"Yes..." Shaka mumbled, as if coming out of a haze. "Zulu culture comes from the Zulu people! Not from enslaved Egyptians or Mali! The Sistine Chapel shall be completed soon! When it is, I shall declare a feast! Raise the banners high! Bring Li Po, and have him compose a poem to commemorate the occasion! Ulundi shall shine!" The warlord turned to his generals. "But first... let us wipe the blight of Mansa Musa off the face of our beautiful continent."
The round began with a few trades to bolster our shaky treasury:
We ended up getting a less welcome boost when our work on the Mausoleum of Mausollos disintegrated into a smattering of gold coins.
I ended up throwing caution to the wind and spurring my weary army onward toward Djenne. They found a beautiful city ripe for the taking:
I didn't want Mansa Musa fortifying further or, worse, vassalizing himself to someone that I'd rather stay on friendly terms with.
I attached the Great General to the more wounded War Elephant and brought the walls down with my Catapults. It took a few turns, but the Jewish Holy City was mine:
Not a bad little spot. No shrine, though

Attaching the General to a Jumbo wasn't a great long-term move, but it probably shaved 15-20 turns off the time required to take Djenne.
In 670 A.D., we learned just how ahead of real history we were:
Cigarettes!? Camel or Marlboro? Oh, and the restoration of the Theater was well worth the 35 gold.
I don't know who put him up to it, but the normally friendly Genghis Khan decided to be a jerk. Why am I not surprised?
Thankfully, we didn't encounter anything more threatening than a nosy Scout. And a couple of turns later, the Pope declared an end to the war on Mongolia, so I guess we're buddies again.
When Civil Service finished, I got a really good deal on the other half of the Macemen combo:
Haven't built any yet, but we now have the option. Which is nice.
I ended up promoting one of the Impi to a Medic after taking Djenne, so our troops healed up quickly and swooped in on Mansa's Congo city:
I kept it. I shouldn't have, but I did. It can be a reasonable little cottage city in the future.
I continued my trade-happy ways, fetching Feudalism from the Ottomans:
I haven't adopted any of the new Civics yet. I'm still running Organized Religion, Slavery, and the baseline for everything else. I think a revolution is in order soon.
In 775, we got the Booby Prize:
I settled him. It'll be nice to have some Espionage Points to play with, and, besides, he's good for some culture once we have...
That. Now we can start properly pursuing our cultural victory. I've decided to focus on Ulundi, Thebes, and Memphis.
But first, I had one last task to take care of. Djenne was a hotbed of partisan activity. "We refuse to fight our brothers and sisters of the faith" this and "We yearn to rejoin our homeland" that. Blah, blah, blah. There was only one way to skin that particular cat:
Upon being presented with their king's head on a spear, the good people of Djenne calmed down.
I made one last trade before calling the round:
Time to see what Europe looks like.
Turns out old Willem had a little bit more on his map:
Yeah, yeah. Saladin took Minoan. He's welcome to it. More importantly, it seems that the Koreans and Khmer are doing better than I'd anticipated, as are the Romans. Carthage continues to be a thorn in my side. Maybe we should just wipe them out and salt the earth.
Here's a look at our cities:
Yeah, we're a little behind on the Cultural stuff, but as that ALC taught us a while back, it can be done.
Here's a mondo-mega look at the tech screen:
I was kind of thinking we weren't really in the running for the Liberalism race, but, looking at the screen, maybe we have a shot.
And the relations screen:
Boggles the mind, don't it?
So, here's where we stand. I'm trying to spread our religions throughout the empire and get those Temples up, but it's fairly slow going. Militarily, should we make a push to get Carthage off the map, or just send our stack off to the Suez Canal to defend against incursions? Let's stir up some controversy!
The save:
