Large Map and New Civilizations are now playable

Playing Ethiopia - first UHV is quite easy. Just settle Mareeg with started settler (1NW from fish) so you can grab 3 intense with one city (with culture slider), 5th you can get from Nubia or settle city on hill near Mecca (it will be auto razed then Arabia spawn). Convert to Republic and Manorialism at start.
2UHV - is quit intresting. Coz you'll get from -3 to -6 penalty with Catholic civs. So you need convert to Catholicism or prevent Great Schism. And of coz you need wipe out Nubia ASAP. And you need to be in contact with civs to count pleased relation for UHV
3UHV not sure will be easy. All thos congress and colonial cites behind jungles with access only from sea - will se, how to handle with it

As the Norse how do you get to America now? I have a city in Iceland but can not figure out how to make it to America. I have tried the usual strategy from before where you get 100% culture so you can get the whale and I still can’t get there. I also have compass.

Playing Byzantium, 330 AD start, Epic/Emperor. I struggle with the cash goal, 7500 gold. Tried sending GM to China/Korea as usually and most I can get is 1350 gold, even from cities 16+. 1050 gold from both holy cities there. I remember from before 1-2 GMs were enough for this goal?
Maybe with zero research after Nobility, keeping only the 4 core cities, lucky with wonders I could save that...
Though it was fun to see strong Persia resisting the Arabs while I was wandering there :)

I agree Byzantium seems very difficult now, I play on Monarch/Normal and the 600AD start. Need 5000 gold but Great Merchants give 700-900 each. I've only been able to generate 3 but maybe a 4th is possible.

I have the suspicion that the GM gold is out of wack on the longer game modes right now.

You get twice the gold in a Holy City.

I got there by settling greenland and having compass researched to allow cape movement. That will get you access to newfoundland. It takes much longer than before, so you gotta settle iceland quickly. The Celts also can do it too without much issue cause Iceland is in their historic area Iirc.

Step 1: Reyjavik. Step 2: BIG REYJAVIK CULTURE. That should give access to eastern Greenland. STEP 3: settle the tile on Greenland's southern tip directly above the ice floe and you gain access to the Americas.

Yeah it was weird. I used to send Great Merchants to China but they only give 800ish in the big Chinese holy cities.

In contrast, in a run I did with the civics overhaul patch, I tried instead sending them to Jerusalem/Mekka and they give the old 1400 that I used to see from the Chinese trade missions. I don't know if that's intentional or not.

I play on Normal speed always when going for UHVs.

you can try using great artists for huge culture boost in capital using byzantine UP. it actually does give a huge boost to gold per turn, and can also be leveraged into espionage points that you can send to foreign civs and steal treasury for even more money. i think the harder UHV is actually UHV3 cuz of stability but the gold per turn from UP can really sustain your money problems.

not sure how well this strategy would work on normal/epic since i only play on marathon

also isn't the GM trade mission value tied to the base profit (can see it by hovering the trade route) that you can see in whatever you city with the highest trade commerce is? like for example, as japan, my highest commerce by trade route came from Edo-Kahuripan, which had a higher "base profit" of 2 commerce rather than the usual 1 commerce. sending a GM there gave a much larger gold value than other cities. i dont really know how the base profit is calculated and i'd be really happy if anyone who knew could tell me

I just finished Monarch/Marathon UHV and never used Great Merchant. 100% slider and Spies. Lots of cash stealing Spies. You should be able to buy everything you have missed later.

This works but have you been able to do all this by 1100?

I was able to do it on marathon. I needed a Great Scientist to get to Compass, but make sure you settle Reykjavik ASAP. I played on 600 AD start so your starting cities are already settled and you need to make another Settler to build it. IIRC you need about 400 culture there to cover the ocean tile, which is easily done by using the culture slider and whipping out a Monument.

Does sound there is some RNG involved, suppose a good start is needed to gain plunder in form of cities, and keep the money flowing in so you can keep research up and maybe culture. If Rome collapses and there tons of barbarians, early it is slim picking, usually along the coasts, with barely not villages, farms etc.
