Keniisu's Design Workshop!

How's this?

UA: The Reconstruction -
Captured cities control provide a +2 Culture :c5culture: boost whilst they are annexed :c5occupied: and under your control. For every 8 Citizens :c5citizen: that are within a captured city that you own, gain +2 Science :c5science: per turn.

UU: Northern Brigade -
Replaces Rifleman. When this unit is adjacent to another friendly Gunpowder unit, gain +20% Combat Strength :c5strength: towards cities as well as an additional +1 Movement :c5moves:.

UB: Freedmen's Bureau -
Replaces the Hotel. Yields +2 Global Happiness :c5happy: and +3 Food :c5food:. Upon the birth of a Citizen :c5citizen: gain a sum of Golden Age :c5goldenage: points.

For a second I thought you were doing Liberia.

What's up with the non-descriptive generic nameness of the uniques?

I mean, Reconstruction is what you call that particular era of American history so I wouldn't call the UA name generic. I think Union Brigade sounds kind of better than Northern Brigade and I guess that genericness stems from the lack of interesting names in the US army during Reconstruction.

Dunno, personally I would have gone with either Galvanized Yankee or Buffalo Soldier to go along the thematic, if not the period itself.

The Ancient World - Designs
The Aztecs (Montezuma I)
UA: Sacrifice to the Gods -
When one of your friendly units kill an enemy unit grant your civilization Faith :c5faith:. Upon the destruction of a Barbarian Encampment have a 33% chance to gain a "Sacrificial Blessing" which grants Faith :c5faith: and a free Worker near the capital.

UU: Jaguar Warrior -
Replaces the Warrior. This unit gains +1 Movement :c5moves: when starting the turn on a Jungle tile. When attacking a city, produce Culture :c5culture: depending on the city's defense :c5strength:.

UB: Chinampa -
Replaces the Granary. Grants an additional +1 Food :c5food: and +1 Culture :c5culture: if built in a city next to a River.

Sparta (Leonidas)
UA: Men of Might -
Upon the construction :c5production: of a Barracks or further upgrades, all units produce before the building was made gain expereince depending on the Era. All units gain +20% Strength :c5strength: when attacking :c5war: units stronger than your own. May not create Settlers.

UU: Spartiate -
Replaces the Spearman. Gains +10% Strength :c5strength: for each adjacent Spartiate when attacking an enemy unit.

UB: Agoge Barracks -
Replaces the Barracks. When units are trained in this city they gain the "Prideful" promotion granting them +10% Combat Strength :c5strength: when attacking :c5war: units with greater Strength than your own.

Erm Montezuma I is a wee bit out of the time period for an 'ancient world' design, I don't know if the UB is the best idea either - it's exactly the same as the Granary in most cases and doesn't seem all that compelling :p

I'm not really a fan of the Sparta design - It really doesn't seem that distinct from the three or four other Leonidas-led Spartan civs (including MC's upcoming one). Sparta was a pretty interesting polity, it'd be nice to see some more variation in the multiple takes on it.

I do apologise if I've been unduly harsh.

Oh you're not coming off harsh in the slightest mate :)
Anywho, I do agree it was out of the time period, but I didn't want to run the lesser leaders as they're known for far less (arguable) and I felt he fit well enough. Considering the Granary, I agree. I didn't have many ideas for a UB that would fit the overall central idea of the design so a suggestion would be nice.

The Spartan design is kinda hard to differentiate as the Spartans are particulary known for "Brutalness" and "Toughness" so making anything different would seem odd to put it bluntly. I think the design isn't the most unique, but fits them well enough to work fine for them.

I feel like the problem is that the Aztecs don't belong in the "ancient world" classification at all, regardless of leader. Compared to the Spartans (or specifically the Leonidas-inspired Spartans), the Aztecs are more than a millenia removed--Leonidas and his stand at Thermopylae was in ~480 BCE, whereas the Aztecs rose in ~the 14th century CE.

I would say my problem with it is that it doesn't strike me as uniquely Spartan; it's more of a generic "strong military" Civilization. Some of the defining traits of Spartan culture, like the Helots, aren't represented, and the Agoge Barracks simplifies the entire idea of "Agoge" as a military one, when it was so much more, so as to be pretty much representative of the Spartan way of life.

Naming conventions are down to preference, but in my eyes "Men of Might" is a pretty generic name, something that I see occur a lot in your designs. Agoge fits more in a UA interpretation than it does a UB, and if you insist on keeping it a UB, at least make the promotion it gives more inspired--"Prideful" is generic too; go with something like "Wall of Sparta" instead (a metaphorical wall referring to the Spartan warriors, due to the fact that Sparta did not have defensive walls). Even better, use that for a UA name--Walls of Sparta. Keep the experience gain (Agoge, after all, was a system of education) but rejig the bonuses to be less centered around flat Strength increases and more interesting. Also related: your bonuses are not nearly strong enough to make the "no training Settlers" an adequate drawback; as is, the Civilization is just heavily gimped.

I also have similar problems with the name of your Aztec UA--the design itself isn't bad (aside from its Granary replacement being boring), but its name is uninspired as well. Try something like "Flower Wars," or, if you want something really thematic, "Xochiyaoyotl" (which, roughly translated, is "Flower Wars.") It would go well with the theme, as the Flower Wars were historically Aztec wars that were fought not for conquest, but in order to obtain sacrificial captives.

Again, not trying to be confrontational; it's great you've got so many ideas to throw around (more than myself, that's for sure), but they could use some more thought to give them flavor and make them stand out.

Naming is my worst point when making designs, I'll admit. I'll redesign the civilizations with more uniqueness soon as I do see flaws in the design which could use more flavor and improvement.

Civilizations of Old - Designs
The Aztecs and Sparta

The Aztecs (Montezuma I)
UA: Flower Wars -
When one of your friendly units kill an enemy unit grant your civilization Faith :c5faith:.

Alongside the regular yields of the Granary, for every three sources of Wheat, Cocoa or Bananas this building grants +1 Faith :c5faith: to your civilization.

Sparta (Leonidas)
UA: Walls of Sparta -
When a unit is trained in a city where a Barracks is present, they gain the "Agoge" promotion granting +15% Combat Strength :c5strength: and +10% Defense :c5strength: from Ranged attacks. Units that are attacking :c5war: units that are stronger than them gain +20% more experience than normal.

UU: Spartiate -
Replaces the Spearman. Gains +10% Strength :c5strength: for each adjacent Spartiate when attacking an enemy unit. When a Great General is in an adjacent tile this unit gains +1 Movement :c5moves:.

UB: Agoge Barracks -
Replaces the Barracks. Units trained in the city where this is built have +10% Combat Strength :c5strength: when attacking :c5war: Siege or Mounted enemy units.

The Modern America and What Could Be? - Designs
Obama's America and Trump's America

America (Barack Obama)
UA: The Modern Democracy -
For each allied City-State :c5citystate: that you have your nation gains a "Democratic Bonus" which grants a Culture :c5culture: boost every 15 turns. In the World Congress, whenever one of your proposals get passed, gain a Science :c5science: boost depending on your amount of delegates.

UU: Navy SEAL -
Replaces the Infantry. This unit gains the "Raid" promotion allowing for +25% Combat Strength against Barbarians units and encampments. This unit may cross City-State borders without penalty if currently at War with another civilization.

UB: House of National Survelliance (HNS) -
Replaces the Police Station. For each Spy you have stationed in another civilizaiton's capital gain a Science :c5science: boost depending on the number of Delegates you possess in the World Congress.

United States (Donald Trump)
UA: Make America Great Again -
Upon the construction of Walls within a city gain a sum of Gold, and +2 Production :c5production: in the city, however, lose-1 Citizens :c5citizen: in each of your cities. Units that are stationed in friendly territory gain +20% Combat Strength :c5strength:.

UU: Hired Patrolmen -
Replaces the Infantry. Gains +15% Strength :c5strength: when attacking City-States. This unit grants Production :c5production: to your nearest city when attacking an enemy city with more Defense :c5strength: than your captial's.

UB: Country Borders -
Replaces the Walls. Provides +7 City Defense :c5strength: and +65 HP. When you have a unit garrisoned in the city gain +3 Production :c5production:.

I like both of these American designs, although I do suggest making Trump's UB something that doesn't replace Walls since the UA already provides a bonus to them. Perhaps Trump Tower could replace the stock exchange or bank or maybe a Factory replacement to reference Trump's promises of returning outsourced jobs? If you were to actually make Trump I would also suggest making it compatible with the accurate great generals mod and make Sheriff Joe Arpaio one of Trump's generals since it would be hilarious to see Arpaio leading America's patrolmen.

UB: Chinampa -
Replaces the Granary. Alongside the regular yields of the Granary, for every three sources of Wheat, Cocoa or Bananas this building grants +1 Faith to your civilization.
Is this empire-wide or just city-based? Because if it's just city-based it's ridiculously under-powered. Either way it's not very interesting for a UB.

Also, I don't really think it fits the historical use of Chinampas. They were basically farms on lakes, so the bonus from Bananas and Cocoa is.. strange, to say the least. The vanilla Floating Gardens are Chinampas, and they also have more appropriate bonuses.

I would suggest adopting the Floating Garden yields and spicing them up in some way to make them your own (bonus for being next to lakes?) or changing Chinampas into lake UIs.

Russia Split Part 1 - Designs
Grand Duchy of Moscow | Imperial Russia

Moscow (Ivan III)
UA: Gathering of The Lands -
Upon the conquering of another civilization's city, gain a permanent +10% Production :c5production: bonus in one of your cities. (Chosen randomly) When you settle another city that is close to another Civilization's city (4-8 Tiles in Range) gain a starting bonus +2 Production :c5production: in that city.

UU: Strelet -
Replaces the Pikeman. Whenever this unit is in the borders of an Annexed City :c5occupied: gain +20% Combat Strength and +1 Movement :c5moves:. When attacking enemy cities, gain a +10% Combat Bonus towards them.

UB: Abatis Border -
Replaces the Castle. Unlike the Walls it replaces, this building provides the city in which it is built with +6 City Defense :c5strength:. This building provides units constructed in this building with +5XP.

Imperial Russia (Peter I)
UA: Emperor of All Russia -
Technologies that have been researched by a civilization you've made of Declaration of Friendship :c5influence: with +35% faster. Allied City-States :c5citystate: decrease Social Policy costs by 15%.

UU: Two-Decker -
Replaces the Frigate. This unit gains experience +10% faster for each active Declaration of Friendship :c5influence: you've made. Alongside this bonus, each City-State :c5citystate: you have allied with provides this unit with +5% Combat Strength :c5strength:.

UB: Collegia -
Replaces the Courthouse. Can be built in cities that aren't Occupied :c5occupied:. Has base yields of +2 Production :c5production:. When you have an active Declaration of Friendship with more than two civilizations this building yields +4 Production :c5production: and +2 Happiness :c5happy:.

Ken, when splitting civs, you have to make sure you're actually splitting the civ, not mixing up random uniques... I'm not saying you did that, but those unqiues seem unrelated the way you put them... Ivan III leading Russia with 2 Ancient era unqiues isn't exactly historically correct, and... A tip for you: You should think about the focus of your designs. As in, if the UA promotes friendships, tpso should the other unqiues. If there's a UB granting extra food, players are likely to go for a tall empire with the said design. If the design is about a period of war, its unqiues shouldhave to do with war, etc.

I revised the Split, what do you think now as I followed your advice on making it have a primary focus.

The Old Kingdom of Egypt
:c5capital: Old Kingdom (Djoser)
UA: Servant to The Pharaoh -
Upon the creation of a Pantheon :c5faith: your Capital gains a "Step Pyramid" building which grants +2 Faith :c5faith: and +15% Production :c5production: towards Military Units in this city. For every 10 Citizens :c5citizen: following your Pantheon or Religion, gain +2 Points towards a Great Engineer :c5greatperson:.

UU: Nome Bower -
Replaces the Archer. Unlike the Archer it replaces, it has 3 Moves :c5moves: instead of the normal 2. When this unit is produced in a city where your Religion or Pantheon :c5faith: is dominant, this unit starts with the "Pharaoh's Chosen" promotion granting +20% more Combat Strength :c5strength: than normal.

UB: Mastaba Tomb -
Replaces the Shrine. Upon the killing :c5war: of a Friendly Unit inside friendly borders gain a Faith :c5faith: boost depending on the Era in which they belonged to. Upon the founding of a Religion this building yields +2 Faith :c5faith:, instead of +1 Faith :c5faith:.

"Rome wasn't built in a day..."
Roman Empire (Nero Germanicus)
UA: Advocating the Lesser -
When war has been declared on an Allied City-State :c5citystate: or a civilization you have a Declared Friendship :c5influence: with, gain +25% Production :c5production: bonus towards Military Units for 10 turns. (Cannot be stacked.) Influence :c5influence: for City-States :c5citystate: decreases +15% Slower than normal.

UU: Legionarie -
Replaces the Spearman. When this unit is stationed with City-State :c5citystate: borders, Influence :c5influence: with that City-State increases by +1 each turn. Has +10% Defense :c5strength: from City and Ranged Attacks.

UB: Theatrum -
Replaces the Opera House. When your civilization is not at war, this building provides +2 Happiness :c5happy:, and for each allied City-State :c5citystate: gain +1 Production :c5production: and +1 Culture :c5culture:.

While the idea itself is nice, the UB isn't exactly appropriate for Rome... At least not as an opera house replacement. Its from an entirely different period and it grants bonuses during peace, contrary to the war based UA and UU (speaking of which, city attacks count as ranged, no need to mention that).
