Layoffs :(

But that's a totally different kind of game.
Civ III is a totally different game from what Civ VII has become...
Civ IV already removed mountains crossing, and other drastical changes, that for me, was too much to digest.
Civ III-II is the golden standard.
To other is Civ V... but to me Civ V is a completely Alienation of what Civ really was...

Of course it's a completely different game, but the core philosophy hasn't changed.
The Golden formula hasn't changed.
It's a 2D, isometric, NEW game, that is what it's notable and noteworthy IMHO.

What?

The game that we're talking about is an RTS. It has nothing to do with Civ.

Civ II-III had all units moving 1 tile and then cavalry with 2 tiles and max 3 tiles.

By Civ VI we had Archers moving 4 tiles, Horses 4-5, Cavalry 6, Tanks 8!!
You're right, it's not an RTS... It's just a BLOODY MESS....
Fast Paced Mess, to the point that HUMANKIND, introduced AUTO-COMBAT...

How much You'd be willing to bet that Civ Devs had one or two thought about AUTO-COMBAT?

It doesn't matter if it's RTS or 4X.
It's not the message I wanted to pass through.
The message is crystal clear.

They made a NEW game, with the OLD graphics. NOT a REMASTER.
A new, 2D, game. Stop.

Civ2 had unlimited moves on RR, which was on every tile pretty fast in any game. ;)

Yes, it was quite another time back then.

Civ2 can probably never be topped for game-breaking unit balance. Late game, you had railroads with infinite movement and you had Howitzers which ignored city defense modifiers. You could conquer any city connected with railroads in one turn.

Well, yes, in the vanilla game. Very few posters on the Civ2 sub-forums, especially in the Scenario League, play that anymore. Custom scenarios and mods predominate, and almost every feature of the game (save a few) can be altered, edited, or, at least mitigated, by the very robust editing tools that someone doesn't need to be a programmer to use, especially with the ToTPP meta-tool. A remastering would almost certain annul those editing and modding capabilities.

Except Civ IV-V-VI represented some Massive change.. 1upt, Districts,... both still with us.
so that radical change was there even if it was not necessary.

I would expect Civ8 will have both some civ change mechanism and some Age transitions... however, they will not be the same as Civ7. some of the biggest objections will be looked at and just like 1upt seems to be in its best place with Civ7 and commanders, by Civ 9 only those who object in deep principle to civs changing or transitions will still think it is terrible. (because it will be relatively painless... and any pain it has will be expected)
If they have Civ swapping and age resets again I actually do think the series will end.

I’m fine with LEADER swapping - which is a much more elegant solution

Frankly 90% of the Mods people want to make for a civ game SHOULD be as easy as it was in Civ 2 and 3

I remember the first time I looked at modding for 6 and I was so enfuriated by how unneccessarily complicated they made it I refused to have anything to do with it

And this is the guy who used to make mods, for Halo CE, on the OG xbox, where a goddamn sodering iron was required.

Assuming the franchise survives 7, having 8 double down will finish the job, no question.
