Kerbal Space Program

Mapsat? Nah, but one of the devs said that he's seen something fail when the mod tries to start up, in the logs. He also said that it will have to be recoded slightly before it can work again.

If you mean all the other mods, I like to play it safe and reinstall everything from scratch, when I do a clean install.

Whoa, KSP is coming to steam

This is going to make those of us who use Steam a lot more happy when it comes time for new game versions.. They will be rolled out automatically..

Or it will make us mad, because new versions could make our game saves incompatible. hmm.

Uh oh... Like i already said i hope ksp isnt getting too popular...

It is not that implausible that if they get into the mainstream market and begin to earn some money or if the game is bought by some large company then maybe they begin to transform the game in a more accessible and more sellable product, so it can attract more buyers, making the game simpler or even losing its essence and becoming another mainstream product, instead of increasing complexity and interest to get something really original and unique like they apparently are trying until now. Or it is only me being paranoid, dont know.

I dunno, I kinda trust these guys to stick to their vision and core philosophy. What you are describing would be a big middle finger to the community that's supported them for so long and made this thing possible in the first place.

Then again, money does easily corrupt..

No need to worry, the developers share your view on this.

I don't really like it anymore, though.

I feel the same way.

I liked it better before they added xp, and magic, and all the weird stuff like that. I just wanna build.

I think some people are in for a 'surprise' then, because KSP is going to not be a sandbox game forever, where you can do whatever you want, although I hope they keep that mode in the final game. Unless I'm totally wrong about this, the main focus of the game is going to be the career mode, where you have money to spend, where explosions an deaths matter, etc.

It's a 100% sandbox game right now because that helps with development and testing, and I never got into minecraft, but I have a feeling that it was much of the same

KSP made it to Steam the other day.

Career mode does have the potential to go against the "charm" of the game as I see it.

One of the cool things about KSP is that it doesn't tell you what you should do. It doesn't give you a baked-in win condition. The point of the game as I see it is to give yourself a cool goal and then try to make it reality.
While operating under economic restraints is a welcome addition and give more meaning to cost-efficient designs and safety concerns the whole career thing might prevent the player from setting his or her own goals.

As for Minecraft I don't believe in NovaSilisko's assessment. There was basically one big "design-policy" shift that happened around the time Notch left the reins to Jeb. The real problem was that Notch's original vision for the game was somewhat half-baked. He wanted it to be way more focused on survival and exploration, but the game didn't really have the content to keep that playstyle fresh for long. Meanwhile the playerbase had become for more involved in the building part of the game treating the exploration as means towards the building end. Mining gold is a fairly meaningless pursuit in itself, but if you have set yourself up to (legitly) build the Shwedagon Paya it suddenly acquires meaning. Also the whole concept of building an industry and an economy out of the orginal wilderness is very compelling.

This came up on reddit today:

We're going to have a few set systems and the rest will be procedurally generated. We'll probably expose the seed used to generate your galaxy so you can give to a buddy and have the exact same galaxy.

.... so wait, different solar systems? Can you travel between them? As in I have to construct a large ship in orbit capable of near light velocities in order to make the journey?

Yes. Yes. Yes.
We have plans for FTL engines.

:woohoo:

There's also a screenshot of a prototype of the resource system

Resource system...

About FTL engines i see it problematic since if they work like hyperpowerful normal engines and relativity and light speed limit is ignored it still would take huge amounts of time to travel beetwen stars. Maybe it will be implemented through building wornhole portals. Of course they would need huge amounts of resources and energy, maybe all the energy output of kerbol to work, which would mean kerbals have reached type 2 in Kardashev scale and who knows from there they could go further beyond and even reach type 3 or... errr...

Sorry, i got carried away...

There's just something about falling booster stages...
