A continuation from my Duna Express 2 transit ship. Kerban to Duna transfer was successful but I expended about half my fuel getting into a low orbit. The great thing though was that the lander didn't wobble during acceleration and deceleration.
After a tense re-entry, the engines slowed down the Duna Lander 2 and the parachutes did the rest. Congratulations, Jebediah Kermin! You're the first Poodle Corp. employee on Duna!
After a romp around the surface, Jeb fired off the landing rockets and jettisoned them for the ascent phase once their fuel was exhausted. But the rendezvous angle was wrong and Jeb ran out of fuel on the way up! Fortunately he hadn't expended too much RCS fuel and at least got him out of the atmosphere.
Fortunately the mothership thought of this eventuality and moved into an interception orbit to meet the limping module.
A few puffs of the RCS got the module on its way back to the mothership! Thank goodness the module is extremely light
Getting closer...
And closer...
Closer still...
Just dock already!
Contact! Jeb climbs out of the module and returns to the mothership.
Jettisoning the ascent module. We won't need it to get back home. Thank you, Duna Lander 2!
Plotting the course back home.
Fuel is getting a little low, hope that the Duna Express 2 can make it.
At least I'll get pretty close.
A stable orbit has been achieved!
And just in time too! Completely out of fuel! But how will they get back down?
Don't panic! Poodle Corp. is sending up an unmanned crew retrieval module.
Plotting the perfect interception orbit.
All aboard!
Bill is the last to leave, having been on the Duna Express for over a year.
Don't worry, the Duna Express 2 will be refueled and brought back into a low earth orbit! Nothing is wasted (too much).
Preparing for re-entry.
You can see the service module spinning off in the front window.
Re-entering the atmosphere.
Chutes deployed!
Chutes open!
And that brings to a close the epic adventure of Jebediah Kermin; the first Kerbin to set foot on Duna and come back alive!
