerushalayim, lol.)
And thanks again for helping me out with the Aliyah lua code for my Israel mod . . . there's a million of those floating around.

P.S. I looked on Steam and Civfanatics - where's your Israel civ?

I have a few objections here.
1 - Why does everyone give Israeli civs a desert start bias?

Well, a lot of people use start biases wrong.

Everyone just throws them in for historical flavor, but that is not the model that the official civs use. Firaxes only gives a civ a start bias if they specifically have a unique that uses it early in the game. A good civ modder (outside of specific scenarios or total conversion mods) should never giv their civ a start bias just because. If your civ doesn't have a unique that needs the biases before the middle of the game, you shouldn't give your civ any biases at all.

In this case, however, the OP specifically gave their civ a UA that uses desert tiles, so the biases is justified.

I suck at modding.

1 - Judea, the geographical region, is mainly a desert (see - Judean desert). The Northern kingdom ruled over the Galilee and the coast - the fertile areas. If you go by the area of the Maccabees, they ruled all of the land - but started in the Desert (the area around the Jerusalem and the area of Iudea province), thus, in the start they should start in the desert.

2 - Slingers were a major weapon against the Seleucids, the Romans and the Byzantines (with Sassanid help). Also, king David used a sling to kill Goliath (so, it's also symbolic).

3 - Yes, he did. Shim'on was the first king of the Hasmonean kingdom but Yehudah the Maccabee is more remember for his leadership of the rebellion and his symbolic stature in later Jewish mythology and stories.

I am a Jewish Israeli, I live in Israel.

Well, I don't use it for mare historical reason - the bias is used as the unique ability is used - +2 :c5faith: Faith from desert tiles - which is essential for the religious growth of the civilization.

Sorry, I hadn't seen the trait. Faith from desert sort of makes sense, but the other 2 don't. Perhaps give their units a bonus near their holy cities, even if an enemy captures it? Though this would need lua and be complicated. . . .

Yeah, now that I see that... The trade route bonus is stupid - but the faith is completely logical.

Both historically (the centralization of the faith in Jerusalem by king Josiah) and, as I said, helps the religious part of the civilization which is central in the development of the civ.

thread 116

May be you'd like to team up for improving the work of that guy?
There are custom sceens with the leader to do and I think special unit change will be needed.
Being an Israeli I can even voice them (too bad I haven't got slightest idea in modding as well-my best was a castle in Oblivion)

I'm not sure what you mean by improving the work of that guy, and if you mean Leugi's mod - well, he doesn't need my help. But I am working on a Maccabean Revolt scenario which should make you and Ahlabush happy. Its about halfway done.

The only thing I see wrong with this mod idea is that the OP has all the leader sayings written down, which nobody uses, because no one knows how to make the 3D animated leaderscreens and seeing a still person standing there, saying stuff without moving their mouth, is, well... slightly "off", to say the least ;).

LOL, yeah that occurred to me too.

Edit - Here's a screenshot from my aforementioned mod:

Yes I did mean to improve Laugi's mod-I am not happy with his UU of choice and it doesn't have cut-sceens with the leader, however I understand, from post above, that you don't know how to make it as well
