He gave up the majority of his power and sold off royal business assets to the public. He pretty much nerfed himself down to only having the power to appoint judges and commute sentences. I'm not sure what your specific problem with him is. He ended up with less power than a life long senator in the US and he willingly gave it up instead of holding on to power.
He was still an unelected monarch. Illegitimate authority doesn't become less illegitimate because you could potentially have even more of it.
