Kerbal Space Program

Because they're not installed per se. It reads the files every time, and it can't find them if they're not named specifically. What's installed is KSP.app or .exe

i've already alternated between stock KMP and my personal list of mods twice without issue on the same copy of the game in the same folder hierarchy

Act your age, dammit! :p

Rename your SP files to SP standards, then create new ones with the stock name. Copy+Paste Squad Gamedata folder from your own Gamedata into the new one. Put KMP Gamedata in there as well. Now you have KMP compatible Gamedata. Rename your saves folder and move in KMP's (included in the DL I think). When you want to play with mods again, switch the names.

That new method I invented for flying to other planets might be efficient for Duna and Eve so far, but for Moho and Dres, forget about it.. I couldn't even get a Moho intercept.. For Dres I ended up using probably at least 1,000 m/s more thrust than optimal and then needed a whole crapload of fuel to slow down.

Here's Bob figuring out that this is probably a one way mission

Indeed, I used up all my fuel to try to land and.. no mo' fuel and still a while to go. Goodbye Bob *salute*

But wait, the probe has a small amount of RCS fuel

I ran out of that too, smashed into the ground at 65 m/s, things exploded, a large chunk of the probe went flying, flipped around a bunch of times, eventually landing almost right up, but then ended up like this

The only way to do science was to beam it right through Dres. Bob might have been dead, but the probe lived on.

And that's how I finished unlocking the tech tree

About how many missions did you need to unlock all?

About how many missions did you need to unlock all?

I'm not sure, but let's see.. There were a couple initial orbit or trying to get into orbit missions, then the Mun twice, Minmus, Eve, Gilly flyby, Duna, and Laythe. Then I figured out that I could get science from EVA missions, so I went back to the Mun and Duna and did a Moho flyby. Then I attached a far more extensive science probe meant for planets and moons with atmospheres to the top of my lander (as seen above) and went back to Eve and then back again to the Mun and Minmus. Then that payload with all possible science things above went to Dres.

Each one of the above mentioned planets or moons was usually 1 mission each, so whatever all that adds up to. Error margin of 5 missions with a 75% probability quotient and remember that my first bunch of missions weren't very efficient - I was just observing the goo and that's it, because I'm a dumbass.

I think what the game sort of needs now is an accomplishment checklist. Flyby of Mun - check, high orbit around Mun - check, landing on mun - check, landed and returned from the Mun, biome checklist, etc, with each checklist item having a bunch of potential missions, such as "space tourist wants to fly to Duna" or whatever. You pick your missions, use money to build your spaceship, send it off to places to try to accomplish missions, get rated on each mission in terms of how many objectives were completed, and in the process slowly unlock the tech tree and make money and gain prestige. Or you can just go after checklist items without doing specific missions - but then won't make money unless you slap advertising on your ships and do things that have never been done before - leading to advertising dollars. Your last mission then should be to assemble a giant ship in orbit to leave the solar system and arrive in another one, to set up base, because a giant meteor is heading towards Kerbin and is going to end civilization as Bob knows it.

So that last bit is probably only ever going to happen as a mod or whatever, but that sort of engaging gameplay would really do it for me. Then in sandbox mode you could do all the "screwing around" stuff, like we do now.

I played for the first time in a few months, and decided it was time to attempt a mission to one of the other planets. Decided to try for Eve with an unmanned probe. Managed to get pretty close, but in the end, was a bit short of where I needed to be when I ran out of xenon gas. I'll have to try again with more xenon and a better trajectory into the planets gravitational field.

But just being able to spot a new planet was exciting enough for me.

The Real Solar System mod seems incredibly awesome for anyone looking for a serious challenge (FAR is basically mandatory)

Second attempt to put a satellite into orbit around Eve.

Spoiler :

Modified the design somewhat, as the initial design did not have enough solar panels to properly power the engine. Things went much more successfully at first. Managed to get a close approach on Eve.

However I discovered that the xenon engine was not powerful enough to properly put the satellite in orbit, and the satellite began to be sucked in by Eve's gravity apparently. By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late to save it, and had to accept its fate.

Voyagkerb 2 eventually crashed down into Eve's purple ocean. Will need to launch a third mission.

But on the plus side, while I didn't manage to successfully put something into orbit, I did manage to successfully crash something into the planet. Which, in its own way, is a success.

I find the ion engines are pretty much useless...

They are OK if you are going to Jool or Eeloo and have the time to wait.

They aren't really useless. I really WANT to love them. But... It is just tedious that you can't accelerate past level 4 while using them...

...and its bad enough if you have 15 min burns with nuclear engines, so only few are willing to suffer through a 60-120 min burn with Ions. I am not one of those. Q_Q

They really are useless. 10-15 minute burn with 4x on. I'd have to install MJ to keep me on target to make them viable.

The other day I tried to get a probe into a low orbit around the sun, and my last stage used an ion engine. I tried to make it work, until I calculated it would require a 12-hour burn (in ~30 minute bursts around periapsis) to get into a circular orbit. So instead I put it into a suborbital trajectory and crashed it into the sun. Incidentally, spacecraft blow up at 1312 m above the surface.

Voyagkerb 3, built using nuclear engines for the actual space travel instead of ion engines, successfully achieved a 110km orbit around Eve. Turns out that I brought way too much fuel on this voyage. The second last stage did all the interplanetary travel, and even then was only half empty, while this last stage it is currently on still has all of its fuel. I had enough fuel that I probably could have returned it to Kerbin without a problem.

Next step I think will be an unmanned rover.

I completely concur. I would use them for probes or maybe even manned rockets if I could trust the SAS to keep them on course. It's extraordinarily frustrating that they will drift off target which requires constant attention over those super-long (even on 4x) burns. I don't like the massive power requirements for them either but I can get over that given the fact that providing adequate power to electric propulsion systems is a major problem IRL.

Congrats dude! It's always awesome when you wind up with waaay more fuel than you need; certainly it's better than the alternative.

_______

I really hope to be able to finish up my Laythe base over winter break but I have a lot of fabriction work for the satellite team lined up for me. :\

Question : What would cause a mission to blow up in space. I had a two-Kerbal mission that ran out of fuel. The orbit was losing about 30-50m at each perigee. I wanted see how long it would take for it to decay and attempt to land. They had been up for a few days. I left the game running and when I came back the end of flight summary was on the screen. Every event said it crashed on the launch pad. But the screen showed space with an altitude of about 300000m. So I think it blew up in space. I had a simultaneous mission that I forgot about. When I checked on that it instantly blew up in space and the termination summary came up. Same thing about crashing on the launch pad. I know the orbits were close, but did not intercept. I'm wondering it the first mission orbit path decayed to the point that the two missions intercepted. Or did battery die and the mission terminate? I have several satellites in orbit, and they are all still functioning. Any idea what happened to my two missions?
